By publishing your copyright with Seminal's public register, you are publicizing your ownership, which is the first step in protecting, licensing and selling the copyrights to your artwork. HOW LONG DOES COPYRIGHT LAST? Copyright lasts for the lifetime of the creator, plus 70 years. When copyright expires, the material becomes part of the 'public domain', and is free for anyone to use, for any purpose. Before such time, copyright gives you the right to make and sell copies of the material, and with your consent the copyright ownership and exclusive rights can be sold and transferred. WHY WOULD I SELL THE COPYRIGHT TO AN ARTWORK? Essentially for the same reason you would sell the physical artwork, to generate income. In many cases, the copyright to an artwork can be more valuable than the physical artwork, allowing the artist or copyright holder to generate substantial income from the creative material. WHY WOULD SOMEONE BUY THE COPYRIGHT TO MY ARTWORK? When an artist sells physical artwork, the copyrights in the artwork do not transfer to the purchaser. Therefore, the purchaser of the physical artwork may want to also acquire the copyright to the artwork. Alternatively, a third party may want to buy the copyright for the exclusive rights it provides such as including the right to copy the work, distribute the work, adapt the work, publicly perform the work, and publicly display the work.
