whatever format they as Team Perfect Circle desired, so as to commemorate the
winning car.

Kobus Jonker, race engineer for Franco, together with his engineering team, did
a proper body-off of chassis project on the Porsche and paint stripping was
meticulously done to get the car fully refurbished and restored to represent the
Porsche with the exact livery of the Team Perfect Circle winning car of David
Piper and Richard Attwood. In the race itself, racing their Porsche , the dream
unfortunately came to a premature end when, after about three and a half hours,
which, at that stage the race was under a safety car full course yellow, the
Porsche would not accelerate when the track went back to green.

After the pit stop it was determined that the gearbox would not find third gear
and subsequently it was decided by the team to retire the car. The dream
however, is not yet over as plans are already in place for the team to continue
participating in the GT3 Intercontinental GT3 season. But we will definitely

We wish Team Perfect Circle the best of luck with their Endeavour. They are
getting rare but an immaculate model, owned by Derek Nell, was on display. The
bakkie is still in an original condition, but its interior has been restored and
its air cleaner and camshaft have been painted the original colour. The only
resemblance between this bakkie and the Datsun sedan was the model designation.
The sedan was introduced in and became very popular; the range was also
available in a coupé and a bakkie in South Africa. However, a very special
version of the was on display.

A two-door sedan was available in some markets, including the United States of
America, but it was not available in South Africa. Andrew Langham owns one of
the few that were imported to Zimbabwe and made it to South Africa. He modified
it according to the GX specifications, which means that his car has the
twincarburettor engine, the instrument binnacle containing a rev counter and the
threespoke sports steering wheel, to mention a few features.


DIAMOND RESERVES

He also had disc brakes and inch Minilite alloy rims fitted. The rear side
windows were difficult to find; he had two that were intact but when one was
broken, he had to find another one. Fortunately, he came across somebody who had
stripped a similar car for motor racing and fitted the windows from that car. He

He used the spares from a GX sedan which he had bought. Andrew owns other Datsun
models as well, including a GX Coupé and a Y station wagon, another extremely
rare model in South Africa. The Mitsubishi Tredia Turbo was the first
turbocharged car that was available in South Africa, but they are very rare
nowadays. Willem du Plooy has owned one on more than one occasion and has since
bought another one. This car has done km and has proven to be totally reliable.

It is one of about six that are still running, which is strange for a car that
was supposed to be aimed at the mass market. Although it has shown obvious signs
of wear and tear, its engine is still original and has done km.

Bill uses this vehicle for work and has no intention of selling it. It was a
more refined alternative to the original Hilux.

This meant that the original. However, the car he displayed, was a Mazda RX8,
fitted with the six-speed gearbox. The car is completely original and has only
done 99 km. He bought the RX 8 from the first owner six years ago. A few
motorcycles were also on display, including three classic models owned by Meyer
Erlank. It was available in colours like blue, orange and green, but Meyer
reverted to the original black colour.

The only item he could not restore and had to replace, was the exhaust system.
The Yamaha RD was a two-cylinder two-stroke model and built the model he
displayed from three different motorcycles. As a result, the frame and engine
numbers do not match. The third classic motorcycle Meyer displayed, was another
two-stroke Yamaha, the legendary RD , which was developed for Grand Prix
motorcycle racing. There was a very small difference between the RD and the RZ
that preceded it; the changes were mainly cosmetic.

The RD came with a silver frame, but Meyer had his painted black. The first
event for will be the American day on the 8th of March. The ubiquitous
Volkswagen Beetle was the most common vehicle on display, but two very special

models, known as the Ultima Edicion, were fitted with the 1,6 litre engine with
fuel injection, the same engine management system as the Golf 1 and a catalytic
converter.

The cars almost did not make the exhibition because they were held up at the
harbour for three weeks. Three were on display, one of them owned by Carl
Theron, one by his son and the third, which has been changed a little bit, by
Charles Leach. Charles is a bird watcher and he has had new door panels, which
can take a pair of binoculars, a specially adapted canopy and wooden rails.

To him, user-friendliness is more important than originality, although only
minor changes have been made.
