About
Bio/Description

Alejandro Schugurensky is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology and Social Policy at
Princeton University’s Department of Sociology and is affiliated with the Office
of Population Research. He received his B.A. in Sociology (with Honors) from the
University of Southern California in 2018, graduating summa cum laude. Alejandro
was awarded a Fulbright Research Award(Link is external) in 2018-2019 to study
the impact of social policies on access to higher education in Brazil. His
dissertation work has been recognized with the Prize Fellowship in the Social
Sciences(Link is external), the President’s Fellowship(Link is external), and
the Dean’s Completion Fellowship(Link is external).

Alejandro uses quantitative methods to explore social stratification within
educational settings. His research agenda explores the complex relationships
between school choice, educational inequality, and institutional legitimacy.
Using statistical analyses, survey experiments, and machine learning, he
investigates how school admissions policies and allocation processes influence
perceptions of fairness and the distribution of educational opportunities. His
work has been presented regularly at the American Sociological Association
Annual Meeting and the Population Association of America Annual Meeting.

In addition to his research, Alejandro is a dedicated educator, having received
the Graduate School Teaching Award(Link is external) and the Marvin Bressler
Graduate Student Teaching Award(Link is external) from Princeton University.
