Here are key findings from UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s latest Global Trade Update: ✅ This 3.3% annual growth has been largely driven by a 7% rise in trade in services, which has contributed $500 billion to the overall expansion. In contrast, trade in goods has grown at a slower pace of 2% this year, remaining below its peak in 2022. ✅ Both sectors experienced an increase in trade values during the third quarter, with this momentum expected to continue into the year’s final quarter. ✅ In the third quarter of 2024, developed economies led global trade growth, supported by stable demand and improving business conditions. Imports for this group grew 3% for the quarter, while exports increased 2%. ✅ By contrast, developing regions struggled during the same period. Imports fell 1% for the quarter, while rose by just 1%. ✅ Trade between developing countries, known as South-South trade, dropped 1% for the quarter, reversing earlier trends. However, developing countries’ trade remained positive on an annual basis, growing by about 3%. Their external interest payments surged in 2023. Low- and lower-middle-income economies – also referred to as frontier-market economies – saw a 42% increase and other developing economies faced a 112% spike. Between 2010 and 2023, frontier-market economies’ external interest costs rose by an average of 15.5% annually – double the rate of other groups. Moreover, in 2023, a record 54 developing nations dedicated a minimum of 10% of government funds to debt interest payments. In 2024, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), International Trade Centre, International Labour Organization and World Trade Organization joined forces to establish the Technical Working Group on Trade and Disability Inclusion. On 3 December, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the group — together with Finland, South Africa and UN Women — hosted a high-level meeting to spotlight groundbreaking inclusive trade initiatives. The event served as a powerful call to action, urging nations to embed disability inclusion into trade policies to drive meaningful and measurable change. That same year, global exports of digitally deliverable services totaled $4.5 trillion. Such services can be delivered remotely over computer networks. Some examples include information technology consulting, creative industries, telecommunications and financial services. While digital technologies have the potential to transform global services trade, their benefits remain unevenly distributed. UNCTAD data show that while digitally deliverable services account for 56% of services exports worldwide, that share is just 20% in least developed countries (LDCs). Despite a 43% increase between 2015 and 2023 in value terms, LDCs’ share of global digitally deliverable services exports steadily fell from 0.24% to 0.19%. Many developing economies have historically relied on a few commodities, such as oil, copper, cacao, and wheat, which has hindered their growth. A country is classified as “dependent” when commodities make up more than 60% of its total merchandise exports. From 1998 to 2021, the number of commodity-dependent countries increased from 92 to 101. In 2021, about 85% of the world's least developed countries were commodity-dependent, compared to only 12% of advanced economies. Overreliance on commodities makes countries vulnerable to price volatility and global shocks, such as drops in oil prices or the impacts of climate change. 🌍 Join global policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators in Geneva or online on 9–10 December for UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)'s Global Commodities Forum 2024. 🔗 Register now: https://ow.ly/uU3r50UgxUo 🔗 Find out more: https://ow.ly/a6UB50UgxUk * 88 Like Comment Share * UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 185,948 followers 23h * Report this post ▶️ Powering trade: Why renewable energy needs a push from positive policies. While this shift brings promise, it also carries risks for global inequalities. Developing countries account for less than 30% of global services export revenues. The Trade and Development Report 2024 warns that without bold action, the gap between rich and poor nations will continue to grow, worsening global inequalities, increasing social unrest, and making it harder to combat climate change.
