NCHC 2024 STUDENT OF THE YEAR

TWO YEAR INSTITUTION

ASHLEY KOENIGS, DES MOINES AREA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

HOW HAVE YOU CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR HONORS PROGRAM AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO SO?

Written from the perspective of DMACC Honors Director, Nancy Woods

Ashley has greatly contributed to DMACC's Honors Program. As a HS valedictorian
scholar, she has fully immersed herself in our college's student body, academia,
and athletics. In a year of "honors program reconstruction," she has modeled
excellence through her discipline research projects, participation in summer
research programs for undergraduates, presenting research posters at college and
university symposiums, mentoring upcoming honors students, leading the
reinvigorated Student Honors Advisory Board, and presiding over Boone's Phi
Theta Kappa Chapter.

Ashley was one of three students selected to participate in a unique summer
leadership experience sponsored by the Iowa Association of Business and
Industry, "2024 Leadership Iowa University." As an emerging professional, this
intensive leadership training program helped Ashley develop top networking,
organizational, and relational skills. She's putting those acquired skills into
practice at our college and throughout our Honors Program. This unique
professional development opportunity has simultaneously raised the visibility of
DMACC Honors and helped to improve the college experience for students.

In summer 2024, Ashley, a freshman, participated in a 10-week REU at the
University of North Dakota. The research project she produced, "Improving Soil
quality: The Impact of the conservation Reserve Program in Active Carbon
Sequestration," is directly related to her desired degree goals of majoring in
Environmental Science. Upon her return from this REU, Ashley agreed to
facilitate three district-wide REU-Workshops this fall to encourage other
students to apply to such opportunities. All DMACC students will be invited to
attend thereby raising awareness of the Honors Program.

Ashley understands the direct relationship between service leadership and higher
education. In every component of her academic, athletic, and social realms she
exemplifies leadership, scholarship, service, and fellowship. She's inspired
toward this excellence because of a deeply rooted desire to lead by example,
inspire fellow students toward excellence, and assist others in need.

HOW DOES YOUR HONORS EXPERIENCE REFLECT NCHC'S SHARED PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES?

Ashley's honors experiences are a direct reflection of NCHC's Shared Principles
and Practices in numerous ways. To begin with when she graduates, with Honors,
Ashley will have earned the maximum number of "honors credits" that our program
can accommodate (20). She will have achieved more honors credits than others who
cap out at 13 credits. She has fully invested herself for the full two years of
her academic experiences at DMACC.

Secondly, the curricular scope of Ashley's honors experiences has been diverse
and interconnected through a variety of places such as her REU at UND where she
was the youngest undergraduate working in that research project. Here she
received extensive mentoring and graduate school advice from PI's and graduate
student leaders in her field.

Further, Ashley has participated in different modalities of honors studies. She
participates in DMACC honors seminars and those offered at ISU and Drake
universities. She is a member of the "DMACC + ISU = CONNECT" program which
creates bridges between our CC and ISU to connect her with internship
opportunities, career fairs, university clubs, and extensive academic advising.
This fall, Ashley was awarded the Iowa Space Grant Consortium's Community
College Research Scholarship to fully fund the research projects she will be
completing this year. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who
have exemplified research excellence to encourage them to continue a lifetime of
STEM research and investigation. While still a DMACC student, Ashley will
present her research in spring 2025 before a national conference for Space Grant
Consortiums. In addition to these many outstanding practices that Ashley has
demonstrated, she will take the lead in the redevelopment of our college's
Student Honors Advisory Board (SHAB). Together with other members, we have begun
to develop a vision for what we want to accomplish through SHAB and are in the
process of goal setting and strategic planning.

Lastly, Ashley personifies co-curricular involvement in opportunities through
her management of the DMACC Women's Basketball team! This time-intensive
responsibility requires her to attend all WBB practices and games. It also
requires her to do advanced work (i.e., game statistics) so that the players are
informed and prepared. Our WBB team benefits from Ashley's modeling of academic
leadership; we have enjoyed a substantial increase in athletes joining the DMACC
Honors Program this fall in part because of her modeling.

WHAT EXPERIENCES HAVE YOU HAD THAT SET YOU APART FROM OTHER CANDIDATES?

Ashley's modeling of diversity, academics, athleticism, and inclusion
distinguishes her from other candidates. Ashley's honors discipline research
projects have reflected a multi-layer of research, involvement, and resources.
In her first project "Bat Conservation," not only did she perform the required
research for the class, but she found interesting ways to include other students
in the research (and development) process! She set up a table in the student
center and invited passing students to decorate, paint, and stain the dozen "bat
houses" she built. As students were participating, she not only talked with them
about her research project, but she also spoke about the benefits of being in
the DMACC Honors Program. Later Ashley coordinated with the Boone City Parks
Manager and assisted in their installation throughout our city's parks.

After completing the UND REU, Ashley began recruiting other students to
participate in REU's. She's spoken to classes, volunteered to assist with
workshops, and she's making a reflection video of her experiences for future
use. Relating her personal experiences narrative is exceptionally motivational
to other students. We will have a record number of applicants participating in
REU's next summer.

As a "NASA Aerospace Community College Scholar," Ashley participated in their
Spring 2024 NCAS cohort. Her application was selected out of hundreds
nationally. Her cohort collaborated on projects and scenarios posed by NASA
engineers. Her "NASA Final Project" culminated an intensive 5-week online
workshop. Ashley academically stretched herself when she pursued the application
of biology and sustainability in her application to NCAS. She fully completed
Mission-1 and was invited to continue her experiences into Mission-2, but she
wisely declined to better focus on her grades and other responsibilities. Asley
is scheduled to speak to my Classical Physics class next week to talk about her
NCAS experiences and the benefits she received.

This NCHC Civic Seminar explores the Chesapeake Bay’s environmental and social
challenges. Over ten days, students will engage with local stakeholders and
visit key sites to study issues like climate change, coastal resiliency, and the
fate of key species. The seminar helps students develop solutions for complex
civic issues in their own communities.
