ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Bushman, a longtime TV curator at the Paley Center for Media, is the
author of Conversations with Mark Frost: “Twin Peaks,” “Hill Street Blues,” and
the Education of a Writer and coauthor of Twin Peaks FAQ and Buffy the Vampire
Slayer FAQ. He is an adjunct professor of communication arts at Ramapo College
of New Jersey, as well as a former TV editor at Variety and program director at
TV Land. David lives in New York City with his wife and two daughters.
Mark T. Givens works as a consultant for the federal government and is the
creator and host of the Twin Peaks–centric podcast Deer Meadow Radio
(www.deermeadowradio.libsyn.com). He lives a sometimes strange and wonderful
life with his wife and three children in Washington, DC, where he is currently
brainstorming concepts for his next book.

David Bushman is an author, publisher, and media professor who was a
longtime (27 years!) television curator at The Paley Center for Media. He
also spent two years as program director at TV Land. He is
co-president/publisher/managing editor at Fayetteville Mafia Press
(www.fayettevillemafiapress.com), specializing in true crime and pop
culture. His greatest professional achievement was interviewing Alan Moore
about the TV show "The Prisoner." He lives in NYC with his wife, two
daughters, and strangely recalcitrant dog, who is named after Agent Dale
Cooper from Twin Peaks. His next dog will almost certainly be named
Rorschach. He loves the Pogues and thinks "Fairytale of New York" is not
only the greatest Christmas song ever written, but very possibly the
greatest song ever written.

this day. The story has all the salacious ingredients for public prurience
similar to today’s Dateline television shows. And has inspired the fictional
recreation of its world at cross purposes in “Twin Peaks”.Like the Dahlia, this
cold case revolves around a young, attractive woman from a rural community
seeking a career in a thriving city through whatever means possible but ending
fatally before she is 21. And the case is over a hundred years old - Teddy
Roosevelt is President and the thriving, hustling urban world is Troy, New
York.Set forth by two enterprising media contributors, David Bushman and Mark T.
Givens, the 2022 “Murder at Teals’ Pond” is an entertaining “creative
nonfiction” version of the 1908 murder of Hazel Drew. The facts of the tale are
based on extensive documented research but, where needed, internal thoughts and
dialogues of the main players have been imagined.During July 11, 1908 just as
the Democratic National Convention nominating William Jennings Bryan to run
against William Howard Taft ended, the body of Hazel Drew, almost unrecognizable
after days in water, was discovered in a small pond not far from Troy, NY. In
the 19 days that followed the investigation exhausted the police, whipped up the
local, regional and national media, and exposed the rural – big city divide in

The immersion gives readers perspective on how confusing it must have been for

W. Floyd Collins trapped in a Sand Creek, KY mine, covered by Pulitzer-Prize

the authors’ hindsight observations at the conclusion leave a picture of dark
secrets and dreams in small communities manipulated by political ambition and

A lengthy complex highly-readable account of a long-forgotten murder. This is a
book best read by amateur sleuths as they follow along as the authors postulate
who really murdered the victim over a century ago.
There are so many players in this cast that the authors helpfully provided
details on page after page of people the reader will encounter. This was a
thoughtful addition, and one you will find yourself referring back to often.

An Amazon First Read this month, "Murder at Teal's Pond: Hazel Drew and the
Mystery That Inspired Twin Peaks" is an incredibly well researched account of
1908 murder of 20-year-old Hazel Drew, a murder that is said to have inspired
the Laura Palmer story thread in "Twin Peaks."
Fans of historical true crime stories with revel in the detail provided by David
Bushman and Mark T. Givens as they explored the world in which Drew, a domestic
worker with no obvious controversy about her at the time, actually lived and the
key players in her community and in her family. The historical depth provided
here gives tremendous weight to the effort to finally solve this mystery, though
I struggled quite often with the way the story is presented and elements of the
literary structure in "Murder at Teal's Pond." Seldom, if ever, did I feel truly
immersed in the story even as I found the actual facts fascinating.
I must confess that I'm not particularly a fan of revealing all the key players
up front, though I do understand it given how many different players are
involved here. However, front-loading facts just feels like a less literary
approach to storytelling.
Do the authors actually solve the mystery? They certainly do put forth a great
argument that will intrigue crime buffs and "Twin Peaks" fans. Is it required to
be an actual "Twin Peaks" fan to appreciate the story here? Of course not,
though the authors refer to the show multiple times and that will make multiple
parts of the book less satisfying.
Overall, this is a solid, mid-range true crime story for me that satisfies more
from a historical perspective than a literary one. I was fascinated by the
story. I simply wish it had been presented more engaging manner.

If you are a fan of fast paced, well thought out and intriguing mysteries, this
AIN'T one!!! Long, drawn out, for ever rambling and wandering would be kind. I
should have had a better clue when the first umpteen pages were just names.
To add to the ridiculous format, part way though they take a left turn into
another murder mystery. That's when I gave up.
Usually if I don't care for a book I simply eliminate the download. Seldom do I
completely delete it.
I'm am truly glad this was one of my free choices. If I'd paid for this I'd be
angry.
My description of this writing style... Beevis and Butthead try typing like
deranged monkeys with no aim except to occasionally get wasted before returning
to typing.

Where to start?
The book is really hard to get into because there is a lot of material in the
front that looks like the start of the book, but isn't.
1. A foreword or preface that is truly a piece of work (not in the good sense).
My favorite (ugh) part was the characterization of rural Albany-area locals as
inbred drunks (what is this, Hillbilly Elegy?). Another reviewer was offended by
statements that everyone involved (with what, we don't know yet) was
Republicans. (100% of my NY ancestors at the time were Republicans, and I
probably would have been too though I'm a Dem today, but, actually, point
taken.)
2. Then there's a really long list of the "Dramatis Personae," or all the
characters in the story and how they are involved. If I read this, is it full of
spoilers? If I read this, am I supposed to remember all the information before
the story even starts? Perplexing.
3. Ah, now comes the story. Oh, no. Actually it's a very disjointed sort of
afterword/acknowledgements/additional preface. The purpose of this section
seemed to be to fangirl all over the Twin Peaks show, thank people who helped
with the research, and to set the expectation that historical research in New
York State is hard. Tell me about it, dudes, but apparently harder for some than
for others. This kind of research requires some focus, which I'm not seeing in
the book so far. The part about this section that really got me was the
author(s)'s wide-eyed wonder at how many character and situational similarities
exist between a real crime and a TV show that was in part based on that crime.
Wow! It's a real coincidence!
4. Ah.... the story begins! The heading says "Chapter One"! Let's settle in and
read. Aaaaaaand... the narrative point of view changes at least once in the
first couple paragraphs and then shifts into some twee stuff about a girl
observing nature. My grandmothers were alive in the time period described, at
least one of them was an avid nature lover, and I promise she was never that
twee on her most twee day.
Now, let's be fair. Label this book as Twin Peaks fan fiction or as being for
Twin Peaks Obsessive Fans Only, and you might have something. This was not a
good Amazon First selection, because I'm thinking all you are doing is
collecting terrible reviews from True Crime fans and mystery readers who are
more of the generalist type.

This book certainly makes for an interesting read as such but is sure to prove
disappointing to many. As we are told, the story of Hazel Drew in part
influenced the creation of cult tv show ‘Twin Peaks’ as co-creator Mark Frost
was told the story of the death by his maternal grandmother when he was younger.
We are thus given the story here of twenty year old Hazel Drew who was found
dead at Teal’s Pond in Rensselaer County, New York State in 1908. A murder to
all intents and purposes this is a case that has never been solved, and despite
the main writers of this claiming to have possibly solved this over one hundred
year old crime, it does not really look like it, and so the mystery still
remains. The county seat is Troy, and even though you probably have not heard of
Hazel Drew it is likely that you have heard of the city, as over the years
events in the area have been portrayed in films and books and inspired a number
of tales. This has a lot to do with the politics in the area which have paid
such an important role and have led to cover-ups and crimes over the years.
Here then we read of Hazel Drew and what is known of the case, and although this
is in itself quite interesting there are really too many unknowns to give us a
clear understanding of the young lady. We can see that as such she never had a
well paying job, but also at the same time had a predilection for fine clothes
and so on, which obviously meant that she spent more than she could afford, but
then again there does not seem to be a string of debt surrounding her.
Conflicting reports of her personality by some along with oddities, such as her
family not immediately reporting her missing and such like only add to the
mystery. This then does give us to a certain extent a look into the lives of
various characters in the area at this period, and also at some other earlier
periods due to crimes that had been committed in this county.
On the one hand then we are reading something that has been well enough
researched, and there are photos and newspaper reports that are included here,
but on the other hand disappoints because a book has been crafted out of
something where there is really not enough information of the victim and the
crime. The police were already at a disadvantage due to the body being found of
someone that they were not even aware was missing, and the possibly half truths
that were put out by her family, but then also this being exacerbated by the
subsequent media circus that erupted as the story became well known throughout
the whole country. At times then you feel like you are reading filler, as there
are repetitions and so on, due to the scarcity of reliable facts about the
actual case.

In 1908, the body of a twenty-year-old woman was found floating in Teal’s Pond,
Sand Lake, New York State. With the neighbourhood of various mountain folk and
charcoal-makers thrown into disarray, the police inundated with potential
suspects and dubious testimony, and speculation running riot in the daily press,
the multi-doctor autopsy lacks the conclusive wallop required to definitively
point to a likely perp.
Thus, the story of Hazel Drew is relegated to the annals of history and campfire
legend until the emergence of the TV series, Twin Peaks: created by a man who
heard the story as a child and considered it a source of inspiration for his
show.
This novelised true crime investigation into the murder of Hazel Drew is
hampered by two things.
Firstly, the writers have researched the area, the key players and possible
suspects for five years, and as such, there’s far too much detail for the reader
to keep track of. There are too many characters, with too little
characterisation to make them memorable. The imagined thought processes of the
key players are laborious and speak to many hours of writing, rewriting,
tweaking and overthinking; as such, they lack plausibility.
The book starts with the Dramatis Personae, which helps as a quick reference but
is intimidating once you realise there are so many characters to be introduced.
Then, after the bulk of the story is dealt with, there’s a very brief Here’s
What We Think Happened section, and we’re straight into the Author’s Note and
Acknowledgements. Thus, the book feels overstuffed and then, quite suddenly,
flat as a pancake.
Secondly, and I don’t like myself for saying it, but there’s no getting past the
idea that this book is written by two fanboys who want to impress the creator of
their favourite show. The authors’ love of Twin Peaks is clear and runs right
the way through the story. I suspect it goes some way to explaining the
incongruous imagined thoughts of the main characters. These are fans, with an
interest in forensic investigation, but I’m not sure they’re really writers.
For a while, I held out hope:
“Who was Hazel Drew? Because almost all of the people who controlled the
narrative contemporaneously - chiefly investigators and reporters - were men,
the story was filtered through the male gaze, and Hazel - like Laura Palmer and
her antecedent, the eponymous protagonist of the 1944 Otto Preminger film noir
Laura - became a projection on a screen, absorbing whatever qualities or
shortcomings these unreliable narrators assigned to her: woman as defined by
male obsession.”

And okay, it’s a run-on sentence, but it gave me hope that these authors
wouldn’t give a pantomime facsimile of a lead female character. Unfortunately,
as Hazel is imagined, walking fearlessly through the woods at night, near the
pond where she’d be found a few days later…
“She wipes at her brow with her sleeve. Her hair has dampened and matted in the
heat. How many men had complimented her on her radiant blonde hair and
glittering blue eyes.
“The young woman chuckles to herself. ‘If they could see me now.’”

Dang it. I don’t care if it’s 1908 and Hazel is somewhere she knows. Women have
never walked in so cavalier a fashion. No woman goes anywhere alone at night,
her shoes caked in mud, with no torch, keys between her fingers or weapon of any
kind, without thinking that an attack is imminent. And I’m sorry, fellas, but
even if she does feel impossibly safe and undaunted, she doesn’t devote all her
thoughts to what various faceless men think of her.
I'm sure inadvertently, but the authors have retained the female victim as the
film noir femme, and removed any real depth from her thoughts, actions and
murder.
Exhaustive and exhausting.

This really is not very good at all.
The authors researched the murder of a young woman, Hazel Drew, who died in
1908. Investigations at the time failed to identify her killer[s]. The book
suggests it may have been carried out by powerful men who were protected. Which
would not be a surprise.
This simple tale is padded out to over three hundred pages of red herrings,
false trails and irrelevant details. There is considerable repetition delivered
in clunky prose.
Newspapers and detectives at the time spent a great deal of effort in uncovering
the victim’s “secret double life”. The authors do much the same. Which means
they think it was not exactly her fault, not exactly.
The authors’ qualifications are their obsessive interest in the television drama
of the 1990s. Twin Peaks. Apparently this was loosely based on the death of
Hazel Drew.
Bushman and Givens say they spent five years doing intensive research. They
probably share the responsibility for this, then.

I knew that this book was written on facts, that they had reseched, and not a
novel. But it's boring! It could have been a much more interesting book, if it
had a story running through it. I didn't finish the book! Only read a little bit
of it!

I thought this books was quite competently written - the authors do a good job
in bringing the period details to life and while not exactly a page turner it
did keep me reading - mainly because I was hoping there would be a shattering
revelation at the end, However after page and pages of detail about the crime
and the principle characters we get only a few pages of analysis which point to
a rather obvious conclusion - one I had already figured out for myself and some
questions - such as how did a maid like Hazel manage to live far beyond her
means? - are never answered. This story has all the ingredients for a great true
crime book but sadly this effort misses the mark.
