VIRTUAL WINTER SPEAKER SERIES: A NEW AMERICAN GLOBE: JAMES WILSON OF VERMONT
WITH AMANDA KAY GUSTIN

In 1810, James Wilson, a farmer from Bradford, made something extraordinary: the
first American-made globes for sale in history. With little formal schooling and
no real scientific background, he had made an object of astonishing detail and
incredible beauty. His globes made their way into classrooms and homes across
America for the next fifty years, a less expensive alternative to imported
English globes and an education phenomenon.

Next Thursday (March 23rd), join us for a new virtual roundtable, Community
Engagement Strategies. Engaging directly with our communities in our work has
become an increasingly important strategy for increasing impact, gaining
support, and ensuring relevancy. The challenge is that engagement can sometimes
be daunting and difficult. Where do you begin? how to prioritize who you work
with and how? Bring your questions and your community engagement experiences to
this open discussion. Details via the link in our bio! #VermontHistory #Vermont

Here's an interesting, Ireland-related item we have in our collection for St.
Patrick's day: it's a pipe that was owned by English author Rudyard Kipling,
featuring a number of Irish symbols, like shamrocks, a harp, and a dog. Kipling
and his family lived in Vermont near Brattleboro and Dummerston in the 1890s,
where he wrote The Jungle Book. He was sympathetic to Ireland's Unionist
movement and was against the Home Rule legislation that would have allowed it to
govern itself. #vermonthistory #vermont #history #museumcollection

Today is St. Patrick's Day, and it's a good time to learn about some of
Vermont's connections to Ireland! The Fenian Brotherhood was a movement in the
United States that sought to establish an Irish Republic in the 19th century. It
was fueled by Irish immigrants who'd fled the country, and in the post-American
Civil War years, launched a series of raids into Canada from the US (including
Vermont), to try and pressure the British into leaving Ireland. Here are a
couple of items from that time: the first is a small, tattered Fenian flag from
sometime between 1875 and 1895. The other two items are powder horns that were
found in Franklin by Lucian Wilson, after the Fenians passed through in 1866.
