IMMERSIVE 11.1 SOUNDS. The Superior Drummer 3 sound library was recorded using
eleven additional room microphones set up in a surround configuration. This will
enable you to produce drum mixes for use in anything from stereo to 5.1, 9.1 and
all the way up to 11.1 systems.

The Superior Drummer 3 core sound library was recorded at Galaxy Studios in
Belgium. With its 330-square-meter room and eight meter ceiling height, it was
the ideal location for capturing immersive audio of the utmost quality. In
addition, the entire studio complex is built on springs to ensure that the
outside interference is literally nonexistent. In fact, with only 14 dBA of
environmental noise, the main hall at Galaxy Studio is the most quiet recording
space of this size in the world.

matter of minutes – and Superior Drummer 3 has a wealth of sounds to choose

REPLACE.
Have a drum track recorded in a garage? Not a problem. Drop your files and
Tracker will convert them to MIDI. With the meticulously sampled sounds of
Superior Drummer 3, all of the subtlety and detail of the original performance
will be preserved.
OFFLINE.
Tracker works offline, meaning everything happens right now. Simply put, this
means speed and accuracy. As soon as you import an audio file, it quickly and
intelligently analyzes it faster and more accurately than was ever possible
before.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Tracker uses artificial intelligence based on supervised machine learning. This
means that we “taught” Tracker how drums and cymbals sound. We actually fed it
over 1.3 million audio files using every conceivable microphone and position.
The result? An artificial intelligence machine that can detect even the most
subtle ghost notes of an instrument.
REFINE.
For the trickiest of audio files, Tracker has a selection of smart refinement
tools that allow you to identify sounds, find similar sounds, select by note
value, and trigger or de-trigger them in an instant.
Over the past four decades, George Massenburg has been involved in over 400
records. His work includes milestone albums by Earth, Wind & Fire, Linda
Ronstadt, Natasha Bedingfield, Herbie Hancock, Billy Joel, the Dixie Chicks and
many, many more.
George’s work has gained him world wide recognition and four Grammy Awards,
including the Grammy for Technical Achievement in 1998, at the time making him
one of only seventeen individuals to ever receive this honor.
In addition to numerous Mix Magazine TEC Awards, in 1988 he also won the Academy
of Country Music Record of the Year Award for his production on the album “Trio”
featuring Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
Further, George has designed, built and managed several recording studios as
well as contributed to the acoustical and architectural design of many other
studios, including George Lucas’ Skywalker Sound. In 1982, he founded George
Massenburg Labs, an audio electronics company that has released an extensive
range of innovative recording technologies, all based on his original designs.
Regularly published in professional journals and trade magazines world wide,
George Massenburg received the Gold Medal from the Audio Engineering Society in
2008.
In 2013, he was awarded a patent #8,510,361 in the US (as well as other
countries) for a variable exponent averaging detector and dynamic range
controller.
He is also a member of the National Recording Preservation Board of the Library
of Congress and an advisor to the Committee for Library Information Resources.
George serves as the Chief Technical Officer of META (the Music Engineering
Technical Alliance), a strategic union of music producers and engineers
dedicated to the highest standards of audio and delivery of music.
George has also been awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music by Boston’s esteemed
Berklee College of Music.
Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Sound Recording at the Schulich
School of Music at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and a Visiting
Lecturer at the Berklee College Of Music in Boston and Valencia, Spain as well
as the University of Memphis in Memphis, TN.
Superior Drummer 3 called for a superior engineer. These are his drum sounds –
captured with layers of technology and a lifetime of experience to back it up.

Layers of technology. George and team are carefully placing each microphone to
capture the immense ambience of the 330 square meter Galaxy room.
Each room is a standalone bunker, mounted on helical springs. The insolation
between each bunker is a staggering 100.7 dB.
When sampling drums in surround and height, you need – height. The Galaxy hall
with its eight meters from floor to ceiling was the perfect choice.
The studio took seven years to complete and a total of 318,000 man hours were
spent to achieve the full construction of the facility.

“My aim was to give the end user the essential building blocks needed to quickly
get an authentic groove going. Coupled with the Edit Play Style, Song Track and
Grid Editor features in Superior Drummer 3, customizing drum parts and building
entire drum tracks literally takes minutes.”
You didn’t only perform the MIDI for Superior Drummer 3, you also sampled the
entire core library. How was it sitting through sampling six kits (some several
times with different tools), 35 configurations of snares, 27 configurations of
bass drums – and on top of that countless cymbals?
It was such a great and unique experience! To capture the different tones and
sonic flavors of these fantastic instruments in this extreme detail felt like
being in drummer’s paradise. The process required a lot of concentration and
focus, though. When sampling in a room this perfectly balanced and with this
array of microphones, you actually have to concentrate to a level where your
breathing is involved. It’s tedious work to “almost” breathe and still be 100%
focused on your task for up to 12 hours straight, but I actually enjoyed every
last second of it.
How long did it actually take and do you have any idea of how many hits you
stroke?
The process of recording a snare with all velocities and different articulations
usually takes a few hours, so you can imagine how much longer it took to record
a complete kit with lots of toms, different bass drums, different heads, tunings
and cymbals! Oh no, I have really no clue on how many hits I actually played,
haha!
How was it to hook up these sounds to your e-kit and playing them for the first
time?
It felt totally unreal, I can tell you that! I have played a lot of acoustic
drums in my life. These samples felt just as real as sitting behind an actual
acoustic kit. I was completely blown away. I was literally back in the room and
could hear and feel every little detail of the drums. The response is the best I
have ever experienced. For me personally it also had the strange effect of
hearing my own recorded strokes while I was playing them. It was magical, like
calling yourself on the phone!
THE MIDI.
The Superior Drummer 3 MIDI library was designed to provide a wealth of
fundamental groove and fill variations for mainstream pop, rock and
singer-songwriter material.
It also has a few dedicated sections for metal as well as an ‘Extras’ category
with count ins, snare rolls and MIDI files specifically designed for use with
brushed samples. In total, the library encompasses in excess of 1,600
individually played files, all categorized in common song structure parts.
