The alien missionaries announced their arrival by writing their scripture into the skies over every major city. The sunset colored letters reportedly left a scent like fresh rain. Millions dropped to their knees and converted to a faith they could not read, unaware that it wasn’t a message of salvation but of consecration. First, the priests built churches and then the priests built slaughterhouses. Who or what are they? Do we all feel the need to document ourselves because we are unsure of our own place in the world; that we have the undying urge to leave a mark on this world, to say “I was there, I existed?” Or are we just narcissist? Are we our own mirrors, reflecting our own personal desires? Could fame exist without an audience? Why do we desire an audience? Is it because we fail to validate ourselves and our own actions? Do we perform for the audience or does the audience make us perform for them? Who is dictating who? What do we see in these people? What purpose do they serve? Why do we desire less in a time when we need more? Where are our heroes? Why are we worshiping false idols in times of crisis? Because we don’t want to see Rome burn? If the audience changes the performer will too. Reject false idols or reflect upon them. You can’t have it both ways. Furthermore, no, I don’t believe in right or wrong. There are designated positions for our culture, just as there were for all generations prior - that is it. Our ideas of morality are based through the narrow scope of personal reality. Objective anything is bad. If you need some proof of that just turn on your tv or a radio or something. I believe in personal distaste, persuasion, and guilt. What is right to me is probably not right for you. My ideals are based on my experiences, as are yours, so on and so forth. The idea that there is some objective morality that hangs over all of us is absurd. Live your life and do what is good for you. It is probably for the best in the long run and even if it’s not, who cares? It’s better to know than only wish you did. It wasn’t that long ago that slavery was well within American moral standards. It wasn’t that long ago that adults raped kids guilt-free or killed one another over plots of land. I’m glad that we’ve had enough social progression to finally view these things as abhorrent, but I am also not naive enough to believe we are anything other than animals. What you believe to be true, is it true? Or do you believe that it’s true because you were taught that it’s true and never looked any further? If you seek truth, be prepared to see darkness as well as light. If you seek to know yourself, be prepared to hold the light when you see your darkness.
