Exercise
There’s no shortage of trust exercises for teams at work, but here’s a fun one.
First, find an open space and gather some items that can be used to create
simple obstacles (this could be a rope someone needs to step over, an assortment
of plastic cups they could navigate without touching, or furniture they need to
maneuver around). Next, divide your team into pairs and ask one person in each
group to put on a blindfold. Finally, taking turns, have the seeing member of
the pair talk the blindfolded member through the obstacle course. This exercise
strengthens communication skills and builds trust.

Taking the Leap
Where does courage come from? According to author and inspirational speaker
Simon Sinek, it comes from trust. Why? Well, consider his analogy of a skydiver.
Jumping out of a plane takes courage, sure. But more than that, it requires
trust in your parachute.

In the workplace and beyond, trustworthiness is the safety net that allows us to
take risks and the glue that holds teams and organizations together. Building,
reciprocating, and maintaining trust is essential for success.

Watch: In this video, Sinek sits down to discuss the importance of trust and how
it can help us achieve big things.

Happy people tend to have higher levels of trust. Why? Because of increased
oxytocin levels. Studies have found that oxytocin reduces fear, increases
empathy, and encourages people to help out more in a group.

Take Action: Trust is a bit like a bank account. You can’t keep making
withdrawals unless you make deposits, too. So, remember, if you’re asking others
to trust you, you also need to open yourself up to trusting them in return.
