That’s because of the fascinating system that Monolith built to make the world
of Middle-earth feel more alive. Every Uruk character in Shadow of Mordor has
its own name and distinct look (you’ll come across regular Orcs as well, but
they don’t rise in rank). If you go into a battle and a grunt kills you, that
weak soldier will move up the ranks to captain. This makes him tougher to kill
the next time you face him. This system is completely dynamic and it works. It
creates emergent moments and storylines that will belong to you and only you,
and it is just such a smart way to make a big, triple-A open-world game feel
more alive. Mordor feels like a real place to me because it has a memory.

It knows what I’ve done, and it throws the results of my success and failures
back at me. Uruks who continually best you in combat continue leveling up and
getting perks. That means certain enemies become impervious to ranged attacks.
But they all also have at least one weakness. Of course, Shadow or
Mordor doesn’t tell just tell you that info. You can do this by interrogating
Uruks for information. You can find the identity, whereabouts, and more about
the characters in Sauron’s army through this method. This loop, of finding and
fighting captains as well as the higher-ranked warlords, is the core of Shadow
of Mordor. It’s the most exciting feature and it does a lot to counter any
issues I have with the game. It gets even better as the game goes along I
honestly love this, and I think gamers should experience it if only because it
is such an interesting new idea from a major publisher. Once you get the hang of
the enemy system, you start to get the feeling that maybe things could get
repetitive. But as the game progresses, as your hero gains more powers, your
interactions with enemies completely changes.įor example, you eventually get the
power to “brand” enemies. You can take over an entire camp before going to face
off against one of the tougher captains. This completely changes the balance of
every engagement. What’s even better than overtaking an entire garrison of enemy
soldiers is that you can brand the captains once you defeat them. If they are a
warlord’s bodyguard, they’ll make what is typically a very tough fight feel like
a brilliant plan all coming together and ending with your victory. Open world
that feels large but not too big This arc of builds over the entire game is such
a smart way. An Aragorn-like ranger, Talion also has the power of Sauron’s
Ringwraiths thanks to his body getting mushed up with Celebrimbor, the Elf
prince who forged the Rings of Power from The Lord of the Rings books. I bring
all of this up only to point out that while you ostensibly play as a human man,
you actually have what amounts to superpowers. You can teleport to surprise
attack enemies. On top of your movement, the map fits in that just-right zone in
terms of size. Things look like they’re far away, but you’ll get to them in no
time. Shadow of Mordor manages to simultaneously feel lived in and large while
never making you feel like getting around is wasting your time. In my time with
Shadow of Mordor, I came across a particular Uruk that turned into what I can
only describe as my mortal enemy. In our first battle, Tumug the Lookout killed
my mount. It was an epic battle that included maybe a dozen soldiers and three
captains. One of Tumug’s comrades dealt the finishing blow on my character.

GPS4CAM LIG

That one is $650 and for most uses it’s probably overkill. We also have several
garmins but they are heavier and bulkier with shorter battery life due to the
display. It will run for days on its built-in battery. I used it with ArcPad on
a laptop to do vegetation mapping before tablets existed. It has no display and
just two modes: logging and Bluetooth. This process will work with any GPS
logger and camera but all the software I use is Windows-based and I’m not sure
if there is something similar that will run on an iPod.Īnother GPS that has
lasted through 15 years of getting carted around the desert is the BT-747
logger. I wrote a paper about the process that you can read here. Sadly, it died
when the GPS week numbers rolled over and the company never had an update for
the device. I used it with my DSLR to geotag photos once I got back to the
office. It would run for about 36 hours on a single AA battery. It had a display
that could show a clock or the current coordinates. My favorite was the Holux
M-241 which looked like a roll of Kodak film. I have used a series of GPS
loggers over the years. They will weigh more than an iPod, but still light
weight for taking backpacking. Most of these cameras have a very nice macro mode
too. If you are using wifi to connect your iPod to upload pictures to
iNaturalist, most of these newer cameras will let you connect to a phone or
whatever using bluetooth or wifi, so you can transfer pictures to your device,
then upload them to the internet. I find the pictures from these little cameras
to generally be better than my iPhone 8 pictures. The new ones are under $500 to
buy, and you have the added benefit of being able to buy extra batteries for
them. There are several other good brands of waterproof pocket cameras with gps
available too. Older models of these cameras can sometimes be found used from
reputable dealers, or you can try buying refurbished ones that come with a short
warranty. I’ve used a Nikon waterproof camera and an Olympus Tough waterproof
camera, both with gps that you can turn on.

I know it’s not exactly what you are asking, but I have used two different types
of small pocket cameras that had gps in them. Sorry I don’t have a better
answer, but I think the key to making things easier for you is to find a piece
of equipment or equipment+software combo that will write coordinates into your
photos somehow. I eventually found this too tedious (AKA I’m just too lazy) so I
bought a GP-E2 for my Canon camera, which attaches to my non-GPS enabled DSLR
and automatically writes in the coordinates to each photo.

I’m not sure if there would be some workaround or otherwise. I forget the next
step (I think it involved photographing the QR code then opening the files in a
program on the computer) but basically what it would do is it would sync the
time of your route with the times of the photos taken, and write the GPS
coordinates of where you were when that photo was taken into the image file.
Basically, you would start the app when you start taking photos, and it would
record your track until you stopped it. There may be some equivalent but back in
the day I used to use an app called gps4cam. In order to automatically have
coordinates when you upload an observation you would need the coordinates to be
written into the image files. That’s a toughie, I think that even if you were to
find a GPS unit you would still be forced to manually enter in GPS coordinates
of observations.
