On 24th of May 2013, a Buddhist monk named Bohowatte Indararatna set himself on
fire in Kandy, outside the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It is a Buddhist
temple located in the royal palace complex, an important place both from a
cultural and religious perspective. A tooth of Buddha is kept there. Kandy is
located around 70 km (or 45 miles) north-east of Colombo, the capital of Sri
Lanka.

⠀REASONS

The exact age of Bohowatte Indararatna wasn't given, but the news mentioned a
nameless (back then) victim 'believed to be' around 30 yo. He was protesting
against the halal slaughter of cattle and the alleged conversion of Buddhists by
the country's minority faiths. In Sri Lanka, around 70% of the population is
Buddhist, and 10% is Muslim. The rest are Hindus and Christians. Most of the Sri
Lankan people don't mind having a neighbour of a minority faith - 75% wouldn't
mind living next to a Muslim family, and all the other percentages are higher.
However, a half of the population (no matter the faith) doesn't believe that
Islam is compatible with the country's values.

The video you've seen was recorded by a journalist. This was a topic of the
investigation, as that means someone was informed that there's a person going to
commit suicide. At least one was informed, but it was said that journalists
documented Indararatna's self-immolation.

⠀AFTERMATH

Indararatna was transported to the local hospital, and then - to the hospital
complex in Colombo. He died there in intensive care on the following day.

There were more photos that were not saved properly online. E.g., this one is

Protests started due to the authorities refusing a state burial. The government
also criticized the media outlets showing the video. The BBC's correspondent in
Sri Lanka, Charles Haviland, says some viewers didn't approve the extensive
coverage that the incident received from a hardline Buddhist TV channel,
Swarnavahini.

> the incident as an act of self-sacrifice for the good of the country, he adds.

Context: Sinhalese people are the biggest ethnic group, making up roughly 75% of
Sri Lanka's population. Around 90% of them are Buddhist, and some tie ethnicity,
country and religion together, so I guess the ultra-nationalism here is about
being 'true' Sri Lankan citizen.

On 26th of May 2013, the other monks protested over the transfer of the body of
the deceased monk. It was said there were dozens of monks from the same group,
Voice of Sinhala, and their supporters. The body was at a funeral parlour in
Borella, but was transferred to Ratnapura for final rites. Borella is a suburb
of Colombo, and Ratnapura is another city, around 60 km (or 37 mil) to the
south-east from Colombo. The monks protested in Borella and threatened to set
themselves on fire in front of the official residence of Defence Secretary
Gotabaya Rajapaksa. They moved towards Temple Trees, and the police had to close
the road between Galle Face and the Colpetty junction.

That's roughly this area of Colombo, as marked below. Temple Trees is the
official residence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Take a look at the nice

"A 77-year-old man shot dead two environmental protesters on Wednesday in an
apparent outburst of rage over a roadblock in Panama.

The gunman was named in local media as Kenneth Franklin Darlington Salas. If he
is convicted, Mr Salas could be sentenced to house arrest rather than being sent
to jail because of his age.

The protesters, who were opposed to a controversial mining contract, had blocked
the Pan-American Highway in Chame, 51 miles from the capital Panama City.

Footage posted on social media showed the motorist walking from his car,
demanding the protesters get out of the road.

Initially, Mr Salas removed tyres which were obstructing the road. The
protesters, according to witnesses, shouted at the man: “Are you going to kill
someone?”

The gunman replied: “You want to be the first?”

He opened fire, first shooting a protester holding a flag and then a second man
who went to confront him, before walking off and removing tree trunks that had
been blocking the road. He was then arrested.

Local media identified the victims as Abdiel Diaz, a teacher and union activist,
and Ivan Mendoza.

The site, in the jungle to the west of the capital, is considered
environmentally sensitive.

In an effort to calm tempers, congress last week passed a law that imposes a
moratorium on new metal mining contracts and left it up to the Supreme Court to
decide on whether to allow the contract with First Quantum Minerals.

Environmentalists have welcomed this decision by lawmakers, saying indeed it is
the court that should rule on whether the contract violates the constitution.

But a powerful construction union called Suntracs, teachers unions and other
organisations want the contract to be annulled through a law passed by Congress,
so they are continuing their protests.

Panama-America said Mr Salas was born in Colon and had been a teacher at several
universities.

Mr Salas was previously arrested in 2005 after weapons – including an AK-47 and
M-16 - were found in his flat. He was later acquitted after a court accepted his
plea that they were merely part of a collection.

He was employed as a spokesman for Marc Harris, a Panamanian accountant who was
jailed for 17 years in 2004 after being convicted of money laundering and tax
evasion."

around with two of his companions and the three of them fired about 30 bullets
at the prisoners in the pit, chanting phrases like, “Bitch snipers!” and, “God
is great!”

When the shooting stopped (1:52), one of them pointed out that one of the

Two people taking part in an anti-government protest in Panama were shot dead on
Tuesday by an unknown assailant, authorities said, aggravating social tension
