Student Led Conferences will be happening Nov. 13-14 (Wednesday and Thursday). There are only 30 minute time slots so it is very important that students go through their portfolios first with their parents prior to talking with me at the conference. During the time that you have signed up on Wednesday or Thursday, you will first have your student show you their portfolio and then we will go over any questions you may about your student. I am looking forward to talking with each of you, so please sign up for a time when they send out the link for appointments. Native American Day As part of our 4th grade social studies curriculum, students learn about the different tribes that are native to Utah. On Tuesday Nov. 26, we will be celebrating this learning with a day filled with activities related to the Native American tribes students have learned about. There is no need to dress up, just come dressed as normal. Each teacher in fourth grade will be in charge of a different activity and we will be rotating to each classroom throughout the day. It is going to be a very memorable and fun day! What We're Learning Math - In math we are working on lots of multiplication. This this week we wrap up a unit on multidigit multiplication. Next, we will start two digit by two digit multiplication using open arrays. Although this is different from the way many of us adults learned multiplication, it is really useful to help students see why multiplying large numbers. Please continue to practice your math facts at home, we will be using them a lot in the upcoming weeks. Reading - Our newest reading unit focuses on identifying main idea and details in reading. This is an important skill to continue to develop and build on in 4th grade. Students will be able to identify the main idea of different sections of a passage and support their main idea with details from the passage. They have also been working on making connections to what they read by asking questions and making inferences. Writing - This first part of the year we have been really focusing on developing student writing from 3rd grade. Students have also been developing their writing through the use of the writing process which takes from brainstorming, drafting, editing, revising, peer conferences and publishing their work using their iPads. By the end of the month we are going to start our first writing essential skill on informational writing. Science - Students are exploring what happens with energy and energy transfer. This unit is full of fun experiments to investigate energy phenomena like playing marbles and bowling to investigate collisions as well as building rollercoasters to investigate potential and kinetic energy. Later on we will be looking at different forms of energy and different machines that change energy from one form to another.
