WHAT IS FOOD INSECURITY?

Food insecurity is a lack of consistent access to the food you need to live a
healthy life. In practice, that means making hard choices - choosing between
buying healthy food or paying bills, paying for gas, or even just buying enough
food.

Facing these choices regularly impacts a person’s health, both physically and
mentally.

Access to healthy food is an important social determinant of health.




WHY DOES FOOD INSECURITY MATTER?

Food insecurity is a growing problem everywhere, and especially in Central
Texas. 1 out of 7 people in Travis County are food insecure, including over
50,000 children.

Research has linked food insecurity to negative health outcomes over both the
short- and long-term. One of the best things we can do to improve the health of
our community is provide food for those that need it most.
