America’s military personnel and their families make incredible sacrifices for
the sake of our nation and should be able to trust that our country will repay
them in kind. Through an employment initiative aimed at assisting veterans and
their spouses by providing both jobs and a community, Starbucks helps to do just
that.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 8 percent of
all sheltered adults experiencing homelessness in the United States—nearly
20,000 people—are veterans. Veterans experiencing sheltered homelessness account
for 11 out of every 10,000 veterans in the country. Though the number of
veterans experiencing sheltered homelessness decreased by 10 percent between
2020 and 2021, homelessness continues to be an issue facing many veterans today.
Learn what you can do to help here.

In 2013, Starbucks promised to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by
2018, saying the initiative was about more than numbers. It was about making a
commitment to those who make sacrifices and dedicate their lives to our country.
They met that goal in March of 2017.

Watch: Behind the uniform, veterans are individuals like anyone else. Through
their commitment to providing jobs for veterans and the family members of active
duty servicemen and women, Starbucks reminds us to ask better questions and
forge better relationships with those with whom we work.

Having met their original goal of hiring 10,000 veterans and military spouses a
year ahead of schedule, Starbucks now aims to increase that number to 25,000 by
2025. Their work is a powerful reminder of what individuals, companies, and we
as a nation can and should do to welcome our soldiers home and show appreciation
for their service and the sacrifices made by their families for the good of us
all.

Next Steps: Either as individuals or organizations, people and businesses should
ask themselves what they’re doing to help veterans in their towns and cities
today. Whether by doing something smaller like volunteering or offering to pay
for a military family’s meals to creating company initiatives aimed at assisting
veterans, we can all contribute.
