The Bonn Climate Change Conference serves as an intersessional event to prepare
for the next United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Strengthening Aquatic Blue Foods’ Role in National Food Systems to Meet Climate
and Nutritional Targets: The ‘Why’ and the ‘How To’

The UAE presidency has made a welcome commitment to addressing the food-climate
nexus during their presidency at COP 28. Aquatic foods, a critical part of the
food system, need to be included in this dialogue. They serve as an essential
source of protein and micronutrients for many individuals, and are crucial for
establishing resilient, equitable, and nature-positive food systems, especially
in climate-vulnerable communities.

This event, co-hosted by the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions, Aquatic Blue
Food Coalition, and Environmental Defense Fund (link is external), aimed to
provide participants at the Bonn Climate Change Conference with information on
the role that blue foods can and should play in achieving global climate
commitments while ensuring equitable food security. This event provided Bonn
delegations and participants the latest information about the role blue foods
can play in achieving global climate commitments while nourishing the world’s
people. Scientists, implementers and expert on-the-ground actors highlighted how
blue foods can simultaneously meet food security needs and meet commitments in
national climate strategies, such as Nationally Determined Contributions and
National Adaptation Plans. Diverse voices shared insights on proven ways to
advance the climate agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
