Who among us has not mused wistfully on how convenient it would be to replace our current eyes with functional sets, improve hearing, or simply acquire the ability to set people on fire just by thinking about it? While modern technology does offer short-cuts for self-modification—glasses, hearing aids, and microwave lasers tuned to the resonant frequency of water—these often fall short in one aspect or another. SFF authors can imagine far more potent methods to facilitate self-directed modification—in fact, as these five works show, they have! There are cozy mysteries, domestic fantasies, stories where nothing bad happens, books that focus above all on kindness and caring—the kind of tales we turn to and share whenever we need to feel better about the world. Well, I’d like to acknowledge another type of story that belongs in this category: Competence porn. I find that competence porn can be really, really comforting (and I’d welcome more of it, so if you have any recommendations, please mention them in the comments!). If you know what I’m talking about, you probably don’t require much convincing. If you don’t, I’ll break it down for you: What the hell is competence porn? Not only does the studio hope the initial live-action film will be the first of a franchise, but they’ve also got Ted Melfi on board to adapt, direct, and produce the movie. It’s not uncommon for things to get optioned but never get made (Old Man’s War, in fact, had been previously optioned by Paramount and Syfy without making it to the production stage), but it sounds like the Netflix movie adaptation is still moving forward. But snow and ice can also be dangerous and menacing, and in the hands of horror authors, cold weather can create an atmosphere of real terror. To send a truly memorable shiver up your spine, all that’s needed are some not-so-friendly creatures lurking among the snowdrifts… [Read more] * book recommendations CAN’T MISS INDIE PRESS SPECULATIVE FICTION FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY 2024 Tobias Carroll Fri Jan 5, 2024 10:00am Post a comment 2 Favorites [+] Somehow Palpatine returned, only in this scenario the role of “Palpatine returned” will be played by “it’s 2024.” I’m as surprised as you are; I still have to remind myself to write “2023” on my checks, which suggests that I’m likely to fall two years off on at least one piece of correspondence. I wish I could say that this was some sort of uncanny slippage through time, like in a Steve Erickson novel; it’s not. On the plus side, at least the first two months of 2024 have some promising-looking books due out from indie presses. PARKER DELIVERS A STRONG SEQUEL WITH SAEVUS CORAX CAPTURES THE CASTLE Matthew Keeley Thu Jan 4, 2024 3:00pm Post a comment 1 Favorite [+] Saevus Corax is the sort of man who doesn’t like to be the center of attention, because being the center of attention invariably means that someone is trying to kill him. He seeks no glory in the wars that constantly pop up across his benighted continent; he waits until the battles are done, then he and his salvage crew tidy up the field: burning or burying bodies, retrieving uniforms and weapons, removing rings from fingers and earrings from ears, prying shoes from horses and arrows from people. Any wounded found in the wreckage are nursed back to health; needless to say, Saevus, who does not run a charity, charges their government for this service. Unfortunately for Saevus Corax, he is the protagonist of a K.J. Parker trilogy, and so he never can labor in his desired obscurity. [Some spoilers ahead for the first book in the series.] [Read more] * trailers SHE IS CONANN TRAILER GIVES US THE QUEER EPIC FANTASY YOU’RE LOOKING FOR, MAYBE Vanessa Armstrong Thu Jan 4, 2024 2:53pm 2 Favorites [+] A queer, gender-flipped take on Conan The Barbarian from French filmmaker Bertrand Mandico is heading to the United States, and the trailer gives us a glimpse of what the film entails. Pine over a lovely dead guy in a graveyard, obviously. For most young goths, such pining is the end of the romantic line: dead guys gonna stay dead. But in Lisa Frankenstein, the sweet, decayed corpse gets reanimated (via lightning and/or a tanning bed), and young Lisa (Kathryn Newton) gets her heart’s desire. Then it’s time to do some murder, obviously. I was home in December, writing, and over the holidays I had friends to stay in a Covid-cautious bubble that let me have fun and see people in a relatively safe way, though my son and other friends got sick—which meant that the present-opening part of Christmas got postponed several days after the traditional 25th. Stay safe out there. I finished thirteen books in December, some of them great. Here we are in another bright and shiny new year, my Cosmere Chickens! And I sincerely hope that this one treats you better than the one before. (If you had a good year, I hope that this one’s even better. And if it was a bad one, well… same wish.) You may remember that we left off on a bit of a sad place in our reread two weeks ago. Prince Raoden’s still “dead” and stuck in Elantris, and the Aons are still stubbornly refusing to work for him. Princess Sarene’s been “cured” of her Shaod, but that means that she’s been separated from “Spirit” ::pout:: and thrust back into the politically fraught turmoil of Kaye, where Telrii has taken over the throne but refused to convert to Shu-Dereth (as he promised Hrathen he would). Things aren’t quite at a boil, but they’re getting close. So won’t you join us as we light a candle and make our way down the streets of Elantris, on our way to meet Raoden in a certain dimly lit, dusty library… [Read more] SERIES: ELANTRIS REREAD * news SNEAK PEEK OF LA BREA’S FINAL SEASON REVEALS DINOSAURS WRECKING THE AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM, LIKE DINOSAURS DO Vanessa Armstrong Wed Jan 3, 2024 4:11pm Favorite This NBC’s La Brea is about to have its third and final season. If you haven’t watched the series yet, here’s the overarching premise: a bunch of folks in Los Angeles fall into a huge sinkhole after an earthquake and find themselves… in another time.
