POPULAR CENTRAL COAST BEACH CLOSES AFTER DOZENS OF SEA LIONS APPEAR

By Madilynne Medina, News ReporterAug 19, 2024

Sea lions on a Monterey beach.

City of Monterey

A popular Central Coast beach for divers and tourists closed Monday after a
large crowd of sea lions appeared over the weekend.

Monterey city officials temporarily closed San Carlos Beach, the city announced
on Facebook. A photo on the post shows dozens of sea lions lying together on the
sand.

Anyone visiting the coastline is advised to stay at least 50 yards from the sea
lions, the city said, as the animals are one of several marine mammal species
protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act. People can face a fine or jail
time if they harass, feed, capture or kill the animals.

The city will post again when the beach reopens, it said on Facebook.
