UPDATE:Remember when I said I wanted to love this mug? Well, I do now! I reached
out to Ember to share my disappointment in the product, added an even worse pic
than what you see here, and because the mug has a 1 year warranty they are
sending me a new one! The ceramic coating should NOT peel and therefore is
covered. One unfortunate thing is the black 14oz mugs directly from Ember are on
backorder so I will have to wait a bit, but I am happy that as the winter months
are approaching I will have my very much loved mug back! Thank you,
Ember!PREVIOUS REVIEW:I have owned my 14oz Ember mug for 9 months now, and all
but about 6 weeks of that time I have used my mug every day! I really was in
love with this mug. The app works great, it keeps my tea at the exact temp all
day long if I keep it on the charger, and the battery life off the charger is
nothing to sneeze at. Definitely have been diggin' my mug. But! This week I am
disappointed; crushed really. I have taken great care of my mug. From the get-go
I even bought bpa-free plastic spoons to stir my tea so as not to cause peeling
of the ceramic coating. I also always hand-wash and never use abrasive soaps or
cleaning tools on it. Well, my great care has been all for not. This week, while
carefully cleaning my mug, I noticed, at the bottom of my loved mug, it has
happened <sniff>, the ceramic coating is in fact peeling. So, now I must start
my search for a replacement. If this was a $30 or even $50 mug, I'd say it's
been a good run and just buy an exact replacement. But, the tag on this thing is
too high for that, in my opinion, and now I feel bad that I've given these as
gifts! So disappointed. 😥

I don't usually write reviews but I wanted to warn people when it comes to
Embers 80 min battery life claim. This isn't a cheap mug. It should do exactly
what they say it does. First of all, the mug is well made. It doesn't feel cheap
at all. It even keeps my drink at a hot 145 degrees like it says it will. My
problem is the battery itself. The second I take it off the charging base the
battery is at 95%. By the time I make my coffee/hot cider the battery is at 90%.
I haven't done a scientific study and looked at exactly how long my battery
lasted my first time but it wasn't even close to an hour. This would be ok if I
were only drinking one cup of coffee but I'm usually a 2 cup guy. No way will
you ever get 2 cups of hot coffee with this thing. And this was the new and
improved mug with extended battery life????

It seems more expensive than is necessary, but at least it does what it says,
and is high quality from what I can tell. You can't say that about most things
these days. I've only had it a few days, but it's worked perfect so far.
**UPDATE**
After contacting Ember customer support for assistance, I learned that ANYtime
the mug is placed on the charging coaster with liquid in it, it will not charge,
only maintain its current charge level. This is to protect the battery from
overheating I'm told. Now that this is known, it's not a huge deal, but leading
up to this I was confused as to why my mug was not charging, even when it had a
only a few sips of coffee left in it, and was set to a lower temp.
TL;DR the mug will not charge above its current level if you have liquid in it
and place it on the charging coaster. It also has a 2 hour auto-shutoff that
will invoke if it is left in place for 2 hours without moving. Apparently the
mug has accelerometers in it, did not expect that, clever! Still a great mug,
haven't timed the battery life, but I'd say it falls around the 1 hour mark or
so, not sure if I get a full 80 minutes out of it, but like I said, I haven't
timed it exactly yet, so maybe it is indeed getting there.
I've found that cocoa must have a different heat capacity than coffee, as every
time I put cocoa in the mug, I have to set the temp about 10-15 F higher than
with coffee, to achieve the same mouth temperature.
Still a great mug so far, but still too expensive. If the 10oz and 14oz Ember
Mug 2's were priced at $60 and $80 respectively, I think these would be perfect.

Bought this for my husband for Christmas as he is always getting up to heat his
coffee. Unfortunately we could never get it to pair with our Bluetooth. We
followed all the online troubleshooting steps (and we are both in IT so
technology is our job). We also wrote to the support team as listed on the
website. They never responded. I can understand a product failing and have no
issue with that but non existent customer support makes the product worthless

The ability for it to maintain its heat is quite wonderful. I have found my
perfect temperature is 131. I think my two largest complaints would be I do not
quite seem to ever get the full 80 minute battery life. Which is really not a
huge issue because I keep it on the coaster primarily. My other complaint is
that it does not hold enough liquid. Since it is the perfect temperature it is
hard to not just drink it all. Though I did also find the last 1/4 of the drink
tends to be hotter than the temperature I have it set to I think there might not
be quite enough liquid for it to get an accurate read on temperature.
Improvements I think would be worth while would be a method to adjust the
temperature without a smart phone. I did not want the mug so I lost out on the
ability to see the temperature and monitor it. From my perspective it is a
modest improvement over the first generation.
For the other hot beverage drinkers out there it may seem gimmicky but I have
found it extremely worth while because I get a lot more enjoyment out of every
cup instead of just those couple of sips at the right temperature.

What an expensive piece of garbage. The worst part about this is the app never
connects to the mug. As a programmer myself I don't understand how your
developers can be so incompetent, I could code a better connecting app alone. I
genuinely have no idea how an app could be released in this state by a company.
It almost never pairs, when it does it registers as 'empty' when it's not.
As for the mug itself, as I can't control it with the app it often times just
sits and burns the milk in my drink leaving a nice burt skin over the top of my
drink. Lovely.
I understand that this is just general incompetence from your dev team, but it
borders on blatant lying to customers about how well this works, it does not
work anywhere near as advertised.
The paint is also chipping away on the inside after only a few months use.

The mug does keep our drinks hot (we ordered two of the large mugs) and the
build quality is great, but in less than one month the paint is peeling /
chipping from the rim of the mug.
We do not want to consume ceramic paint despite claims that it may be non-toxic.
I saw at least one other reviewer citing this paint chipping problem which
continued after their mug was replaced twice. I can't see myself going through
that. I would need to have very strong assurances the replacement wouldn't have
the same problem...and I'm more likely to simply throw these mugs away.
I have seen in the U.S. they have created metallic versions (possibly without
paint - like the stainless steel version.) They are probably giving up on fixing
the paint chipping/peeling problem...but they don't currently offer the metallic
versions in Europe as far as I can see.

Tl;dr - Software and user interface let this product down. For the price I paid
I expected better. I would still recommend it, but with a inescapable sense of
disappointment and a hole in my pocket.
For many months now I've seen influencers the length and breadth of YouTube with
Ember mugs in their backgrounds and on their desks. As a wannabe influencer and
a massive tea drinker who works from home it was only a matter of time before I
found some excuse to buy myself this gift.
I bit the bullet last week and at first I was satisfied with it's simplicity and
elegance. It had all the hallmarks of a great scandi-influenced minimalist
design product with great utility. Was a bit disappointed to see an old school
ac adapter for the charging base instead of the now ubiquitous USB charging
(meaning I can't charge the mug from my desk without a free power adapter and an
extra cable.)
Unfortunately having now used the product for a week I think the minimalism goes
one step too far so you can never quite tell what "state" the mug is in, whether
your brew is being kept hot or slowly going cold takes a bit of divination.
See, the mug itself has an LED light indicator, which pulses different colours
to indicate different things, but unfortunately these indications are both
inconsistent and sometimes confusing.
Green means your battery is charged, not that your temperature is correct.
Pulsing white means your liquid is heating, but only if you added boiling liquid
to begin with.
Red means your battery is low... not that your mug is heating.
Oh and you can also choose a "custom" colour to identify between multiple mugs
in your house... but the default colour is also Red.
Then there's the app...
The app allows you to remotely set the temperature of your mug by bluetooth...
if you're lucky!
Pairing the mug was seamless the first time. Unfortunately you have to
re-discover it every time you use it. I imagine in an effort to save battery
they disabled the auto-search feature like most other bluetooth devices have,
what would have been better here is maybe to have it search once every 15
minutes maybe? As it stands I have to reselect the device in the app... every
time my phone has gone out of range.
The app also has handy temperature presets for different beverages, great. But
it also has a tea-timer... which stops timing if you switch app while you wait;
not great.
Now let's talk about the mugs fatal flaw - heating.
In a perfect world you would pour scalding water straight into your mug every
time to brew your coffee or tea, the mug recognises a sharp change in
temperature and takes its queue to wake up and monitor the temperature. But
unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world.
If you pour any liquid that is below about 60c (in my tests) like say... if you
brew leaf tea or filter coffee in another vessel (like anyone who cares enough
to spend £130 on a mug probably does!) Then sometimes, not every time, but often
enough to plant the seed of doubt in my mind, the mug doesn't recognise that
you've put anything in and despite the temperature reading 58c or whatever -
actually your brew is slowly going cold and you'll never know until you reach
for your dreams only to be met with the cold slops of reality as you imagine how
much your friends would laugh at you if they could see you now.
The only way to "wake" the mug, seems to be to stir or swirl the tea and wait
for the app temperature gauge to catch up and get back to work. Often it seems
like a pint of blood and your first born child wouldn't be enough of a sacrifice
for the Ember gods to smile down upon your sorry luke-warm soul.
8/10 times it's fine and works perfectly, and those last sups of 60c tea are
joyous. But those two-in-ten times are just enough to always have me glancing to
the side as I work and saying a quick prayer that the odds are in my favour this
time.
Great idea, mostly well designed except for the ac adapter, app needs work and
connectivity could be improved.
UI with the lights needs a rethink, they've sacrificed clarity for simplicity.
If I had bought this for £40 in Argos I'd be absolutely delighted with myself.

As others have mentioned, there are problems getting the mug to stay connected
to the app. This affects all features of the app, from setting temperatures to
changing colours and performing updates. I found a workaround on Reddit that
works for me that involves pairing the mug first through your phone settings,
then through the app:
1. Hold down the power button on the mug for about 14s until it flashes red,
then release.
2. In the app, go to your list of devices and long press your mug to delete it.
3. Open the Bluetooth settings in your phone, forget the mug.
4. Once the mug LED flashes white, hold the button down for about 4s until it
flashes blue
5. In the Bluetooth settings app in your phone, find the mug in the list of
available devices and pair it
6. Open the app, it will tell you you have no devices paired, follow the
instructions to pair the mug, including holding down the button for 4s again and
pairing the mug through the app.
Once I had done these steps (the key part is pairing it first through the phone)
I was able to perform an update and the mug reliably connected to the app each
time.
Once this was done I have been happy with the mug.

I always have a tea on the go and this is awesome. It connects without a problem
to the app on my iPhone. I have the temperature set to 55c and my tea is mostly
always good.
I say “mostly” because if I leave it too long, a skin forms on the top of the
tea. This normally takes an hour or so to happen, so is probably not an issue
for normal use. I get lost in my work and can forget about my hot cup of tea.
I also like to drink herbal teas. I use a tea infuser with ginger and lemon. I’m
able to pop the infuser in my cup and leet it steep for 15-20 mins before
drinking and it’s a perfect temperature.
I can’t speak highly enough about this mug, I absolutely love it.
There is one negative and that is the tea stains, but I suppose that’s probably
due to not washing my cup between cups of tea through the day. So, I suppose
this is the o be expected?
The stains do come out with a bit of elbow grease and some dish soap, so not a
deal breaker by any means.
