The Hemoglobinopathy Reference Laboratory at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital
Oakland serves as a national resource to aid in the diagnosis of clinically
relevant hemoglobinopathies. The laboratory is CLIA and CAP certified and
functions as a clinical and diagnostic support laboratory for the Comprehensive
Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Centers, the California State Newborn Screening
(NBS) Hemoglobinopathy Follow-up Program, the National Marrow Donor Program
(NMDP) several other cord blood banks, as well as clinical referrals from health
care providers.

Established in 1973, the laboratory has been a vital component of California’s
newborn screening follow-up program, providing confirmatory testing on all
newborns with presumptive sickle cell disease, beta thalassemia or HbH disease.
The laboratory also assists state NBS programs across the country in the
evaluation of clinically relevant hemoglobin variants.

Test results are reported with a clinical interpretation and recommendations
within two weeks of sample collection. Staff hematologists are available for
clinical consultation with providers.
