Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary PETER MUMBA has attributed the national
power blackout experienced last night to an unexpected development on the
Zambia-Zimbabwe interconnector. During a press briefing in Lusaka today, Mr.
MUMBA said both countries suffered the black out as a result of the development.
He disclosed that on the Copperbelt, miners at a Chinese mine in Kalulushi and
Mindola Shaft in Kitwe were trapped but they were successfully rescued after
alternative power was provided from the Copperbelt Energy Corporation and Ndola
Energy. And acting ZESCO Managing Director JUSTIN LOONGO said the Southern
African Power Pool is investigating the source of the black out.

Electricity machine powers engineer’s home in Lusaka By Penlope Sikazwe A motor
vehicle Engineer in Lusaka has developed an electricity generating machine that
is powering over 50 percent of his house during load shedding. BENJAMIN TEMBO,
55, who developed the machine with his business partner BOYD KASONDWA says it is
able to produce 240 volts and its powered through the use of a car battery. Mr.
TEMBO who has since registered his invention with the Patents and Companies
Registration Agency is looking for more partners to develop similar machines on

ZRA investigates 320 VAT fraud cases By Honester Mshoka The Zambia Revenue
Authority –ZRA- is handling over 320 cases suspected for VAT refund fraud. ZRA
Manager Corporate Communications OLIVER NZALA says the cases are estimated to be
worth over K5-billion. In an interview with ZNBC News, Mr. NZALA said over 140
cases have been concluded with 11 convictions in the Economic and Financial
Crimes court. Meanwhile Mr. NZALA has revealed that ZRA has recovered over
K4.4-million from Spax Mining Limited on the Copperbelt which it had evaded in
VAT. Mr. NZALA said the recovery which includes a K100, 000 payment which ZRA
incurred in legal costs follows conviction of the company which pleaded guilty
to VAT fraud. He said this is contrary to section 43 of the Value Added Tax Act
Chapter 331 of the laws of Zambia. Mr. NZALA added that upon the convict's own
admission of guilt, the Economic and Financial Crimes Court convicted and
sentenced Spax Mining Limited to pay a fine of over K13,000 or in default serve
six months simple imprisonment.

Motorbike accidents on the rise in Eastern Province By Christopher Miti Eastern
