NOUNS WINTER SHELTER: SAVING CATS & DOGS
Nouns Shelter is a temporary name and we are currently working on updating this
to something that can be turned into a media brand name
TLDR
Proliferating Nouns through animal shelter awareness, adoption campaigns, and
supporting shelter homes.
INTRODUCTION
My name is Coral Ding and I'm creating a media brand focusing on spreading
awareness of animal welfare opportunities with Sharon Liu and Kiki Zhang. We are
interested in proliferating the Nouns brand through public goods in China by
working directly with established shelter stations in Beijing this winter while
growing an authentic media presence focused on helping rescue animals in need.
I've been exploring the world of Web3 for the past few years on and off and
meeting the Nouns team at The International this year in Seattle was the first
time I've felt such a profound meaning towards public goods. I am so thankful
for projects like Nouns Esports, Mucho Love, and the rest of the community for
building a community that has motivated me to explore how I could provide value
back to the community too.
BACKGROUND
With the global economy dwindling, support for stray animals which is primarily
donation based has gone to an all time low in the past decade and China has
started to take a strict approach towards strays by euthenizing instead of
rehoming shelter animals as the winter season approaches.
Across all social media, distressing posts have surfaced pleading for assistance
for abandoned stray animals due to lack of medical care and adoption prospects.
I had the opportunity to meet one of the heroes focusing on rescuing and
sheltering these strays named Qiuqiu, a tireless volunteer who has selflessly
dedicated herself to rescuing and sheltering over 200 dogs and 100 cats in
Beijing, China. Admist shifting policies and market challenges, she has been
able to rent six different locations to provide these animals refuge, but as
winter approaches, urgent help is needed to sustain their care. Qiuqiu's
shelters are struggling to cope with the increasing demands for warmth, food,
medical care, and volunteer support.
OUR GOAL
Our goal is to establish the foundation for a Nouns media brand that is focused
on supporting animal welfare and sharing the stories of animal rescue volunteers
to the global audience.
OUR PLAN
We would like to begin our plans through working with established partners to
host a charity event, focusing on phased releases of Nouns mini shelter homes,
providing pet food through the winter, and a creation of consistent media
showcasing our partners and the loving pets of their communities.
The proposed event would take place from January 1, 2024 through March 15, 2024
and will focus on two primary intiatives:
* Food Donations in the name of Nouns Community
* Purchasing dog and cat food under the Nouns brand and donating it directly
to Qiuqiu's stray animal shelter.
* The donated food will be instrumental in sustaining the 300+ dogs and cats
currently being sheltered by Qiuqiu, as well as aiding in the ongoing
rescue efforts to save as many strays through the winter as possible.
* Nouns Mini Shelter Production & Distribution
* Collaborating with Qiuqiu's Shelter to manufacture and distribute 300+
Nouns Mini Shelters to locations in need across Beijing.
* These shelters aim to provide safe refuge for at least 1500+ stray animals,
ensuring their protection from the harsh subzero winter weather.
WHAT ARE NOUNS MINI SHELTERS?
Nouns Mini Shelters are permanent insulated shelters built for helping stray
animals stay warm through the winter weather of Northern China. Our Nouns Mini
Shelters have gone through four iterations of development and utilize PVC
insulation film and tin foil insulated cotton to maintain structural integrity
through the weight of winter snow and each comes equipped with blankets inside
to house up to 4-6 animals each.
Based on previous years, these mini shelters have a 60% retention rate through
each winter and can be reutilized the following year. Human theft is the highest
cause of loss of these shelters and we will be choosing rural locations with a
high density of stray animals to reduce the loss of these shelters.
VALUE PROPOSITION TO NOUNS
Brand Visibility and Recognition: The establishment of a Nouns-branded shelter
room within Qiuqiu's shelter, as well as the 300+ durable Nouns Mini Shelters,
presents an exclusive branding opportunity for Nouns . This designated space
allows for the incorporation of Nouns-themed content, enhancing brand visibility
while aligning with the values of compassion and community support.
Increasing Nouns' influence in China and the field of animal protection: The
collaboration will facilitate a continuous flow of animal protection events and
awareness programs centered around animal welfare and responsible adoption
practices in Beijing. Nouns involvement fostering a positive impact on societal
values.

adoption and protecting stray animals and will work to proliferate Nouns Shelter

Farcaster: Weekly Posts to Nouns Farcaster Group documenting progress and
highlights of the campaign along with a few interviews of people directly
involved with this campaign.
Instagram: Highlight clips and videos showcasing cute pets being saved and
rehomed
Weibo: Chinese language update documenting progress and highlights of the
campaign. Weibo will be our primary update outlet for future campaigns with
partners.
Little Red Book (小红书): Chinese language awareness campaigns and collaboration
updates with netizens who are interested in collaborating to increase the
proliferation of Nouns Shelter.

there hasn't been much iteration since the signal feedback phase which made me
hesitate a bit... but ultimately deciding to vote in favor
i want to say that when nouns voters are asking for better design it's not like
we're just superficial ppl and only care about what something looks like rather
than what it actually is. i feel like the inverse is actually true. ppl that
deeply care about what they do care about it to an extent that they put effort
into the things that might not seemingly matter as much to others and we're
worried that the design presented at the prop voting phase is reflective of
eventual substance (execution)
anyways, mucho love wasn't fully baked in the first prop either and this is a
strong enough starting point that i'd love to support it and see it happen.

1. I agree with the feedback on the visual design direction of this prop, but
like many others I'm voting in favor of because this prop unblocks support
that can meaningfully change lives.
2. In future rounds, I strongly encourage authors to seriously consider
ccarella's feedback to increase the impact of this initiative through strong
visual design and potential for proliferation.
As such, I would regard this as the MVP, with potential for future iterations
that addresses quality and scalability.

I think in principle, this prop is very nounish. I agree that the general
branding could use some work, and also I'm not sure that as much needs to be
spent on merch and promo as what's being proposed. Asking the proposer to try
and only spend what's absolutely needed on these things, and put any savings you
can find towards the things that really matter like food and shelter for the
animals in need. And yes, spend a bit of time to make the designs pop because it
will be more fun that way. Thank you for helping the helpless in the name of
nouns!

helpful feedback from dissenters but overall find marketing finesse an
uncompelling reason to downvote a modest prop doing something positive while
treasury is contracting as rapidly as it is. to me the logo is endearingly lo-fi
and its arguable more polish there will make the project feel less genuine. but
this is not about branding/proliferation to me. its just about doing something
nice and in that context being minimal with the tangentials resonates. hope they
are allowed to get on with it and feedback can be absorbed by iterators

I was touched by the activities of these kind-hearted people. Many people are
healed by dogs and cats. I think these activities will also enhance the
invisible brand value of Nouns in the long run. They can think about the design
of the shelter and the logo after the proposal is approved, and also they can
promote the branding of them while keeping a firm budget through continuous
support.

I'm supportive of this concept and I'm only voting Against because I think this
can come back with some adjustments and be a flagship prop and great success for
Nouns. Here are my suggestions:
1. Revisit the Visual Design language. I don't feel the visual design is up to
Nounish standards. Like the Wet Wipes prop this could be designed by Prop
House and result in an exceptional design that makes Nouns proud.
2. Remove the bulk food donation and refactor it so that its tied to each Mini
Shelter. For example each Mini Shelter comes with X months of food supply.
This way others in the future know that if they want 100 Mini Shelters, they
also need to supply X amount of food.
3. CC0 the design of the Mini Shelters. This is Nouns after all. CC0'ing the
designs and letting others build their own would be rad. These Mini Shelters
can be a Public Good.
4. Work to find another organization in another part of the world to also do
this. They could use the CC0 designs or buy the Mini Shelters directly from
you. Ideally they have their own funding source but see this Mini Shelters
as a need to fill. This is how Nouns Mini Shelters become a movement and not
just a one-time donation.
I'll re-iterate that me and dog love this Concept and I'm voting No because I
see a Good prop with the potential to be a Great prop that could start a
movement.

generally supportive but i'm a bit less excited about the pet food bulk donation
portion of the funding since that's more like just making a straight donation to
an existing shelter. i like the portable mini shelters a lot since they have a
more unique execution energy.
i would work on branding and logo design a bit more (current logo is a bit meh)
since being a bit lazy on the aesthetics often signal to the voters that there's
not enough care put in (or the execution quality low)
also i'll just note that the reality is that nouns isn't a charity org (we're an
experimental onchain society supported by our own art sales) and if you can't
attract attention to the charitable act that you're doing here (especially in
the onchain world or online spaces) we probably cannot continue to fund since
it's not helping us compound provenance to our artwork and supporting our world
anyhow thanks for the prop. love that you found nouns through the international
at seattle (nouns esports ftw). good luck!

Thanks you guys for the support, responding to Onizuka's great questions below!
The weibo accounts are supporters who are willing to post about our event and
subsequent activations along with any adoptions they do and will feature Nouns
branding in the background. There is currently a ban on NFT/blockchain related
content for large creators, but we are hopeful this may change in the coming
year as the government starts to unveil their plans for blockchain. (We would
love to talk to whoever creates the noggles and see if we could get something to
China in time for these activations so people can wear and post them!!!!!)
You’re correct on farcaster (updates directly to the Nouns community). IG is
planned as an events content showcase and maybe IG live in the future for
virtual adoption (we originally had a really cool concept for donating on
livestreams and being able to name a nouns branded collar for a virtually
adopted shelter animal, but this was out of scope for the budget). Weibo will be
the main vehicle to work with larger collaborators and 小红书 will be our main
outlet for day-to-day conversations about awareness for animal welfare (where
our idea started!).
For all of these accounts, we would start ground up with support from friends to
co promote until we hit our stride. We have tried to contact the nounsCN team
previously to collaborate, but are in the opinion that a fresh start may be good
and have been in contact with another Noun holder who has reserved a few great
handles for these platforms. Pending campaigns running well, we are hopeful that
this proposal and support from local activists will give us enough momentum to
continue adoption and pet food donation practices after the initial campaigns
are over!

Are they committing to making social media post(s) about Nouns Shelter? The DAO?
For the social media strategy, farcaster updates will presumably go to the nouns
channel, but can you clarify Instagram/Weibo/Red?
Will these be existing accounts (if so, which?) or new Nouns (nouns china?)
social media accounts getting created? If new accounts is there a plan to use
