I had always hated math. Some of my most distinct memories from middle school
are sitting at my dining room table with my mom late into the night, working on
algebra homework. The never-ending confusion caused me to hate the subject of
math altogether. But hand-in-hand with those visceral memories are ones of my
mom coaxing me along my own learning path - giving me the time and patience to
learn my own way. In sophomore year, I began my geometry course. I fell in love.
Over the span of the semester, I tangibly visualized math. I learned how to
apply an abstract concept to real life situations. I've always thought
practically, so having such a concept all of a sudden come to life for me was
paramount. Now, the dining room table was reserved for meals and art projects,
instead of variable and parabola handouts.

After this discovery in my education, I realized the importance of
visualizations to learning. Data and mathematics are such abstract concepts, so
for me to even have an interest in them, they must be simplified and
materialized. Since this newfound appreciation for geometry, I've developed an
interest in not only math, but also learning in general. There is something so
special about finding an outlet in which you really love to learn. And while
experiencing that realization moment is gratifying on its own, there is
something immensely more special about helping others reach that moment.
Teaching in new ways, standing in someone else's shoes, letting empathy lead
your education - that's what it's all about.

Seeing abstract topics through a personalized lens made all the difference in my
understanding of math. In changing my perspective, I developed a passion for
education. This passion has since developed into a deep appreciation for empathy
as a guidepost to decision making in my life. Even though my history with math
is mostly in the past, the value of empathy cultivated at my dining room table
is instilled deep within my design and life processes. Now, I aim to both
educate and inspire with my designs.

keep it simple.
