The USDA has systematically discriminated against minority farmers for decades
by denying them low-interest rate loans, not providing access to farm
improvement programs and assistance, and allowing record-breaking land loss

The USDA ran a similar program from 2012 - 2013, and it denied 95% of the claim
form applications that it received from minority farmers, primarily because
these applications were not completed correctly. Here’s what happened:  

●  About 36,000 farmers submitted late or incomplete claim forms.

●  Roughly 22,000 farmers turned in their forms complete and on time. But 19,000
of these were denied. The USDA stated that more than half of these denied claims
seemed fraudulent.

●  Only 3,000 farmers were approved and received discrimination payments from
the USDA.

Minority Farmers Deserve Justice

The structural discrimination that’s plagued the offices of the USDA for the
last 100 years has led to deep inequities in the U.S. farming industry.

Local USDA offices process loan applications from white farmers roughly 3.5
times faster than those from Black farmers. The USDA forecloses on minority
farmers at staggeringly higher rates. And whistleblowers have advised that the
USDA has intentionally misreported crop yields from Black farmers.

Official USDA policies, institutional practices, and federal laws have
systematically dispossessed Black and Indigenous farmers of their land and
prevented future people of color and women farmers from becoming landowners.

According to two surveys conducted through the USDA National Agriculture
Statistics Service, 97% of all U.S. farm owner-operators today are white. And
the overwhelming majority of these owners are men.
