This is a very timely book! As organizations like mine navigate the new normal
of hybrid work, the common refrain I hear from leaders is how will we maintain
our culture if employees are not in the office? The subtitle of this book is
"design a culture that will help you thrive in the hybrid workplace." In other
words, it is time organizations take a fresh look at their culture. The author's
premise is you don't need an office to build culture and I agree with this
whole-heartedly. The structure of this book makes it highly readable and
engaging and is loaded with practical tools and tips. At the end of each chapter
is a helpful recap. He also provides facilitation tips for guiding discussions
on co-creating culture with employees. The author also redefines culture into
three important elements - core culture (purpose, values), emotional culture
(psychological safety, belonging), and functional culture (norms,
decision-making, roles). It is recommended that you read the book in sequence
and there are QR codes throughout to download the tools. Creating a strong
workplace culture is not office dependent (or where people work). I highly
recommend this book for all organizational leaders, HR professionals, and others
interested in co-creating a new culture in their organization that will support
and sustain our new way of working.

In the world before the pandemic, no matter how deliberate organizations were
about their culture, some of it developed spontaneously and organically, merely
by the virtue of teams spending 40 hours a week next to each other in the
office. And then suddenly, overnight, this “togetherness” ceased to exist. One
of the reasons why some companies are clamoring for return to the offices is
that they have not yet found the viable replacement for that sense of
connectedness. Gustavo’s book is a timely blueprint for restoring and enhancing
team cultures in the new age of permanent hybrid work. Well sourced and though
through, methodically organized and clearly articulated, it’s a step-by-step
guide to help you identify and fill the gaps created by physical distance and
turn your teams once again into the well-adjusted, humming and happy engines of
productivity. My personal favorite quote: “The office is the new off-site”.

organizational transitions

I have participated in a couple of training with Gustavo Razzetti and found them
always insightful, inspiring and very practical, boiling down complex issues to
essential questions, frameworks and tools to be able to move around and forward,
without offering any kind of “blessed truth”, but instead offering the
possibility and some maps to explore different perspectives and make a
collective sense out of the experience. I have found all this also in “Remote
Not Distant”: it is a very inspiring and practical manual to navigate the
transition we all are experiencing in the organizational landscape and any
working environment, where words like “remote” and “hybrid” have become part of
the daily vocabulary of most of us. Reflections in the book are supported by
broad research and references, as well as the extensive experience Gustavo has
gained during years of immersion into the corporate environment as a
facilitator. At the end of any chapter there are very useful briefs to support
those wanting to immediately experiment in practice what is proposed.
This book is recommended to anyone truly wanting to explore, expand and enjoy
the transforming working experience.

Most organizations are struggling with the new reality of work. They are missing
the bigger picture, focusing on tactical issues instead of resetting their
culture to thrive in the hybrid workplace.
I enjoyed Remote Not Distant because it provides a framework, inviting each
company to build its own roadmap. Rather than providing a silver bullet, the
book is packed with insights, examples, activities, and tools to choose from.
It's a how-to manual and rich in inspiration and tips.
It's a book that leaders should keep close to them and consult on a regular
basis.
