A MORNING AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF FLIGHT

A highlight of my time in Edinburgh was going out to East Fortune Airfield near
North Berwick to spend a morning at the truly superb National Museum Of Flight.

After arriving at the museum, we first visited hangar 4. This hangar houses
G-BOAA, the second British Airways Concorde to enter service, and the Concorde
with the 3rd amount of flying hours (22,768). With just 20 Concorde ever built,
and only 18 surviving, it was incredible to be able to walk around and inside
this beautiful aircraft.

TRIP REPORT: LOGANAIR ECONOMY EDI-SYY

Posted on October 10, 2023 by thehobartaviationfan1

After a great five nights in Edinburgh, it was time to head up to the Outer
Hebrides. This meant flying one of my favourite airlines – Loganair.

Loganair is one of my favourite airlines, not because of the service (although
the service is good) but because of the fact that whenever I’m on a Loganair
plane, I know I’m back in my home country of Scotland.

Loganair previously operated the Saab 340 on the Stornoway run (which I flew
many times- a key reason as to why the Saab is one of my favourite aircraft)
however these days there’s about a 50/50 chance between getting an ATR or an
E145 on this flight.

We arrived at the airport nice and early, knowing that Edinburgh airport has
notoriously slow security lines. However, it ended up being check in and bag
drop that took the longest, as there were three Loganair flights departing at
similar times, and only 2 check in desks. Eventually we made it though check in
and security (which went much quicker than expected) and were soon at our gate.

A few hours later, our aircraft arrived.

TRIP REPORT: BRITISH AIRWAYS ECONOMY AND BUSINESS LHR-EDI-LHR

Posted on October 6, 2023 by thehobartaviationfan1

The final flight to conclude my 30 hour travel day was a simple 45 minute hop
from Heathrow up to Edinburgh with British Airways. This flight gave me a good
chance to see what the standard domestic economy product was like with one of
the world’s most famous airlines.

Before we could catch this flight though, we had a long and rather complicated
connection to make at Heathrow. After disembarking our Singapore A380 we made
our way through around a mile of underground corridor before getting to passport
control and bag collect (both relatively easy procedures). Following that we
took around a 2 mile walk to get to the Heathrow express underground station.
After around a 25 minute wait our train arrived to transit us from Terminal 2 to
Terminal 5. After arriving at Terminal 5 and having a quick drink, we checked in
and dropped our bags off, before making our way through five seperate layers of
security before finally making to the departure gates.

TRIP REPORT: SINGAPORE AIRLINES PREMIUM ECONOMY MEL-SIN-LHR-SIN-MEL

Posted on October 1, 2023 by thehobartaviationfan1

Of the many options my family considered on how to get to the UK for our big
September 2023 trip, the one we ultimately decided on was Singapore Airlines
premium economy. Having never flown Singapore Airlines before, and with their
premium economy frequently winning awards, I was very excited for these flights,
and it’s safe to say they lived up to expectations.

Flight 1: Melbourne-Singapore, A380

The first flight would take us from Melbourne to Singapore onboard 9V-SKR, one
of Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 super jumbos. After arriving at the airport
nice and early, we made use of the dedicated premium economy check in lane and
were soon into the departures hall. A few hours later, and it was time for
boarding. We made our way onto the plane and into our premium economy seats.

The premium economy seat is fantastic, with all the features you could possibly
require. On each seat, a pillow, blanket, business class noise cancelling
headphones and a drink bottle were provided. The seat had great legroom, usb and
charging ports, phone storage cabinets, a coat hanger, a large adjustable
headrest, and best of all, calf and footrests. The in flight entertainment
system could either be controlled with touchscreen, or with the remote on the
side of the seat. The seat also had great recline.

TRIP REPORT: VIRGIN AUSTRALIA ECONOMY HBA-MEL

Posted on September 28, 2023 by thehobartaviationfan1

To kick off my big Europe trip, my family and I would be taking a simple one
hour hop up to Melbourne on Virgin Australia’s standard 737 economy product. I
was actually quite looking forward to this flight, as I hadn’t flown Virgin in
around 10 years, and was keen to see what their Post-Covid domestic service was
like.

We arrived at the airport nice and early, around two hours before our flight,
and made it through check-in, bag-drop and security within five minutes
(definitely a record for me at HBA!) We found some seats at our gate, and
relaxed.

A few hours later, our aircraft pulled up at gate 3. VH-YQO would be our ride up
to Melbourne; a 10 year old Boeing 737-800, which had been flying for Virgin
most of its life, save for a quick spell in 2020/21 when it was registered to
Dutch company AerCap.

Shortly after, boarding was called and we made our way across the apron and into
our seats in row 17.

HBA SPOTTING: JULY-AUGUST 2023

It’s been an interesting two months at Hobart Airport with some special visitors
and a new airline beginning operations.

My first trip out to the airport was to see a special visitor in the form of a
RAAF Airbus KC-30 down for the transportation of personnel.

MY FLIGHT TRAINING JOURNEY – 6 MONTHS IN

Posted on July 14, 2023 by thehobartaviationfan1

With it being six months since my first flying lesson, I thought it would a good
time to do some reflection on my flight training journey with Par Avion so far.

LESSON 1 – ‘LEARN TO FLY’ TASTER LESSON

My first lesson was a basic 40 minute taster to start getting familiar with the
cockpit and controls of a Cessna 172. Despite this, I still was able to control
the plane a bit and have a go at taxiing, and by the end of the lesson I was
getting somewhat familiar with the primary and secondary controls of a C172 and
their effects. This included the rudder, elevator and aileron.

HBA SPOTTING: MAY-JUNE 2023

It’s been a fairly quiet two months at Hobart Airport, I’ve only made it to the
airport once, but managed to snap a few interesting aircraft on that trip.

My one trip to the airport was to capture the Sunday early afternoon rush hour.
It was probably the busiest I’ve ever seen the airport, with nearly 20 movements
in the space of two hours.

The highlights from the spotting session included seeing one of Jetstar’s new
A321neos, an Air New Zealand A320neo, and a RFDS Beechcraft. The best movement
though, was finally seeing Jetstar’s famous A320 VH-VGF “Jaffa Jet”.

HBA SPOTTING: MARCH-APRIL 2023

The last two months at HBA started slowly, but picked up towards the end with
some interesting visitors.

My first trip out to the airport was to see a Toll-liveried Fairchild
Metroliner. This aircraft is usually based in Queensland, however it spent some
time based down here operating Sharp Airlines freight services. I also happened
to see the airport extremely busy, with nine aircraft parked up!

HBA SPOTTING: JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2023

It has been an interesting two months at Hobart Airport as 2023 gets underway,
and my camera has gotten a good workout!

My first spotting trip of 2023 was to finally photograph VH-OFP, one of
Jetstar’s new A321neos, as well as a Southern Airlines Beechcraft 1900 and a
RFDS Beechcraft King Air, still wearing the old RFDS livery.
