This is a golf book with a difference. Two lifelong friends, Alec and Bob, set
out on a round of golf to contest for their personal trophy, two worthless
banknotes encased in a plastic beermat. Due to a chance meeting in the clubhouse
that Alec had with his maths professor back when he was studying maths at
university, their chats between each shot aren't the normal update of family,
friends and events over the preceding winter. The short conversation he had with
the professor caused him to think back to his childhood and when they're out on
the course Alec recalls that it was Bob's father with a simple 'magic numbers '
trick which kindled his interest in maths when he was eight or nine years old.
This conversation leads on to further discussions between them in which they
explain to each other the history of science from its early days with Thales in
Ancient Greece up to the present and The Large Hadron Collider by way of
Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Einstein and many others.. As neither golfer is a
scientist, their chats are in our normal everyday, sometimes humorous, language
and there's no technical jargon for the reader to puzzle over.
'18 Holes of Quantum Golf, or A Duffers Guide to the Universe, is a story that
shows the true value of friendship. It's a book that encourages passion toward
one's goals in life and I love how the author used Bob and Alec, two senior
citizens competing for their personal trophy, to highlight the importance of
caring, friendship, love, marriage and, most importantly, to explain how science
has enabled us to gain a better understanding about the world around us. Also, I
loved the addition of humour in between the lines of the story which adds to the
point that the author is explaining.'

delightful read. The book will be educational for people who want an easy
introduction to the growth of science and the many impacts it has had on our

There's a sting in the tail when Bob discovers that knowledge of the quantum, or

W.J.Hendry (Bill) is an 81 year old first time author who took to writing after
the death of his wife in 2021. Bill & Christine were married for nearly
fifty-eight years and writing helped to fill in a large lonely gap in his life.
Golf was his main hobby for nearly sixty years and he served his local golf club
as Social Convenor then Captain. Unfortunately back problems and a dodgy knee
have put paid to his golfing days and he is limited to a five hole putting green
in his back garden.
His working life was spent with the national telephone service then on to
computers and he enjoyed this work 'til being offered early retirement. As an
electronics engineer he has always taken a keen interest in science, especially
physics, and regrets leaving school early rather than going on university. His
knowledge of science has come from reading a large selection of books on the
subject for the past fifty years and his main aim is to help de-mystify physics
as much as is possible.
He says that he may be getting on in years but feels that there's still a bit of
mileage left in him and is currently looking at several options for a new book.
