On Wednesday, the White House convened the Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and
Health—the first in over 50 years. I was honored to be in attendance
representing Virta Health. You could feel the energy and buzz. I grew up going
to Ohio State football games with my dad, and the excitement of fans in the
Horseshoe was always at a fever pitch. It may sound silly to compare a
healthcare conference to a college football game, but that’s what the room felt
like—there was 50 years of pent-up interest, excitement, and plenty of
frustration, too—all building toward this moment.

And the energy was for good reason. We were there to discuss and begin to solve
two fundamental issues: 1) how do we end hunger and 2) how do we prevent
diet-related diseases?

Diet-related disease: acknowledging the dangerous path we’re on

To say that reversing diet-related disease with nutrition getting top billing at
this conference felt like a big deal is an understatement. For those of us
who’ve been working on this for years, hearing people like Senator Cory Booker
state the problem so plainly in front of a room of people with the power to make
change is a major step: “I want us to be the country that leads the planet...but
we lead industrialized nations in diet-related diseases…And 80% of our
healthcare problems are entirely preventable.”

Others, like keynote speaker José Andrés, talked about how the status quo is far
from good enough, and called for us to “stop throwing money at problems and
start investing in solutions.” He reinforced the gravity of the situation: “food
is a national security priority.”

And Mayor Eric Adams of New York City even shared his own diabetes reversal
story on the main stage: “chronic disease hijacks your life…and it was [caused
by] my dinner, not my DNA.”

We’ve been ignoring the wisdom of “food is thy medicine” for too long. Not
anymore.

Food as medicine: from gimmicky to mainstream

“Food as medicine” is not a new concept. After all, research around the
connection between diet and chronic disease - both its ability to cause it and
to reverse it – has been around for years. At Virta, we’ve published 9 different
peer-reviewed papers on how a personalized nutritional protocol can not only
reverse diabetes, but also lead to better overall health. We’ve been at it for
over seven years. The American Diabetes Association acknowledged and defined
diabetes remission and reversal as a category only last year. And now the White
House Conference. So why are things different now? What’s behind the surge in
attention? And how can it move fully into the mainstream?

On one hand, bipartisan leadership and top-down support from the Biden-Harris
administration is bringing attention, policy changes, and funding to this topic.
Persistent, vocal leaders like Senator Booker, Senator Mike Braun, Congressman
Jim McGovern, Ambassador Susan Rice and the late Congresswoman Jackie Walorski
have created the space and started a dialogue around nutrition-based solutions
to America’s chronic disease epidemic. There’s obvious momentum and excitement
around reversing diet-related disease.

But we’re also at an inflection point in healthcare innovation. Now, we not only
have the evidence that we can reverse disease with nutrition, but we also have
the tools to get these interventions to diverse groups of people at scale. How?
We have three things we didn’t have 5 or 10 years ago, let alone 50: more
evidence and consensus on what works, the right technology, and laser focus on
increased access to healthy food.

From “ignoring the guidelines” to “changing the guidelines”

We know that food as medicine works, and we’re uniquely positioned to make it
the new norm. So where do we need to focus to make it a reality for the greatest
number of people? I heard two things:

 1. “Build an innovation ecosystem” around how we advance access to nutrition to
approach the deep disparities that are embedded around food in our society
(h/t Sachin H. Jain, MD, MBA, CEO of SCAN). Not everyone has equal access to
it. Not everyone can afford “healthy” food. Not everyone can eat the same
things. Focusing on the food alone in the absence of continued innovation in
care delivery is like missing the forest for the trees. We’re seeing that
personalized, community-aware approaches like Virta’s are delivering strong
outcomes across all groups - regardless of race, cultural background,
location, and socioeconomic status. We’ve got some powerful data on this to
    share in the coming weeks.
 2. Boldly going from “ignoring the guidelines” to “changing the guidelines” – I
can’t help but think about how the late Dr. Sarah Hallberg would’ve reacted
to this conference. Her viral TED Talk (9.7M views and counting) called for
us to “ignore the guidelines'' and “stop treating food with medicine” back
in 2015. I wonder what her message would be after today. The conversation is
finally shifting from “ignoring the guidelines” to boldly changing them.

Ultimately, this makes me think back to those Saturday football games with my
dad. In his final years as he was suffering from the effects of type 2 diabetes,
he couldn’t walk into or out of the stadium anymore. He had to watch the games
from home, without the roar of the crowd or feeling the vibrations from the
marching band. The red Ohio State tie I wore on Wednesday was in his memory and
honor. Had this conference been held a decade or two ago, I wonder how things
might’ve been different. This is why the conference feels like such a big deal.
It brought us together around making a simple but powerful idea a reality, and
one we’ve been working hard on at Virta: eradicating chronic diseases like
diabetes with nutrition.

Well done, Kevin — I very much appreciate your, and Virta’s, leadership on this
topic. As you’ve said before, the long arc of healthcare is certainly bending
towards food as medicine

Thanks, Angie! You would have been at home at the conference, too..."lifestyle
medicine" was a core tenet of the group, not seen as new/radical. This work has
advanced thanks to your leadership!

Thank you, Kevin. I am optimistic that we can deliver real progress. Your
efforts, representing the first company to reverse diabetes, at scale, without
surgery, and across a diverse population, are particularly important. The
implications are profound for future models of care delivery (continuous remote
care) and for public policy. As you know, Cybele Bjorklund and I wrote about
this in an opinion piece in Medcity News this past July. Integral to our
recommendations is the need to both incentivize optimum care (diabetes reversal)
and reverse or replace long-standing policies that contribute to poor nutrition
and chronic disease. The White House Conference is evidence that the time has
come, not just to talk about the problem, but to take action to bend the curve
toward health.

Couldn’t agree more, Dr. Groves! You and Thomas Grote have been leading from the
front at Banner|Aetna, where it’s making a difference already. Together we can
show that change is possible, and start to reverse the trend at a population
level!

Thank you for your thoughtful share. One thing both sides of the aisle can
certainly agree on is there’s got to be a better way. Americans deserve access
to education, affordable and healthy food options and an alternative to the
status quo. Thank you for representing, Kevin!
