YEAR OF POLAR PREDICTION The Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) is the flagship activity of PPP with the aim of enabling a significant improvement in environmental prediction capabilities for the polar regions and beyond, by coordinating a period of intensive observing, modelling, verification, user-engagement and education activities. The Year of Polar Prediction was composed of three phases with the core phase taking place during the period May 2017 to June 2019. A short video introducing YOPP can be found here. NEWS THE POLAR PREDICTION PROJECT ENDS ON A HIGH. 02 January 2023 On 31 December 2022 the ten year Polar Prediction Project (PPP) came to an end along with its flagship activity the Year Of Polar Prediction (YOPP). Whilst PPP and YOPP have now finished, three key groups will continue for at least 2023, these are the Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (MIIP) led by Prof Gunilla Svensson from the University of Stockholm, the Year of Polar Prediction in the Southern Hemisphere (YOPP-SH) led by Prof David Bromwich from the Byrd Polar Institute at Ohio State University and the PPP Societal and Economic Research Applications group (PPP-SERA) led by Prof Machiel Lamers from the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. The recording of the plenary discussions from the YOPP Final Summit (see also yoppfinalsummit.com for further details) can be found at the YOPP Youtube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@yearofpolarpredictionpolar6442. Researchers are encouraged to review the PPP/YOPP related publications available via the YOPP google scholar account (https://scholar.google.de/citations?user=tbR5tOAAAAAJ&hl=en) and where appropriate include PPP/YOPP in your publications as per the recommendations at https://www.polarprediction.net/publications/yopp-acknowledgement/ The Polar Prediction Project Steering Group and the International Coordination Office located at AWI thank you for your interest in and support of PPP/YOPP over the last ten years and wish you future success in your efforts in Polar Prediction. Find all news items here. The PPP Steering Group recently met at the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki (photo: Kati Johansson/Finnish Meteorological Institute) THE PPP STEERING GROUP (PPP-SG) The planning and implementation of PPP and YOPP is overseen by a Steering Group (PPP-SG) of international experts (find more information on the Steering Group here). The Steering Group is supported by the International Coordination Office for Polar Prediction (ICO), which is hosted at the Alfred Wegener Institute. The International Coordination Office for Polar Prediction (photo: Lorenzo Zampieri/Alfred Wegener Institute) INTERNATIONAL COORDINATION OFFICE FOR POLAR PREDICTION (ICO) The PPP Steering Group is supported by the International Coordination Office for Polar Prediction, which is hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in the context of a Memorandum of Understanding with the World Meteorological Organization. Read more about the ICO. The YOPP Data Portal is hosted by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) YOPP DATA PORTAL The YOPP Data Portal at yopp.met.no harvests data sets generated as part of the Year of Polar Prediction from various data archives making them visible through the portal. POLARPREDICTION MAILING LIST Our PolarPrediction Mailing List (polarprediction@climate-cryosphere.org) is a mailing list for anyone interested in polar weather and climate predictability and prediction. The list was maintained by CliC and PPP but is now closed. Information on the PolarPrediction mailing list and on the other mailing lists that we host can be found here.
