AFPA WELCOMES CANBERRA LIBERALS POLICING PLATFORM

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) welcomes the commitment to
policing and criminal justice reform made by the Canberra Liberals in the
lead-up to the 2024 ACT election.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said that the proposal of an extra two hundred
police offices, a new police station in the Molonglo Valley and legislative
reform around bail would be welcomed by all ACT Policing and AFP members as well
as the Canberra community.

“The Canberra Liberals have put together an excellent law and order package that
the Canberra community should welcome. Two hundred additional police officers is
a great start and would allow ACT Policing to plug a lot of holes in the
workforce that have arisen due to low numbers of officers.

AFP PROTECTED INDUSTRIAL ACTION TO CONTINUE

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) welcomes the response from its
members after the second round of protected industrial action (PIA) balloting
closed on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

The AFPA has officially been informed that 73.95 per cent of eligible members
voted, with 96.78 per cent supporting further PIA.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said it was clear that members were still unhappy
with the previous enterprise agreement (EA) proposal put to them by the AFP and
Federal Government, which received a ‘no’ vote of 65 per cent.

ANOTHER GOVERNMENT REFERRAL FOR THE LOWEST BASE PAID POLICE IN AUSTRALIA

The Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) notes recent media coverage
regarding the Federal Government’s request that the Australian Federal Police
(AFP) investigate allegations of corruption made against the Construction,
Forestry, and Maritime Employees Union (CFMEU).

The AFPA welcomes the federal government’s confidence in the AFP and its
hardworking members and supports Minister Tony Burke MP’s statement that the
primary function of any union is to look after its members’ interests.

AFPA President Alex Caruana said that while allegations of corruption such as
those made against the CFMEU should indeed be referred to the AFP for
investigation, it was ironic that more pressure and reliance was being placed on
an agency that was chronically underpaid and under-resourced.
