The village of Hamilton in Madison County had the highest property tax rate
among all Central New York villages in 2022, according to data from the state
comptroller’s office.

Hamilton had a tax rate of $11.99 per $1,000 of the the full taxable value of
property in the village. That was the highest rate in a six-county region of
Central New York and No. 53 in all of New York.

Two Onondaga County villages ranked just behind Hamilton. Liverpool was second
in the region and No. 54 statewide with a tax rate of $11.95 per $1,000 and
Solvay was third in the region and No. 65 statewide with a tax rate of $11.41.

You can see the top 10 village tax rates in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida,
Onondaga and Oswego counties in the table below. If you can’t see the table,
click here to open this story in a web browser.

The villages are ranked by full value tax rate, which reflects the total levy in
each village per $1,000 of the full taxable value of all property in the
village.

The metric helps measure the overall property tax burden in each community. The
number is based on full property valuations, not assessed values, so it is
generally comparable across villages, the comptroller’s office says.

The figures are from 2022, the most recent year available from the comptroller’s
office.

Villages with high tax rates aren’t necessarily spending wildly.

Three of the villages on the top 10 list for tax rates have total levies of less
than $1 million, including Clayville, McGraw and Marathon.

But the three communities have low property values, which ultimately pushes
rates higher. That’s because it takes a higher rate in low-value communities to
raise the same amount of money a smaller rate would in a location with higher
property values.

It’s the same reason places like with higher property values can have low tax
rates. The village of Skaneateles, for example, has one of the lowest tax rates
in Central New York because of the high taxable value of property there.

You can see the villages with the lowest tax rates below. Skaneateles is No. 7
with a rate of $2.99 per $1,000.

Oneida Castle had the lowest 2022 tax rate among Central New York villages at 68
cents per $1,000. Fabius was No. 2 at $1.77 and Holland Patent was No. 3 at
$2.29.

Those three village all had small levies. The levies in Oneida Castle and Fabius
were under $30,000 and the levy in Holland Patent was just under $51,000.

You can search data on tax rates for 528 villages across New York using the tool
below. The comptroller’s office didn’t have data for every village, so some
places are not included in the database.

To view the full list of all villages, leave the search box blank and select
“all counties” in the drop-down menu.
