For someone who is taking the reins of a leadership role for the first time,
there can be a lot of uncertainty, questions and doubts. What really makes a
good leader? Are you set up to be a good leader? What is the correct management
style for you? These are topics and headlines that have been wildly debated and
pondered. The question behind these that everyone truly wants to know is: How do
I succeed as a leader?

There is no shortage of articles and books you can find on the topic of
leadership. A simple internet search will bring you an endless string of pages
for your consumption — pages that are ready to tell you who you are and what it
takes to accomplish the success for which you are searching. If you review just
the first page of results, you’ll likely notice that none of them seem to agree.
You might see "the six types of leaders," "the eight types of leaders," "the 10
types of leaders" and more. If no one can come to a consensus on simply how many
different leadership styles there are, how do you figure out where you fit?

PROMOTED

This is the easiest answer to discover. Only you can define the type of leader
you are. Only you can pave the way toward success or failure. There is nothing
wrong with doing research to get advice and find ideas or answers you might not
have thought of on your own. But as you are sorting through all the available
literature, remember that to be an effective leader, there is no checklist. You
can’t focus in on a specific description and live by how an article, a book or
even a respected mentor has bullet-pointed what it exactly means. I believe
concrete titles and definitions can bring you far more trouble than success.

Becoming a 'good leader' starts with how you treat your team.

Understanding the basic idea behind defined leadership types is good research,
but in order to be a strong and successful leader, it’s wise to be fluid and add
a little piece of them all. What defines a "good leader" can fluctuate and can
really only be established in the minds and hearts of your team, how productive
they are and the level of morale on a continuous basis. The most important thing
to remember is that your team is comprised of individual people with unique
personalities who can learn to work together driving toward a singular goal.
They are not a single entity created to serve a programmed task.

If you are going to have an impact on the entire team, you will reach them more
effectively if you approach and recognize them as individuals, not just a unit.
Everybody has a method of learning that works best for them. Identifying the
simple things you can do to reach individuals and assist them in excelling at
their tasks is an important aspect of good leadership. However, if you approach
your team with an unbending stance that each person must mold and adapt to,
there is a good chance you could see a larger turnover issue than is usual and a
decline in production.

It is, of course, not a good idea to let your team take control. No matter what
approach to the leadership role you choose, you are the manager and are there to
act as a guide. Remember that if you become too rigid and unyielding in your
approach, you could be missing out on a wealth of unrealized talent. Each
employee carries with them the potential for fresh and different ideas. There
could be amazing innovations that can take your operation to an entirely new
level.

An open mind and a willingness to learn are also staples of strong leadership.

There is one staple that will always serve you well: an open mind. Be willing to
listen and learn from your team, just as they learn from you. Every person has
strengths and weaknesses. Each individual has an opportunity to complement one
another. Where one might be weak, another is strong. Perfection is not a
plausible goal, but building an incredible team that can tackle each task with
impressive momentum is an achievable and lofty ambition.

Continue to listen, learn and grow. One mistake many people make is to become
settled in the routine of their careers as the years march forward. Working to
enhance your skills and knowledge is paramount for a long-term, high-achieving
leader.

Take these offered definitions of the different styles of leadership as a
starting point toward your success. As your personal method begins to take
shape, you might find yourself leaning closer to one style over others.
Remember, you are unique, and this is your opportunity to create your own
definition of a "good leader."
