Campbell Arnotts, while walking away from a deal with Coles would lock it out of
almost half the market, it seems it had sufficient confidence in customer

limitations in grocery outlets apply, the brand strength of Tim Tams means that
customers may choose to follow the product to other grocers. While customers may
be happy to substitute brands of shampoo, pasta, orīroccoli, they may be more
likely to make an extra trip to Woolworths (or another store) to ensure a stock
of Tim Tams in the cupboard. Given that Coles and Woolworths represent almost 80
percent of that market, the number of options for where to sell a high volume of
product are relatively limited.įor a product such as Tim Tams, the picture is
different. That is, what will we do if we can’t come to an agreement with the
party we are negotiating with?įor the average supplier, failure to agree to a
supply contract with Coles will shut it out of a significant chunk of the
Australian grocery market. Negotiation 101 teaches us that we need to know our
BATNA, or the Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement. So why did Campbell
Arnott’s succeed where other suppliers had failed?Ĭampbell Arnott’s had stronger
alternatives To Campbell Arnott’s increased price on 44 products. After four
months of negotiations, Coles caved in, agreeing Tim Tams’ maker,
Campbell Arnott’s, was seeking a price increase of up to 10 percent across 54
products.Ĭoles initially refused the increase on the basis that customers
didn’t want to pay more. It was interesting then, that in the great Tim Tam
scandal of 2015, we saw a case of Coles being pushed around by one of its
suppliers. Both Coles and Woolworths have come under fire for
their unconscionable conduct with suppliers.Ĭoles even received a $10 million
fine in December 2014 for demanding “payments from suppliers to which it was not
entitled, by threatening harm to the suppliers that did not comply with the
demand”. Over the past few years, there has been increasing criticism of our two
major supermarket chains for the way they negotiate with suppliers.

Retailers can learn some valuable lessons in negotiation from Coles’ Tim Tams
price rise stand off.Īs a chocolate lover, when I saw an article in the
Financial Review last year with the words ‘Tim Tams’ in the headline, I knew I
had to read it. It turns out that this article led me down a very interesting

power is exemplified by the languid, Pavement-influenced Sweet Shine, disrupted
by Gordon’s sudden shift to throat-shredding howl midway through. Sweet Shine
(1994)Īpparently recorded over the master tape of 1987’s Sister, Experimental
Jet Set, Trash and No Star was a defiantly subdued, refusenik gesture in the
wake of the post-Nirvana alt-rock gold rush. As Anti-Orgasm grippingly proves –
spiky, clashing guitars heaving, monotonal riff beautiful, off-beam coda – it
couldn’t have been the work of anyone else. Sonic Youth’s final album, The
Eternal, might have been the most straightforward they ever released, but then
again, that’s a relative term. It starts out like jerky post-punk funk, then
suddenly transforms: an unsettling Kim Gordon monologue over brooding, tense,
detuned guitar noise. Thrillingly, you can almost hear the band finding
themselves as Shaking Hell plays.

Sonic Youth’s first full album, Confusion Is Sex, was an abrasive leap forward
from their awkward, half-formed debut EP.

his friends say they have grown tired of the voice. Jerry agonizes and decides
he prefers the voice. She says they can only get back together if he agrees to
never do the voice again. Behind her back, Jerry jokes that her stomach has a
voice, which he lampoons by saying "Helloooo!" Jerry tells Claire about "the
voice." Offended, she leaves him. When George turns down his boss's request that
he quit, he tries to drive George out by moving him into a derelict office,
spiking his food, and even barricading his office door, but George continues to
show up to work each day. George's employer, Play Now, wants to get rid of him
after finding out he isn't really disabled, but cannot fire him because he has a
one-year contract. Meanwhile, a chance encounter with David Puddy leads to
Elaine renewing their relationship, George sticks with a job where his
co-workers all hate him because he has a one-year contract with the company, and
Kramer hires an intern and works with him on creating an oil bladder system. The
episode's title refers to a joke Jerry and his friends share about his
girlfriend's stomach having a voice, which ends up coming between Jerry and his
girlfriend.
