*Lu Ban was a carpenter and builder who lived about 2,400 years ago and
continues to be celebrated in China as the patron saint of the construction
trade. He invented intricately crafted ‘locks’ held together by a single piece
and known for their unending variety of designs. These works of engineering came
to be called “Lu Ban locks,” and have been valued as historic and cultural
artifacts for millennia. In 2014, Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang gave German
Chancellor Merkel a Lu Ban lock as a gift symbolizing their collaboration, with
the hope the two countries could ‘solve difficulties with intelligence.’ For us
