CHARLES RICK JOHNSTON, CHAIR OF BUSINESS AT OECD (BIAC) March 15, 2024 Japanese On March 15, commencing at 5 pm for approximately 20 minutes, Parliamentary Vice-Minister HOSAKA Yasushi received a courtesy call by Mr. Charles Rick Johnston, Chair of Business at OECD (BIAC). The overview of the courtesy call is as follows. 1. At the outset, Parliamentary Vice-Minister Hosaka stated Japan’s position, as Chair of this year’s OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM), to highlight OECD’s outreach to Southeast Asia, free trade and investment, and digitalization including generative AI as major agenda items. He further elaborated Japan’s view that it will continue to lead the international discussion to maintain and expand rules-based free and fair economic order, leveraging on OECD’s strength in terms of its richness of data and analytical capabilities. 2. Mr. Johnston expressed gratitude to Japan for its efforts to organize the Consultation meeting with BIAC and TUAC held on 14 March, which led to useful discussions for the MCM in May and expressed his desire to deliver BIAC’s views at this year’s MCM, representing companies around the world. 3. Both sides agreed to deepen collaboration, noting that having contributions from the business sector is crucial for the success of the MCM. (Reference) The Consultation meeting with BIAC and TUAC The Consultation meetings with Business at OECD (BIAC) and the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC) are organized prior to the OECD Ministerial Council Meeting by the Chair of the MCM and the OECD Secretariat, as a forum for business and labour sectors to express their views and contribute to the discussions the MCM.
