Keeping you on the pulse

Thank you for entrusting Alfa Laval with servicing your plate heat exchangers.
Other companies that repair, recondition or rebuild heat exchangers may have no
problem of simply providing you with a task checklist when servicing your
equipment. We, at Alfa Laval, don’t think checking a box is good enough. That’s
why our reports include photos, videos and other key information about your
project - keeping you on the pulse of your equipment.

If you have any questions while your equipment is with us, please don't hesitate
to contact your service advisor.

Equipment check-in

When your equipment arrives at the service center, our experienced service
technicians check the units into our system and start a Pulse report.

We received (114) M15-B, Titanium, 0.5mm thick plates with EPDM glued gaskets.

Serial Number: 30105-64277

Disassembly and inspection

We always start with a manual inspection to check for significant damage and
emerging problems. This helps the technicians decide the course of action and to
avoid unnecessary procedures.

Plates and gaskets

Visual inspection of the plates for any signs of damage, including: corrosion,
erosion, mechanical, rolled edges, deformation and the level of fouling.

GASKET CONDITION: Worn

PLATE CONDITION: Plate pack has failed due to deformation and plate damage.

We have removed 15% (17 plates) of the plates from the batch received and
measured the gasket groove deformation in 4 critical areas. Based on our
measurements, our deformation calculation tool has determined that these plates
should be taken out of service. The gasket grooves are deformed beyond the
tolerances for the M15-B

Gasket removal

The next step is to remove the gaskets in a liquid nitrogen bath. This method
offers a gentle and effective way of removing both gaskets and glue residues.
The liquid nitrogen makes the gaskets brittle so that they can be removed safely
without damaging the plate. All residues need to be removed entirely to get a
completely sealed unit after re-assembly.

Chemical cleaning

Plates are immersed in a caustic and acid bath. Years of experience have
perfected the process down to the smallest detail of what chemicals to use in
which concentration and temperature and for how long. All to ensure removal of
deposits without damaging the plates.

Plate inspection

Following chemical cleaning, the plates are inspected carefully for any
deformations.

Dye penetrant testing finds any small holes or cracks in the plates not visible
by the human eye.

New gasket assembly

After completion of cleaning and inspection stages, re-assembly begins. We only
use genuine Alfa Laval gaskets according to the unit’s design specifications.
This guarantees gaskets with correct shape, composition, hardness and
dimensional tolerances which is important to fit the plate grooves and ensure a
perfect sealing of the plate pack. Gaskets in units that are frequently opened
for mechanical cleaning, are fixed with an extremely strong, two-component glue.

Pressure / hydro-testing

Every heat exchanger is pressure tested with water before it leaves the service
center to ensure it is leak free.
