There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving
it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was
a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the
Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were
bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other, and at the Navy, with
nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles
that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight.

students. While other kids are cruising around in their cars or playing ball,
this trio, known as the Galileo Club, is experimenting with rocket fuels. Art's
uncle, the nuclear physicist Dr. Donald Cargraves, offers them the opportunity
of a lifetime: to construct and crew a rocket that will take them to the moon.
But there are those who don't share their dream and who will stop at nothing to
keep their rocket grounded.

After the fall of the American Ayatollahs as foretold in Stranger in a Strange
Land and chronicled in Revolt in 2100, the United States of America at last
fulfills the promise inherent in its first Revolution: for the first time in
human history there is a nation with Liberty and Justice for All. No one may
seize or harm the person or property of another, or invade his privacy, or force
him to do his bidding. Americans are fiercely proud of their re-won liberties
and the blood it cost them; nothing could make them forswear those truths they
hold self-evident. Nothing except the promise of immortality…

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the
good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting
along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492.
Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture,
and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other.
So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with
Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Travel to other planets is now a reality, and with overpopulation stretching the
resources of Earth, the necessity of finding habitable worlds is growing ever
more urgent. There’s a problem though—because the spaceships are slower than
light, any communication between the exploring ships and Earth would take years.

Tom and Pat are identical twin teenagers. As twins they’ve always been close, so
close that it seemed like they could read each other’s minds.

The gravitational force created by a rotation on its axis of 770 miles per
second means no need for a roof. Walls 1,000 miles high at each rim will let in

Fleet of Worlds takes a closer look at Human-Puppeteer (Citizen) relations and
the events leading up to Niven's first Ringworld novel. Kirsten Quinn-Kovacks is
among the best and brightest of her people. She gratefully serves the gentle
race that rescued her ancestors from a dying starship, gave them a world, and
nurtures them still. If only the Citizens knew where Kirsten's people came from.

They first appear as a series of dots on astronomical plates, heading from
Saturn directly toward Earth. Since the ringed planet carries no life,
scientists deduce the mysterious ship to be a visitor from another star. The
world's frantic efforts to signal the aliens go unanswered. The first contact is
hostile: the invaders blast a Soviet space station, seize the survivors, and
then destroy every dam and installation on Earth with a hail of asteriods.

The Earth died when aliens rained thermonuclear warheads on her cities and
sprayed the surface with a bio-terminator. A deadly poison drifted to every
corner of the planet, threatening the last survivors with annihilation. For a
soldier like Creed, there is only one way to keep breathing untainted air. He
must bury his hatred of the extraterrestrials and join the Jelk Corporation as
an assault trooper, leaving the planet for outer space. In return for his and
other people's services, the corporation will house the last humans for as long
as the assault troopers keep winning.

They tried to destroy our planets. Our way of life. They tried to send us into
extinction. But we, the Coalition, fought them and won. That was a decade ago.
They’re known as the Host: a cabal of aliens seeking to dominate our sector of
space. And they’re back - with help from a powerful new enemy. We’re outnumbered
and unprepared. But there is hope. An ancient race of long-dead but
technologically advanced aliens called the Navigators have a ship called the
Blackstar that could potentially turn the tide. That is if I, Kai Locke, a
humble ship racer, can find it and learn how to harness its power in time.

They're all gone. We remember them like yesterday: pieces of our stolen
heritage. Things like NASA. Football. Parades and pies. Good things, comfortable
things. We remember a time when we were alone in the universe, safe and
oblivious. But it's all gone now. We called them the Telestines, and in the face
of their ruthless invasion we were powerless. By 2040, all the world's
governments and militaries had fallen, and the remnants of humanity exiled to
the solar system. We looked down on our blue planet, so close to our birthplace,
so close to our home.

ARE YOU SURE THIS IS A WORK OF FICTION?

I know it's fiction, but I learned more about government in this series. A very
clear story, without the dry reach of most books. This has always been my
favorite series. Turn this series into a TV show and you would have a winner.

EXCELLENT SET-UP TO BOOK 8

If you could sum up Empire's End in three words, what would they be?

Let me put it this way - you might as well buy book eight now because if you've
listened to all 7 books, there is no way in Hell that you aren't listening to
Book 8. That said, book 7 is really good. It just that you (like STEN) is left
feeling a little empty. Let's just hope that Book 8 will give us all the
strength to endure.
