Animal Arithmetic (AA) is an end-times story in the form of manga, animation and
Jazz-Hop. Animal Arithmetic’s creator and Queens, NY native, Kenya “KDFoxx”
Danino is an illustrator, writer, and former mentee of acclaimed storytellers
Peter De Seve, Terryl Whitlatch, Thomas Astruc, and Hiroyuki Asada. When the
time came to produce the soundtrack for AA, KD teamed up with veteran Maryland
native, MC/Producer, and 2x Hollywood Music in Media nominee, Substantial. The
result is a soulful, mostly jazz and funk-infused Hip-Hop instrumental
soundscape featuring live instrumentation by Jonathan Smalls, Malcolm Jackson,
Marukabis, Marcus D, and Mason Lieberman. It also features vocal guest
appearances from EyeQ, MLLN, and of course Substantial along with voice-over
actors Ashley Christen, Binks, Daniel Acosta, Farah Naz Rishi, Hunter Scott,
Noell Webber, and Rachelle Etienne-Robinson.

Maryland-born MC, producer, artist, and educator Substantial teams up with KD
Foxx for one of the best collaborations you’ll hear this year. Speaking about
the new release, Substantial shares, “Your Greatest Weapon is about
self-empowerment and realizing that the most powerful weapon that we have is our
voice.” 'YGW's' production is a chill midtempo groove, filled with smooth bass,
rhythm guitar, chopped drum, and clarinet samples, and expertly-played
vibraphone courtesy of Malcolm Jackson. MLLN's jazzy vocals are the icing on
this delicious Jazz-Hop cake.

Veteran Jazz Hop/Lo-Fi Hip-Hop artist, Substantial teams up with illustrator and
writer, KDFoxx to produce his latest instrumental A Hunter and His Prey,
inspired by her manga 'Animal Arithmetic'. The track features voice-over acting
by Daniel Acosta and Noell Webber over a mellow groove of chill samples, drums
chops, and live bass by Jonathan Smalls. A Hunter and his Prey is the debut
single from the album Animal Arithmetic, Vol. 1 which drops on February 4, 2022
on all digital streaming platforms along with a limited edition vinyl release.

12.18.21 - ANACAONA ROCIO MILAGRO & SUBSTANTIAL - STILLMATIC FEAT. LIZZIE BLUE

Substantial · Stillmatic ft. Lizzie Blue

Stillmatic is the 2nd piece of a three-part ‘poetic-triptych’ written by poet
Anacaona Rocio Milagro, produced by Substantial, with Lizzie Blue on the piano,
and cover art by Kenny Rivero. Titled after and honoring the 20 year anniversary
of Nas’s album Stillmatic, the poet speaks of her favorite day: when her big
brother, all the way from Washington Heights, deep in street life, stepped out
and somehow found her in the Bronx during her undisclosed religious initiation
ceremony just so they could listen to the entire Nas album together in his car
the day it dropped—this is how he loves. They "Nodded their heads until their
thorn crowns spun off… into glowing disks." The ‘poetic-triptych’s’ first piece
is titled When You Were Red and describes losing a brother to street life, to
then find him again in this piece Stillmatic, only to lose him again in the
final piece titled Delirium (coming soon). Twenty years later, and it’s still
the poet's favorite day.

ANIMAL ARITHMETIC 動物の算術: BEASTS OF BURDEN




WHERE MANGA, ANIMATION AND JAZZ-HOP MEET IN THE MIDDLE TO TELL A UNIQUE END
TIMES STORY-A CALL TO INTROSPECTION!

In 2015, NYC Manga Artist Kenya Danino (otherwise known as KDFoxx) created and
performed spoken word poetry from her Boston College thesis: Kingdom Animalia.
The collection of poems highlighted the human nature of emotions - using animal
imagery to convey the thoughts we keep in the dark for fear of being
misunderstood.  As she pursued her artistic endeavors, she connected with and
bonded over love of music, poetry and anime with the legendary MC, Substantial-
who in the past collaborated with the late Japanese producer, Nujabes. Together,
they began to construct a poetic project that merged a 90's-esque dystopian
fantasy manga with the raw energy of Hip-Hop and Jazz to tell a story with a
fresh perspective on navigating difficult times.  

Thus now in the tumultuous year of 2021, they are thrilled to kick off the
Animal Arithmetic: Beasts of Burden project; a powerful narrative about
navigating life as if the days were numbered. We are humbled and excited to
bring you an original manga and music project about the unique journeys of those
who feel deeply- and KNOW even deeper.

[EP] SUBSTANTIAL & FUNKY DL - WE MET IN TOKYO

We Met In Tokyo by Substantial & Funky DL

Jazz Rap vets and former Nujabes collaborators, Substantial and Funky DL join
forces on the new EP, 'We Met In Tokyo'. The production is handled entirely by
London's own, DL with Maryland (US) native Sub on the vocals.

The soundscapes are filled with melodic Jazz samples, warm bass grooves, and
thumping boom-bap drums. Lyrically, the content sticks to authenticity over
spectacle, delivered with water-like flows.

[BOOK] SHE SEES: BASED ON THE SONG ‘IN MY DAUGHTER’S EYES’ BY SUBSTANTIAL

“She Sees” is a father’s observation of the world through the eyes of his two
young daughters. Based on the song “In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Substantial, “She
Sees” takes readers on a father’s journey as he observes his daughters, Serenity
and Destiny, begin to make sense of the world around them and their place in it.

06.12.2021 - SUBSTANTIAL - DEDICATED & DRIVEN



Dedication and Driven (DAD) is a celebration and reflection of fatherhood
written and produced by Substantial. The official video was directed, edited,
and illustrated by Rachelle Etienne-Robinson, who just so happens to be
Substantial's wife and business partner. DAD is from his project A Soundtrack
for Fatherhood. The project is inspired by his journey as a father of two girls
and his first-ever children's book, entitled 'She Sees: Based on the song 'In My
Daughters' Eyes by Substantial'.

‘SHE SEES’)

A Soundtrack for Fatherhood (Inspired by the book 'She Sees') by Substantial

'A Soundtrack for Fatherhood' is a collection of songs, new and previously
released, by Maryland, MC, and producer, Substantial. The music is inspired both
by his experiences as a father and by his first-ever children's book, She Sees:
Based on the song In My Daughters' Eyes by Substantial.

The beats on ASFF are Substantial's signature jazzy and soulful sound including
several self-produced tracks including three all-new songs. Other production
credits include Marcus D, Allmos (fka Algorythm) ½ of the production duo The
Stuyvesants, Oddisee, and Jon Laine.

ASFF also includes guest appearances by Stephanie Gayle (fka Steph the Sapphic
Songstress), Asheru, Kokayi, Gods'Illa, Jsoul, DJ RBI, DJ AAROCK, and Fjer.
