ASSUMING ALL ELSE IS EQUAL, THE TWO WEEKS OFF AND EVERY SECOND FRIDAY BEING IN
ADDITION TO NORMAL HOLIDAYS, BENEFITS ETC. I'D TAKE B IN A HEARTBEAT, EVEN
ACCOUNTING FOR COMMUTE IT'S A SHORTER AVERAGE WORK WEEK AND WORKS OUT TO ALMOST
$10 MORE PER HOUR.

ALL THAT EXTRA TIME OFF IS GOING TO DO WAY MORE FOR MY WORK-LIFE BALANCE THEN
WORKING FROM HOME WOULD.

Hmm I was a little curious so I did the math and I came up with about $6 per
hour difference, before taxes

But even still, I’d take Option 2

POSSIBLY #1. RELOCATE TO A LOWER COST OF LIVING STATE/AREA. REMOVE UNNECESSARY
COMMUTE EXPENSES. A PENNY SAVED IS A PENNY EARNED.

OR NEITHER. YOU SHOULD FIND A HIGHER SALARY JOB. DON'T DEPRESS WAGES FOR OUR
INDUSTRY BY TAKING A $110K JOB.

How much should we ask for? I know it differs based on skill and knowledge but,
generally speaking. I'm making around 90k currently, two years of previous
experience

NEITHER, THOSE ARE ROOKIE COMPS AND BENEFITS. ANY DECENT COMPANY HIRING
ENGINEERS SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH PTO AND FLEXIBILITY TO COVER THE HOLIDAYS WHETHER
IT'S REMOTE OR NOT. AND $10K ISN'T ENOUGH INCENTIVE TO LOSE THE CONVENIENCE OF
BALANCING HOME LIFE

#1 all day.

Working remotely earns you time and flexibility worth way more than 10k per
year.

Pick up a side gig software contract and earn the extra 10k if you need it.

#1. If you're in-office, you
- lose flexibility in daily routines
- lose at least 30 minutes of every work day purely for travel overhead
- lose money with transportation costs
- lose time with family/partner at home

1. I work from home now and would never give it up. I get more done around the
house. I don't have to buy work clothes. I don't have to get ready before work.
I wouldn't get as much done on that alternating Friday as I do during lunch at
home. I'm also never going to buy lunch if I'm home, yet I would in the office.
Add in the commute time and that just makes it worse. Remote work is worth at
least $20k per year in time and spending reductions. I also get more done before
9 at home than a day in

It depends on your goals. Some people are fine working for someone else, in
which case #2 works. If you want the freedom to work but also save more, invest
more and build something that you can retire early on and enjoy life, it's a lot
easier to accomplish doing #1.

: Hey everyone! :) I had a quick question : As a potential first time home
buyer, the market today in NYC is impossible to buy given the rising mortgage
interest rates & inflated/overvalued home prices . My job is currently remote,
live in Queens & not really sure when we have to go back into the office
(fi-di). I’ve made the decision to stay put & rent until the market corrects
itself . Where can I buy a house/condo that is easy to commute to Manhattan, has
access to amenities and affordable?

What’s the percentage comp increase I should expect leaving Big 4 Tech
Consulting for a competitor? I’m not particularly happy where I am, so I may as
well make a move and get a quick increase - I’m just not sure what’s reasonable
in this market. 25-30% is what I’m thinking.

I gotta say, a lot of the posts here aren't that cringe. I expected more making
fun of employers who say stuff like "All these job seekers are lazy. It's so
hard to find good employees." or the posts about how to be successful. Instead,
a lot of you all are just making fun of people who are just trying their best
and that seems kind of cruel.

I'll make it simple. I've been doing daily streams of myself going through

If that interests you and you want to join me in this journey, I am about to

Watch me make mistakes, hear me struggle and develop and optimized algorithm.

Happy coding!

LeetCode has become the de facto platform for preparing for the software

How do you feel about your job? Either your current position right now or your
general role as a SWE - do you genuinely enjoy it and have a passion for it,
tolerate it and collect the paycheck, or hate it? Does the industry you’re in
have an impact on your answer - e.g. FAANG vs. fintech vs. ed tech? Personally
after switching companies I’ve gone from hating to tolerance, but I feel like
I’m never going to be excited about what I’m doing.

Hello Fish,

are there any software engineers who work at Cisco that can shed some light on
what it's like working there as an engineer?

Cisco is at the top of my list because of their reputation, the good reviews
from employees, and for their efforts in social good.

I currently work as a database admin at a homeless youth shelter in LA, and
Cisco is our most generous donor. I'm finishing up my bootcamp and would love to
hear if Cisco is a good place for me to try joining.

Thanks

For people who love reading technical books on software architecture, design,
programming languages and frameworks, etc - what do you read your books on,
paper or screen? I find ebooks convenient for most of the things as it is easier
to search for notes and annotations. On the other hand, paper books are a great
companion by the desk for a quick reference.
