You should plan a visit to the South Lancaster Wharf if you're looking for a pop of colour to brighten things up. There were other upgrades to the wharf at that time including the addition of a floating dock with kayak launch and picnic tables. This scenic wharf is only five minutes from the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area where you can hike a boardwalk trail and about 20 minutes away from the city of Cornwall which has a bunch of restaurants, trails and activities. It's a great spot to catch the sunrise if you're a morning person. You should bring bug spray as, depending on the season, there may be a number of flies and mosquitos near the water. There are a ton of Ontario apple orchards where you can pick fresh fruit but this one near Ottawa has cozy fire pits and sweet churros. Log Cabin Orchard opens on August 27 and you'll be able to go apple picking through the month of September. Both admission and parking are free. > See on Instagram You can stroll through 33 acres of apple trees as you search for the sweetest ones and then grab some tasty treats. There are also pre-picked apples for sale. On weekends you can treat yourself to giant churros, candy apples and hot apple cider. You can enjoy these sweet eats by a toasty bonfire. You'll find a bunch of different apple varieties throughout the season including Paula Red (one of the first to be ready to pick), McIntosh, Lobo, Honeycrisp and Liberty apples, among others. The orchard is named for the historic log cabin sitting on the property that was the homestead of an Irish immigrant that settled in the 1840s. Now the building is a quaint farm shop selling decor and apple treats. Entrance is free and they accept cash only for bags of apples, food and drinks. Luskville Falls Trail in Gatineau Park is a stunning loop of lush trees and rocky terrain. One lookout point features a panoramic view of the Ottawa Valley, full of lush trees that will be full of colour come fall. The second lookout shows you vast plains and farmland. The hiking trail also features an old fire tower but it is closed to the public (so you can admire it from afar). ANDREWS, SCOTLAND If you have a wanderlust for the majestic cathedrals and historic castle ruins found across the United Kingdom you should make sure to visit these historic stone ruins near Ottawa. St. Raphael's Ruins will take you back in time and trick you into thinking that you're exploring St. Andrews Cathedral in Scotland. It's free to visit and donations are appreciated to help maintain and restore the old church. > See on Instagram This grand church was built in the early 1800s as one of the first Roman Catholic churches in English-speaking Canada, according to its Facebook page. It was the largest parish of its kind at that time and today is considered the founding church for the Anglophone Catholics in Ontario. Due to the vast historic significance this place holds, (as a church and educational centre) it has since been deemed a National Historic Site. The ruins are open for you to wander year-round and during the summer a curator is on-site from Monday to Friday if you have any questions. A fire consumed the building in 1970 leaving the remaining structure of ruins that we can explore today. The church bell was also saved from the fire and is on display within the stone walls. Outside of the stone ruins, there is an old cemetery that keeps the Scottish church vibes going throughout which stands in contrast to the surrounding farmland. If you happen to fall madly in love with the space you can actually rent it for special events including weddings. Keep reading...Show less August 04, 2022 meteor shower THIS NIGHT TOUR NEAR OTTAWA WILL HAVE YOU PADDLING THROUGH A MAZE UNDER A METEOR SHOWER Summer stargazing is about to become even more magical because you can watch a meteor shower from a sparkling water maze near Ottawa. The annual Perseids meteor shower will be lighting up the sky next week and you can take a night tour at Éco-Odyssée for a better glimpse of nature's light show. From August 10 to 13 you can paddle through a water labyrinth to get a great view of the stars. > See on Instagram You'll hop onto your boat of choice (canoe, kayak, pedal boat or paddle board) and use an adventure map to follow wooden figures through the marsh maze. You'll float through the darkness and be able to admire a clear night sky full of shooting stars. There are four time slots each evening that you can book to enjoy the starry spectacle, every half hour starting at 9 p.m. The price varies depending on which watercraft you choose to take out through the maze. The cost starts at $50 for two hours if you select a paddle board or single kayak. The nature park recommends booking soon as they expect the meteor shower nights to sell out quickly. Broadway Across Canada recently announced the upcoming broadway shows for the 2022-2023 season and it's full of hits. Some productions that were delayed are also returning so no worries, you didn't miss out on your favourite musical. The lineup begins this month with broadway shows performing until next summer. The show season kicks off with Dear Evan Hansen opening on August 9 and a ticket lottery for the performance opens up on August 5 to give you the chance to gain entrance for $25 per ticket. The Mean Girls musical was one that was postponed due to the pandemic but it's finally coming back to the stage this October to try and make fetch happen. You'll find the tropical destination of Saint-Zotique Beach about two hours from Ottawa. There are blue water views to admire as you relax under a dried palm tree umbrella or pedal boat out from the shore. The beach also has an inflatable waterpark where you can splash around and challenge your friends on 30 different buoyant structures. > See on Instagram You'll think you've flown to a beach resort as you enjoy wooden lounge chairs and tropical umbrellas scattered across the shore. You can fuel yourself with a treat from weekend food trucks or an ice cream hut. A row of bright yellow pedal boats line the water's edge and you can rent a two-person boat for $15 an hour and a four-person one for $25 per hour. The beach also offers kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent. You've probably heard of water polo but what about Stand Up Paddle Polo? There is a floating SUP Polo area blocked off near the waterpark that can be rented for $8 per hour for adults or $20 an hour for a three-person team. Good luck trying to stay balanced. There are large and small charcoal BBQs to rent as well as beach balls, frisbees and life vests, so you don't need to worry about packing too much. Access to this sandy beach is $12 per adult and the beach recommends that you book online in advance. Once capacity is reached no more tickets are sold at the entrance. The waterpark admission is an additional fee of $12 per adult. There are a bunch of events and festivals you can look forward to on the beach as well. There is a moonlit yoga class on August 12 and a regional grill festival on August 20.
