OIL!

Oil! is a novel by Upton Sinclair published in 1927 told as a third person
narrative, with only the opening pages written in the second person. The book
was written in the context of the Harding administration's Teapot Dome Scandal
and takes place in Southern California. It is a social and political satire
skewering the human foibles of all its characters.

The main character is James Arnold Ross Jr., nicknamed Bunny, son of an oil
tycoon. Bunny's sympathetic feelings toward oilfield workers and socialists
provoke arguments with his father throughout the story.

The novel served as a loose inspiration for the 2007 film There Will Be Blood.


CHARACTERS

James Arnold Ross (aka Dad): is a self-made oil millionaire. James Arnold
"Bunny" Ross, Jr.: the protagonist, is the only son of a self-made oil
millionaire. Paul Watkins: a farmer's son who runs away from home, is tutored by
a free thinker, and becomes an advocate for the rights of laborers. After
spending time in Siberia after World War I, he sympathizes with Bolshevism and
becomes a Communist.

OIL



An oil is any neutral, nonpolar chemical substance that is a viscous liquid at
ambient temperatures and is both hydrophobic (immiscible with water, literally
"water fearing") and lipophilic (miscible with other oils, literally "fat
loving"). Oils have a high carbon and hydrogen content and are usually flammable
and slippery.

The general definition of oil includes classes of chemical compounds that may be
otherwise unrelated in structure, properties, and uses. Oils may be animal,
vegetable, or petrochemical in origin, and may be volatile or non-volatile. They
are used for food, fuel, lubrication, and the manufacture of paints, plastics,
and other materials. Specially prepared oils are used in some religious
ceremonies as purifying agents.


ETYMOLOGY

First attested in English 1176, the word oil comes from Old French oile, from
Latin oleum, which in turn comes from the Greek ἔλαιον (elaion), "olive oil,
oil" and that from ἐλαία (elaia), "olive tree", "olive fruit". The earliest
attested forms of the word are the Mycenaean Greek 𐀁𐀨𐀺, e-ra-wo and 𐀁𐁉𐀺,
e-rai-wo, written in the Linear B syllabic script.

OIL (BAND)

Oil is a Christian thrash metal band from Long Beach, California, USA. The band
was formed in 1997 by Ron Rinehart, the former vocalist with Dark Angel, who
converted to Christianity at a Harvest Crusade after Dark Angel's dissolution in
1992. Other members include lead guitarist Blake Nelson (formerly with Deceiver,
Desire and Captain Black) and drummer Jason Vander Pal. Oil has released two
studio albums and one live album.

In 2004, Rinehart left the band to pursue other non-musical interests. The rest
of the group is looking for a new vocalist.


BIOGRAPHY

Oil's first release was a self-financed EP in 1999.

The Refine album was well-reviewed for its honest, no frills metal approach. The
band performed live gigs, including a show at the Stryper Expo, but Rinehart
received an injury soon after the album release which meant Oil did not perform
for nearly a year. Once recovered, Rinehart and Oil returned to performing,
being announced as special guests to Disciple in April.

The band recorded a live album Choice Cuts Off the Chopping Block at the First
Baptist Church in Downey, California, in November 2002. The record included two
new acoustic songs, "This Is My Prayer" and "Medicine Man". When bass guitarist
Matthew Joy opted out in May 2003, Oil recruited Jonathan Thiemens of Blind
Sacrificies as a temporary replacement. This became permanent in July.

 * FRIDAY, WEEK 17: COMPANY - ONE BRUSH CHALLENGE, OIL ON LINEN (08/05/2020)
   
   We finish our one brush challenge week with, I'll shamefully admit it, a
   little bit of cheating. I did use one brush for this painting, a round sable,
   but i also scraped paint with a palette knife. Shame!!!I thought I was
   getting a similar experience from yesterday, and even though they're clearly
   not the same brush (the mongoose feeling a bit scratchy while the sable feels
   a bit mushy, yes, that's a gross over-simplification of how they feel
   thankyouverymuch), I thought I would scrape paint off so that the paintings
   felt a bit different. It's quite amazing how the play between the way in
   which a brush applies paint and the subtracting of paint can open up such a
   world of possibilities. It may seem like an obvious matter to many, but I'm

was taught and who had dictated for myself that paint HAD to be applied thickly,
with visible brushstrokes as a sign of commitment, it's incredibly refreshing to
accept that less paint, less bravura, doesn't equate with a timid approach.
Sometimes we're blind to possibilities because we decided to lock doors that
could challenge our belief system. And while it sometimes takes an immense
amount of courage to open those doors and confront those very things that
constructed our identity, the rewards we can find behind can fill gaps in our

   We finish our one brush challenge week with, I'll shamefully admit it, a
   little bit of cheating. I did use one brush for this painting, a round sable,
   but i also scraped paint with a palette knife. Shame!!!I thought I was
   getting a similar experience from yesterday, and even though they're clearly
   not the same brush (the mongoose feeling a bit scratchy while the sable feels
   a bit mushy, yes, that's a gross over-simplification of how they feel
   thankyouverymuch), I thought I would scrape paint off so that the paintings
   felt a bit different. It's quite amazing how the play between the way in
   which a brush applies paint and the subtracting of paint can open up such a
   world of possibilities. It may seem like an obvious matter to many, but I'm
   usually in awe with the simplest of things - that's the key to a life full of
   wonderment. For someone like me, who was taught and who had dictated for
   myself that paint HAD to be applied thickly, with visible brushstrokes as a
   sign of commitment, it's incredibly refreshing to accept that less paint,
   less bravura, doesn't equate with a timid approach. Sometimes we're blind to
   possibilities because we decided to lock doors that could challenge our
   belief system. And while it sometimes takes an immense amount of courage to
   open those doors and confront those very things that constructed our
   identity, the rewards we can find behind can fill gaps in our lives that we

   I'n my previous video I talked about why ACM (aluminum composite panels or
   Dibond) is the absolute best surface to paint on and showed you how to create
   a custom ground for it. But what if you want to paint on linen? In part 2 of
   this series I'm walking through the full process to prepare linen painting
   panels at home using ACM. If you missed part 1 where I talk about why you

We fin­ish our one brush chal­lenge week with, I'll shame­ful­ly admit it, a
lit­tle bit of cheat­ing. I did use one brush for this paint­ing, a round sable,
but i also scraped paint with a palette knife. Shame!!!I thought I was get­ting
a sim­i­lar ex­pe­ri­ence from yes­ter­day, and even though they're clear­ly not
the same brush (the mon­goose feel­ing a bit scratchy while the sable feels a
bit mushy, yes, that's a gross over-sim­pli­fi­ca­tion of how they feel
thanky­ou­very­much), I thought I would scrape paint off so that the paint­ings
felt a bit dif­fer­ent. It's quite amaz­ing how the play be­tween the way in
which a brush ap­plies paint and the sub­tract­ing of paint can open up such a
world of pos­si­bil­i­ties. It may seem like an ob­vi­ous mat­ter to many, but
I'm usu­al­ly in awe with the sim­plest of things - that's the key to a life
full of won­der­ment. For some­one like me, who was taught and who had
dic­tat­ed for my­self that paint HAD to be ap­plied thick­ly, with vis­i­ble
brush­strokes as a sign of com­mit­ment, it's in­cred­i­bly re­fresh­ing to
ac­cept that less paint, less bravu­ra, doesn't equate with a timid ap­proach.
Some­times we're blind to pos­si­bil­i­ties be­cause we de­cid­ed to lock doors
that could chal­lenge our be­lief sys­tem. And while it some­times takes an
im­mense amount of courage to open those doors and con­front those very things
that con­struct­ed our iden­ti­ty, the re­wards we can find be­hind can fill
gaps in our lives that we thought were unattain­able. If you liked the paint­ing

Di­bond) is the ab­so­lute best sur­face to paint on and showed you how to
cre­ate a cus­tom ground for it. But what if you want to paint on linen? In part
2 of this se­ries I'm walk­ing through the full pro­cess to pre­pare linen

areas that didn't fully ad­here A bray­er or other smooth tool to dis­perse the
glue To prep the ACM: 320 grit sand­pa­per (to dull the enam­el, if your sheet
has that coat­ing) Rub­bing al­co­hol to re­move any oil or residue after

was written in the context of the Harding administration's Teapot Dome Scandal
and takes place in Southern California. It is a social and political satire
skewering the human foibles of all its characters.

The main character is James Arnold Ross Jr., nicknamed Bunny, son of an oil
tycoon. Bunny's sympathetic feelings toward oilfield workers and socialists
provoke arguments with his father throughout the story.

The novel served as a loose inspiration for the 2007 film There Will Be Blood.


CHARACTERS

James Arnold Ross (aka Dad): is a self-made oil millionaire. James Arnold
"Bunny" Ross, Jr.: the protagonist, is the only son of a self-made oil
millionaire. Paul Watkins: a farmer's son who runs away from home, is tutored by
a free thinker, and becomes an advocate for the rights of laborers. After
spending time in Siberia after World War I, he sympathizes with Bolshevism and
becomes a Communist.
