In cases of high volumes of freight, you should consider ocean freight. Here
are your directions on everything related to shipping by ocean, from picking
the mode that’s right for you to calculating transit times and costs.

Ocean Freight Meaning: What Is Ocean Freight?

Shipping containers are used in ocean freight transport.

The most common means of transport used by importers and exporters is by
ocean. In fact, 90% of everything is sent by sea and ocean freight. (By
courier, standard air freight, express air freight) The other modes of
international freight transportation are faster, but they are more expensive.
Smaller shipments, and products with high values, are typically sent via
   these other modes.

For those whose air freight is too expensive but ocean shipping too slow,
freight forwarders offer express shipping. While less expensive than air
freight, this service is often nearly as fast. Streamlining ocean freight
processes and partnering only with fast ocean and premium trucking services
   is how it works.

   Why Ship By Sea?

Approximately 10000 beer bottles can be held inside one container. And ocean
freight is cheaper. In general, shipments weighing more than 500 kg are too
expensive to ship by air. Use this calculator to determine if your shipment
will be charged by actual weight or volumetric weight for light shipments.
Please refer to our FBX index for the latest international shipping rates.

In the case of dangerous goods, international law, national law, carrier
organization regulations, and individual carrier regulations all play a role
in restricting and defining who can transport them. In general, more air
cargo is restricted than ocean freight, including: gases (e. lamp bulbs), all
things flammable (e.g. Items that are toxic or corrosive (e.g., perfume,
Samsung Galaxy Note 7). batteries), magnetic substances (e.g. Public health
risks (e.g., speakers, oxidizers, chemical medicines) arise from drivers
(e.g., air pollution). untanned hides). ocean Freight shipping TopAlpha To
learn more, refer to the Hazardous Material Table.

As compared with air freight, ocean freight’s CO2 emissions are minuscule. By
comparison, according to this study, 5000 kilometers of ocean freight can
cause 150 kg of carbon dioxide emissions, compared to 6605 kg from air
   freight.

What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?

There is about a 30x difference in average speed between airplanes and ocean
liners; passenger jets travel at 575 mph, while slow-steaming ocean liners
move at 16-18 mph. The air freight route from China to the US, therefore,
usually takes at least 20 days longer than ocean freight.

Constraints such as port congestion, environmental concerns, and bad weather
can delay ocean freight much more than air freight. Air freight tracking
technology is typically more advanced than ocean freight tracking technology.
Thus, ocean freight is more likely to get lost than air freight. Particularly
when the shipment is less than a container load, this is the case. Despite
this, digitization makes ocean freight more reliable.

In general, ocean freight is more likely to be damaged or destroyed than air
cargo. This is because it is in transit for a much longer time, and because
ships move more easily. If your ocean cargo falls off a ship, don’t worry too
much about it. Rather than 10 thousand containers per year being lost in the
drink, it’s more like 546 out of 120 million movements in a year. Even less
likely is piracy. The Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca
Straits are hotspots in recent years.

   Ocean Freight Services

Two further options under ocean and sea freight are a full container load
(FCL) and a less than container load (LCL). A LCL container contains several
shipments packed together. The forwarder has additional work to do, there’s
extra paperwork, and there’s the physical work of consolidating multiple
shipments into one container before the main transit, and then de-combining
the shipments once they reach their destination. This gives LCL three
   disadvantages:

It takes a long time for an LCL shipment to arrive as compared to an FCL
shipment. The manufacturer typically recommends allowing an additional week
   or two for LCL.

Loss, misplacement, and damage are more likely to occur with LCL.

LCL costs more per cubic meter.

In general, the shipping rates for FCL are much lower than for LCL, so it may
be worthwhile to use a full container once your shipment grows large enough,
even if your shipment does not fill the entire container. About 15 cubic
meters is the tipping point to upgrade from LCL to FCL (the smallest
container size is a 20 footer).

   Sea Freight Rates per kg

A majority of LCL shipments are priced based on volume rather than weight,
with the exception of particularly heavy goods.

If selecting the most cost-effective mode is a challenge, consider these
   general rules of thumb:

For shipments of 500 kg and more, air freight is no longer economical.

The cost of ocean freight is usually $2-4/kg, and a shipment from China to
the US typically takes 30-40 days.

A shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg from China to the US can be transported
economically by air freight and take around 8-10 days.

Air freight by express is faster but more expensive.

If the package weight is less than 150 kg, it can be sent by courier (express
   freight).

Costs, rates, and charges for ocean and sea freight quotes:

These items will be included on ocean freight quotes and invoices:
