ENCOURAGING MALE PATIENTS TO PRIORITIZE COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING: STRATEGIES
FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

Wednesday, June 12, 2024

During National Men’s Health Month, talk to your male patients about colorectal
cancer screening. Colorectal cancer is a significant health concern for men, yet
some men may avoid screening due to fear of discomfort and/or lack of awareness.
As a provider, you can be an advocate for men's health by talking to your
patients about the importance of screening and how it is essential to health and
well-being.

Educate and Inform

Offer your patients direct and clear information about colorectal cancer,
including:

 * Early detection – Starting screening at age 45 for individuals with average
risk or possibly before age 45 for individuals with high risk
 * Methods of screening – Fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) versus colonoscopy
 * Benefits of screening
 * Common fears and misconceptions about screening

You have the influence to break down barriers and stigma by talking about
colorectal screening and answering  any questions during health care visits.

Remember the Individual

Risk for colorectal cancer is specific to each individual man. Being familiar
with your patients’ histories and risk factors can help you tailor your
recommendations to individuals.

Empower Your Patients

Involving your patients in decision-making processes helps them actively
participate in their health care. By presenting screening options, including
explaining benefits and potential risks in a clear manner, you allow your
patients to make informed choices aligned with their values and preferences. You
can find resources to help support these discussions at CDC.gov, Health.gov and
Health.mil.

By discussing colorectal cancer with your male patients, you can help them get
used to the idea of screening and understand its importance to their health.
