 2. This Looks Like the Next M5 Touring in a Christmas Ad

THIS LOOKS LIKE THE NEXT M5 TOURING IN A CHRISTMAS AD

The next M5 wagon is expected to utilize a V-8 hybrid powertrain producing
somewhere in the range of 700 horsepower.

The next BMW M5 is just around the corner and, for the first time in three
generations, the automaker is preparing to release a wagon variant for global
markets. The brand has already shown us that wagon as a camouflaged testing
prototype. A Christmas ad goes one step further, revealing more details of the
car in gift wrapping.

The ad shows a few quick shots of the wrapped M5, which looks very much like a
2024 5-Series with more aggressive design features and some additional cargo
space in the back. Thankfully, the M5 appears to follow the basic 5-Series in
avoiding the massive kidney grilles of the M3, M4, and XM. The rear bumper is
reminiscent of the chunky new M2, but the M5 otherwise looks more like a
5-Series than not.

BMW still has not revealed either the M5 sedan or the standard 5-Series touring,
so the choice to showcase the M5 in its wagon form for this ad is a surprise.
The final M5 is expected to produce around 700 hp a system that combines a
4.4-liter V-8 and electric power, a major increase from the 627 hp available on
the range-topping M5 CS that sent off the last generation of the car. The final
frame of the ad includes the words "the ultimate electrified M power,"
suggesting that the next M5 will in fact be a hybrid producing big power as
expected.

While the five-door M5 is still not confirmed for the U.S. market, an October
report from BMW Blog suggested that U.S. buyers may finally get a chance to buy
a modern M5 wagon in the near future. The M5 Touring would join the Audi RS6 in
bringing a wagon body style stateside, ending a long tradition of companies
keeping their most spacious super-sedans out of the market. In June, the brand
told Road & Track that it was "currently evaluating the possibility of offering
the BMW M5 Touring in the U.S. market." After the latest wave of marketing
prominently advertising the M5 as a wagon first and foremost, buyers have a
reason for optimism.
