Under normal circumstances, Jack Armstrong would be happier to meet you at an
Irish pub over a pint of Guinness. It would be the same if he met you on the
street or at the arena before he got to work as a Raptors analyst: “I’m a people
person.”

This is not a really great time to be meeting new people, though, and as a new
season approaches, Armstrong is wading into unfamiliar territory. He has joined
Memmo, a website designed to connect regular people directly with the
celebrities they follow.

For a fee, you can send a request to Armstrong — or to any of the growing
platoon of Canadian names signed onto the site — and receive a personalized
video message in return. Leafs legend Borje Salming can wish you a happy
birthday for $60 (or $90, if you would like it delivered within 24 hours). For
$60, you could write out a script for that pep talk you think a friend needs to
hear, and have it delivered by curling champions such as Brad Gushue or Jennifer
Jones. The more expensive messages from “Tiger King” personality Carole Baskin
or UFC announcer Bruce Buffer will set you back $600.

Armstrong, who set his fee at $23 per message, said he has been receiving
requests for everything from Christmas carols to trash talk.

“Talking smack,” he said with a laugh. “Rilin’ everybody up for their basketball
fantasy league.”

Memmo, launched a year ago in Sweden, has been described as the European
response to Cameo. Both companies keep a 25 percent cut from every video sold —
the creators get the other 75 percent — and both are trying to expand their
roster of celebrities.

It has been three years since Cameo launched in the United States with a roster
of minor celebrities.
