What Dobbs, Bremerton and Bruen Mean for Juvenile Justice
John D. Elliott
The right to a safe abortion went on the block in the United States Supreme
Court last term, and infamously did not fare well. But this denial of a
previously protected right may be only the beginning of the real damage the
Dobbs decision and others potentially hold for young people.  Nor does a new
doctrinal form of decision making introduced by this Court bode well for what
were once firmly established Constitutional principles.

Surveillance Cameras, Facial Recognition Software and False Arrests
Juliet Gee, J.D., M.A.
Law enforcement in jurisdictions all over the country are asking for the right
to access the surveillance cameras of private businesses and individuals, and
making arrests for crimes based on use of surveillance videos from ATMs, retail
stores, and Ring™ doorbell cameras. The use of surveillance technology revives
the age-old debate over whether efforts to thwart crime can ever justify
violating citizens’ constitutionally protected right to privacy.

Congregate Care and Placement Issues in Juvenile Court Proceedings
Judge Leonard Edwards (ret.)
The number of children in out-of-home placements, including group homes,
orphanages, and institutions, has declined dramatically, but social service
agencies and courts continue to place children in congregate care both
immediately after removal from parental care and in the long term.  In this
article, Judge Edwards addresses the responsibilities of juvenile courts to use
their influence and powers to reduce the numbers of children placed in
congregate care and increase the placement in relative care.

Planning, Operating, and Expanding an Alternative School
James Klopovic
The first of a two-part series addresses the three major components of a
program, or project’s, life cycle—planning, operations, and growth.

Children’s Eyewitness Testimony Can Be as Accurate as Adults’ or More So—If
Interviewers Follow These Guidelines
Ben Cotterill
Every year in the U.S. thousands of criminal cases rely on children’s testimony
in order to bring charges. Understanding the wide range of factors that can
affect memory in these young witnesses is of the utmost importance.
