IRDAI has asked the industry to reach premiums worth Rs 12 trillion from Rs 2.2
trillion, in the next five years.

The growth targets for both life and non-life insurance businesses will depend
on several variables, including the rate of increase in insurance cover demand,
macroeconomic growth, and consumer perceptions of inflation, said Anand Pejawar,
Deputy Managing Director, SBI General Insurance.



"We are optimistic about achieving the targets set for us in FY23 by IRDAI.
Probably, this is the first time in history, any Regulator has given growth
estimates to individual industry players. A very welcome move," said the DMD in
an exclusive interview.

During the interaction, he spoke about how traditional insurance companies are
competing in a digital setup and are facing certain challenges around legacy
systems. He also highlighted the key factors for the projected sectoral growth,
while mapping down the company's investment strategy and growth plans.

Edited Excerpts:

How competent are traditional insurers in offering digital solutions?

Traditional businesses are assertively positioned to thrive through digital
transformation since they have sizeable resources, robust systems & processes,
wide experience, a large customer base, affinity, and more importantly customer
loyalty, created over a long period of time.

They are at par with tech-first insurance companies in terms of building an
agile technological infrastructure within the companies. This is empowered with
in-house specialized IT teams, digital departments, virtual offices concept, and
digital SBU’s focus on disrupting the insurance industry with digital solutions.



Companies have not only focused on digital solutions but also to ease the lives
of people by providing value-added services. This is also keeping in mind the
paradigm shift in the buying psychology of the customer, especially the ‘Gen Y’
generation.

Do you prefer building in-house solutions or partnering with other tech players
in the ecosystem?

SBI General has been at-par with industry peers in terms of digitisation and we
have developed a robust tech architecture platform that is reliable, flexible,
and agile.

Since we operate in a service-oriented sector, we have a significant interest in
creating a digital ecosystem and have a strong focus on partnerships with
investech, fintech, healthtech, traveltech, and e-commerce to improve user
experience and streamline processes.

Additionally, during the past couple of years, we have concentrated on
developing our own digital solutions, employing internal teams with a clear
focus on process automation. We strive to create the right balance in our tech
investments.

Are traditional insurers facing challenges in shifting from legacy systems to
modern solutions?

The range of legacy systems, including both technological and (manual) operating
systems, is one of the biggest and most common challenges.

The conversion of paper-based data into a digital format has been a significant
barrier for traditional companies.

In addition to this, insurance businesses frequently have core technological
systems that are not interconnected leading to information gaps and inefficient
data handling. However, these are being overcome using peripheral applications
to support the core application and keep it nimble. The bigger challenge for
such companies is to see how to make the user adjust and adapt to the new
digitised systems.

According to reports, India is poised to become the 6th largest insurance market
globally. What are the reasons for such optimistic outlook?

The pandemic has caused a tectonic shift in the Indian insurance sector, and
systematic change is one of the key factors for the projected sectoral growth.
The increased risk management awareness and growing health concerns, have led to
an increase in the demand for health insurance.

The revival of the pre-covid era has led to strong growth for businesses, which
in turn has fueled growth in the commercial insurance lines.

More and more companies are moving towards – “Paperless – Pen less” issuance of
policies. This is easily possible with integrations with the financial ecosystem
available in the country.

Indian insurers are concentrating on maximizing the potential of data-driven
decision-making and analytics. This has translated into the industry seeing
innovative products being introduced, newer technologies implemented, newer
agile systems and overall, a completely new look to the industry. They must
nevertheless develop digital ecosystems that transcend silos.

What is SBI General's investment strategy for the remaining and next fiscal?

SBI General has made significant investments building new capabilities to
overhaul all the verticals of the Company ranging from Bancassurance channel, to
establishing a new and separate health vertical, enhancing Rural and Digital
verticals to stay future-ready.

It has also enabled us to produce enhanced profitability and improve the core
system and peripheral applications for a quicker go-to-market.

In terms of Distribution, we have been expanding our reach by empaneling more of
corporate associates viz Digital partners, Gramin Banks, (RRB’s), new age small
banks, private banks, broking institutions, and other financial institutions
having large customer base.

At SBI General, we are also examining and optimizing our Estimation Tool &
Predictive Assessment based on AI, paperless claim handling, software
application for Motor TP & Consumer Litigation Claims, optimising hospital
network, and fraud predictive model for claim settlement and underwriting
decisions.
