Well Go USA has revealed the official US trailer for a cheesy Vietnamese sci-fi kids movie titled Maika: The Girl from Another Galaxy, opening in theaters this June. This already premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, playing in the Kids section. After a meteor falls to earth, 8-year-old Hung meets an alien girl from the planet Maika, searching for her lost friend. The alien girl helps Hung make new friends and heal a broken heart. But danger lurks everywhere. Together, they go on an adventure to help Maika find a way home and escape from some local criminals. The fun film stars Phu Truong Lai, Diep Anh Chu, Tin Tin, Ngoc Tuong, and Kim Nha. I actually watched this during Sundance and it's enjoyable (my review), even if it is so cheesy and obvious, because there's a strange kind of charm to it. Definitely meant for kids but some adults might enjoy it, too. LevelFilm has revealed an official trailer for the indie dark comedy The Middle Man, the latest film made by an award-winning Norwegian filmmaker named Bent Hamer - one of his biggest hits was the indie Factotum from 2005 with Matt Dillon. This new one already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, but it hasn't made its way down to the US yet despite taking place in the US. The film is set in Karmack, a small town in the American Midwest that is so economically depressed that it hires Frank Farrelli as a middle man to deliver bad news to people because none of the residents can bear to do it themselves anymore. Norwegian actor Pål Sverre Hagen stars as Frank, with a cast including Don McKellar, Kenneth Welsh, Paul Gross, Trond Fausa, Aksel Hennie, and Bill Lake. This looks like a very strange, awkward film but it's also made by an experienced filmmaker and doesn't seem half bad. Marvel has revealed the first official trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, one of their next series coming to Disney+ streaming later this year. "You'll like her when she's angry," is the cheesy tagline for this one. Hulk is back! But not the Hulk you know, though he's in this, too. Time for someone entirely different. The new series introduces us to Jennifer Walters, played by Tatiana Maslany, who becomes a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk. She tries to maintain her job as an attorney while dealing with the challenges of being big & green. It also co-stars Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Jameela Jamil, along with former Hulk stars Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth (who became "Abomination" in the The Incredible Hulk movie from 2008 - how's that continuity). This does not look that good, but maybe they just need more time to polish the VFX. The 2022 Cannes Film Festival begins this week, and I'm back in the South of France for my 12th time covering this festival. I always love being back, and even with updates and frustrations, there is nowhere else I'd rather be right now. Choosing an Opening Night film for any festival is always a daunting task. This year the Cannes opener is the French zombie comedy called Final Cut (or Coupez! in French), which just so happens to be a French remake of the beloved Japanese indie classic One Cut of the Dead. It was originally set to premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, but when that festival announced they would have to shut down their physical in-person fest due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film backed out. I had a feeling it would end up in Cannes instead, and yep, I was right. And here it is! Ready to knock the socks off of the audiences in Cannes and remind them that filmmaking is a collaborative effort. Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie comedy from Denmark titled Wild Men, which is finally getting a US release this June. It first premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and also stopped by the Neuchâtel and Fantasia Film Festivals. In a desperate attempt to cure his midlife crisis, Martin has fled his family to live high up in the Norwegian mountains. Hunting and gathering like his ancestors did thousands of years ago, living in the wild. But surprise, surprise, Martin's quest for manhood leads to deep and hilariously uncomfortable realizations about the presumed masculine ideal. Rasmus Bjerg stars as Martin, with an extra manly cast including Zaki Youssef, Bjørn Sundquist, Marco Ilsø, Jonas Bergen Rahmanzadeh, Håkon T. Nielsen, Tommy Karlsen, Rune Temte, and Sofie Gråbøl. This looks like a Taika Waititi comedy but from Scandinavia, with a hilarious cast of characters and so many wacky scenes. I'm looking forward to catching up with this sometime soon. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted 21 hours ago in Foreign Film, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment CAPTIVATING TEASER FOR HBO'S 'IRMA VEP' SERIES STARRING ALICIA VIKANDER By Alex Billington "You play tough, but you're so candid." HBO has unveiled a teaser trailer for their new series Irma Vep, an adaptation of the cult favorite Irma Vep film from 1996. French director Olivier Assayas adapts his own film and turns it into an HBO series, writing and directing all eight episodes of this for a summer debut. The first two eps are screening at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, but the entire mini-series will be available in early June to watch anyway. Mira is an American movie star disillusioned by her career and recent breakup, who comes to France to star as Irma Vep in a remake of the French silent film classic, Les Vampires. In this one, Alicia Vikander stars in the main role that Maggie Cheung originally played in the 1996 film. "This is the part she’s been dying to play." The cast also includes Devon Ross, Byron Bowers, Tom Sturridge, Adria Arjona, Fala Chen, Carrie Brownstein, Lars Eidinger, Vincent Lacoste, along with Vincent Macaigne as her French director René. This looks even better than expected! Might need to watch after all. They're like gifts." Madman Films in Australia has debuted an official trailer for a French indie drama titled The Passengers of the Night, ahead of it premiere at the Sydney Film Festival in June. The film first screened at the Berlin Film Festival, but it didn't really pick up any great reviews. Set in 1981 in Paris, this is sort of an autobiographical tale of a French family. Left by her husband, Elisabeth finds herself alone, responsible for the day-to-day care of her two children. She picks up a job on a night-time radio show, where she meets the free-spirited Talulah, a youngster she decides to take under her wing. "This heart-warming film is filled with small acts of kindness that have profound effects." Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Elisabeth, joined by Noée Abita as Talulah, Quito Rayon Richter, Megan Northam, Thibault Vinçon, and Emmanuelle Béart. This film does indeed have an impressive soundtrack and some nice cinematography, but there's not much more to it than that. I saw this at Berlinale and didn't care for it much unfortunately, but that's just my own personal take on it. Worth a look anyway. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted 23 hours ago in Foreign Film, Indies, To Watch, Trailer | 2 Comments DAISY EDGAR-JONES IN 'WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING' SECOND TRAILER By Alex Billington "The marsh taught me how to survive… but it couldn't teach me everything." Sony Pictures has debuted a second official trailer for Where The Crawdads Sing, arriving in theaters this July. The film is a Deep South mystery thriller based on the bestselling novel of the same name. Both this trailer and the first trailer are invigorating and promising looks at what might be one of this summer's non-action movie highlights. A woman who raised herself in the marshes of the Deep South in North Carolina becomes hunted as the main suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with. Where the Crawdads Sing stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kya Clark, Taylor John Smith as Tate, Harris Dickinson as Chase, Michael Hyatt as Mabel, Sterling Macer, Jr. "Jumpin'", and David Strathairn as Tom Milton. Produced by Reese Witherspoon, with cinematography by Polly Morgan. This looks so much better than it should! So many gorgeous shots in this trailer, along with a riveting story about this woman and all the folks that never liked her. Check it out. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted 23 hours ago in To Watch, Trailer | 2 Comments CHRIS HEMSWORTH & MILES TELLER IN NETFLIX THRILLER 'SPIDERHEAD' TRAILER By Alex Billington "We're making the world a better place!" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for one of their big summer movies titled Spiderhead, directed by visionary filmmaker Joseph Kosinski. He went and made THIS in-between finishing Top Gun: Maverick (in 2020) and now, when Top Gun is finally being released, meaning Kosinski has TWO exciting new movies out this summer. Based on The New Yorker short story by George Saunders, Spiderhead is a genre-bending and darkly funny psychological thriller. In the near future, convicts are offered the chance to volunteer as medical subjects to shorten their sentence. One such subject for a new drug capable of generating feelings of love begins questioning the reality of his emotions. The cast features Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller, Jurnee Smollett, Mark Paguio, and Tess Haubrich. At first glance, this is seems like a mash-up between Snowpiercer and A Cure for Wellness, with the patients fighting back in this strange research facility. I'm in! Curious to find out what's really happening… Drip on? Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted 24 hours ago in To Watch, Trailer | 5 Comments FIRST PROMO TRAILER FOR ALI ABBASI'S 'HOLY SPIDER' PREMIERING IN CANNES By Alex Billington "You'll witness… the invisible hand of God at work." Cinetic has revealed the first festival promo trailer for a new film titled Holy Spider, which is premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival kicking off this week in France. This is the latest film from an Iranian-Danish filmmaker named Ali Abbasi, who earned acclaim for his excellent Swedish troll film Border that played at Cannes a few years ago (you have to see it!). Holy Spider is playing in the Main Competition this year, a big upgrade for Abassi and a chance at winning some festival awards. A journalist descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called "Spider Killer", who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners. The PR describes it as "gritty thriller" and it doesn't seem like there are any supernatural twists. Holy Spider stars Zar Amir Ebrahimi and Mehdi Bajestani. One of my most anticipated Cannes films this year - this looks damn good. There are some touches of Memories of Murder in here. Take a look. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted May 17 in Cannes 22, Foreign Film, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment BEN WINCHELL LOOKS FOR MEANING IN LIFE IN 'THE ROAD TO GALENA' TRAILER By Alex Billington "Time passes and suddenly you realize, 'this is it.'" Vertical Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled The Road to Galena, which will be out to watch starting this July. The film is another of these "what if you had everything, but you still felt something was missing?" kind of existential dramas. Power lawyer Cole Baird has all the trappings of success, but behind the façade, he’s crippled by a career he never wanted and a dream left behind. He now has a choice to make: continue a life of emptiness or follow the path to happiness back to his small, rural hometown. "A touching story of one man's quiet desperation giving way to fulfillment; a story that motivates us to travel our own roads toward a more meaningful life." The film stars Ben Winchell as Cole, Will Brittain, Jay O. Sanders, Jill Hennessy, Alisa Allapach, Jennifer Holliday, plus Margaret Colin, and Aimee Teegarden. Looks like a wholesome story about coming to realize money isn't everything, and that a simpler life might be better than one more glamorous. Watch the Trailer › TwitterRedditGmail › Posted May 17 in Indies, To Watch, Trailer | 1 Comment OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR 'WHITE ELEPHANT' ACTION MOVIE WITH ROOKER & WILLIS By Alex Billington "Just get rid of them both, whatever the cost." Another day, another bad Bruce Willis action movie. There's an official trailer available now for White Elephant, the latest from the mindless action filmmaker Jesse V. Johnson (The Debt Collector, Triple Threat, Avengement, The Mercenary, Debt Collectors, Hell Hath No Fury). When an assassination attempt goes wrong, an ex-marine-turned-mob enforcer is forced to set things right or face the wrath of his ruthless mob boss. If that sounds like nearly every other boring action film recently, it's because it is exactly that, and they're not doing much different besides just shaking the bottle each time. Bruce Willis & Michael Rooker star, along with Michael Rose, Olga Kurylenko, Vadhir Derbez, and John Malkovich. This looks so bland and awful, please don't waste any of your time on this.
