TRIP.COM GROUP CELEBRATES LUNAR NEW YEAR TRAVEL BOOM WITH 10-FOLD JUMP IN
BOOKINGS AS VISA POLICIES EASE

Feb 4, 2024Trip.com Group

Trip.com Group is leading the travel surge this Lunar New Year with significant
growth in international and inbound travel. International travel has risen by 10
times, fuelled by more relaxed visa policies, particularly to Asian
destinations. Inbound travel to China, which is experiencing one of its busiest
travel seasons of the year, has also increased tenfold compared to the previous
year, with a growing number of global tourists joining in the celebrations
across China. The festive month there is set to witness a record nine billion
inter-regional movements, with 8 February – the eve of Reunion Day – the busiest
travel day of the season. More families travelling to Asia in international
travel spike International travel rose by more than 10 times compared to the
same period last year, accompanied by an increase in expenditure, particularly
on flights. Travellers are favouring short-haul routes, with Southeast Asia,
Japan, and South Korea emerging as their preferred choices. On the whole,
popular destinations include Thailand, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Singapore,
South Korea, New Zealand, and Vietnam. The international travel trend is gaining
momentum, fuelled by increasingly relaxed visa requirements, especially in the
Asia-Pacific region. Since July last year, China has announced visa-free
arrangements for more than 10 countries. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia and
Singapore have seen a spike in search volume following the announcement of
mutual visa exemptions. For instance, searches for Singapore tourism products
increased more than 30% month-on-month shortly after the visa-free announcement
between Singapore and China. Similarly, Thailand saw searches for flights and
hotels rise by more than six times following the signing of the mutual visa
exemption agreement on 28 January. Amid the global travel surge, travel to the
Middle East is also on the rise, with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)
emerging as focal points due to favourable visa policies and convenient arrival
procedures. Dubai and Qatar are among popular destinations, with the United Arab
Emirates recording one of the highest volumes of guided tours. Furthermore,
family-centric travel has taken centre stage during the Spring Festival,
constituting 47% of all travellers this year – a 5% increase from the previous
year. This shift underscores the growing significance of family-focused journeys
during the holiday season. Families are making the most of their holidays by
embracing various travel preferences by renting cars for flexibility, opting for
customised tours to cater to their unique needs, and hiring local guides to
curate personalised and memorable experiences. Spring Festival attractions in
Asia are theme parks, while Europe's charm lies in museums and city landmarks
The top Spring Festival attractions differ between Asia and Europe, with theme
parks taking the spotlight in Asia. Meanwhile, Europe beckons travellers with
its rich cultural heritage and history, predominantly showcasing museums,
historical landmarks, and city sites. For tourists exploring Asia, iconic names
like Universal Studios Singapore, Warner Bros Harry Potter Tokyo, Tokyo
DisneySea, and South Korea's Everland are the star attractions. These
attractions are particularly popular among tourists from Malaysia, Thailand,
China, South Korea, and Japan. In contrast, European destinations favoured by
Asian tourists are museums and enchanting cityscapes, where landmarks like the
Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, Palace of Versailles, and Musee d'Orsay are
preferred. Cruise tourism too, emerged as a major draw during the Spring
Festival, with sold-out schedules for cruise ships sailing from Shanghai, and
strong demand in Hong Kong and Singapore. The popular Italian cruise line Costa
Serena and RWS' Genting Dream, which depart from Hong Kong and Singapore
respectively, are nearly at full capacity with limited availability remaining.
Moreover, this year, the average window for bookings are 35 days earlier than in
2019, indicating a substantial increase in early cruise reservations and growing
demand. Massive influx of global travellers in China for Lunar New Year
celebrations The Spring Festival continues to attract an increasing number of
travellers to China, with inbound travel bookings surging more than 10 times.
Visitors come mainly from Japan, the United States, South Korea, Malaysia,
Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Vietnam, Germany, and Thailand,
reflecting a growing international interest in celebrating the Lunar New Year
there. Travellers are showing an increased preference for staying at 4-star
hotels compared to the previous year, whereas demand for 5-star accommodations
has remained similar to last year. They are also extending their stay in China,
with an average duration of just over two days during this year's Spring
Festival, compared to under two days in the previous year. The booking window
for travel to China has expanded significantly, from six days in 2023 to 39 days
in 2024, possibly indicating an increased awareness of travel opportunities.
Record travel season in China driven by road trip trend There will be
approximately 9 billion inter-regional movements in China, setting a new
historical record and nearly tripling the numbers from the 2019 season.
Travellers are embarking on journeys that span the spectrum of snowy northern
regions to relaxing southern hot springs, leading to an increase of seven times
in domestic travel bookings. This regional travel experience, which has evolved
into a trend dubbed the "North-South Exchange", continues to attract travellers
seeking unique and immersive journeys. Furthermore, there is a growing trend of
embarking on road trips for such journeys, up by approximately 60% compared to
the same period last year. This trend is not limited to just bookings; car
rental periods have also extended, with orders for 5–8-day rentals increasing by
more than 20%, and 3–5-day rental orders increasing by 10% in the same period.
Anticipating strong growth in experience-based tourism, various destinations
such as Hangzhou and Kunming are offering half-priced or free admission to
scenic spots. A plethora of activities such as ice skating, skiing, hot springs,
culinary experiences, lantern exhibitions, temple fairs, and cultural events
have been organised to attract tourists. Trip.com Group is excited to be part of
these dynamic trends and welcomes a vibrant Lunar New Year Spring Festival.

TRIP.COM GROUP AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM 2024: REVEALING ASIA’S BIGGEST UNTAPPED
OPPORTUNITIES IN TOURISM

Jan 19, 2024Trip.com Group

Leading global travel service provider Trip.com Group is embracing new trends
and opportunities in the post-pandemic travel landscape, with its CEO Jane Sun
sharing insights at the prominent World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting held
in Davos, Switzerland, this week. Ms Sun also expressed optimism about Asia’s
continued growth and shared her perspective on its investment potential at the
panel discussion titled “Asia – the world’s next growth anchor?” From left to
right. Moderator Mr Ben Hung, CEO, Asia, at Standard Chartered Bank;Mr Roy Gori,
President and CEO of Manulife; Ms Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com Group and Mr Geoff
Lee, Executive Director, Head of Private Markets and Head of Technology at
Khazanah Nasional. As major leaders from government, business, and civil society
gathered to discuss the fundamental principles of driving trust in a world of
fractures and uncertainties, the panel convened influential stakeholders to
delve into the exciting opportunities and new challenges emerging in Asia.
Speaking alongside Ms Sun were Mr Roy Gori, President and CEO of Canada’s
largest insurance company Manulife, and Mr Geoff Lee, Executive Director, Head
of Private Markets and Head of Technology at Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund
Khazanah Nasional. Mr Ben Hung, CEO, Asia, at Standard Chartered Bank, moderated
the panel. With global tourism approaching a full recovery, Trip.com Group has
witnessed strong booking interest in Asia, with Thailand, Japan, and South Korea
among the top travel destinations. The rise in consumer income has also led to
growing trends in the region such as high-quality wellness experiences and event
tourism, particularly for sought-after events like concerts and music festivals.
Sustainable tourism is another shift that is picking up steam, with
environmental awareness motivating more than 16 million Trip.com Group customers
to choose low-carbon travel options, such as hotels that adhere to sustainable
standards. The Group has also prioritised options such as the rental of
electronic vehicles and offering flights with lower carbon emissions. Zooming in
on the post-pandemic economic trajectory in one of Asia’s largest regions, Ms
Sun asserted that China offers more investment opportunities than what some may
have perceived. “Investors should not overlook the thriving travel, wellness or
entertainment sector in China. With its vast size, diverse industries, and
varying levels of consumer buying power, the investment opportunities are
abundant,” said Ms Sun. In particular, the travel sector presents numerous
untapped growth opportunities, such as the rapid increase in inbound and
outbound travel, as well as favourable policy developments. Ms Sun expressed
optimism about the growth of the tourism industry, especially with recent
positive developments, such as increased flight capacities and expanded
visa-free arrangements, that have facilitated international travel to and from
China. These include the recent unilateral visa-free policies for several
countries, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands, mutual
visa-free agreements with Malaysia, and plans for similar arrangements with
Singapore and Thailand. China also announced earlier in the week that it will
unilaterally grant visa-free entry to Swiss and Irish nationals. Since July
2023, China has removed visa requirements for citizens of 11 nations. According
to Trip.com Group data, significant increases have been recorded in inbound
search and booking volumes from countries such as Germany, Spain, and the
Netherlands. Those with visa-free arrangements or plans for relaxed visa
policies, such as Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, are among the top
destinations favoured by Chinese tourists for the upcoming Chinese New Year.
Moreover, since its launch in September 2023, Trip.com’s “China Travel Guide”,
which provides information about hotel, transport, payment, and other
travel-related issues, has served nearly 100,000 international travellers
planning to visit China. Meanwhile, as of mid-January, outbound travel orders
for the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays have surged more than 10 times
compared to the previous year. For the wider Asian economy, Ms Sun maintained
that its prospects remain robust, citing projections that it will contribute to
around 50% of global GDP growth. The rapid development of the tourism industry
in Asia, coupled with the strong purchasing power of Asian customers, has
indicated the potential for sustained growth in the region. “We are committed to
forging an influential network for our global partners, empowering them to
welcome customers from every corner of the world,” said Ms Sun. “Equally, we
stand poised to usher Asian customers into the global arena, opening doors to
boundless opportunities and creating pathways for unprecedented international
success.”

TRIP.COM GROUP CEO TACKLES OVERTOURISM FOR SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL AT WORLD ECONOMIC
FORUM

Jan 19, 2024Trip.com Group

Trip.com Group, a leading global travel service provider, has set its sights on
tackling key challenges surrounding the tourism industry. This is evidenced by
CEO Ms Jane Sun's participation in the panel discussion "Sorry, We're Full:
Tackling Overtourism" at the prestigious World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland. The forum invited influential dignitaries, from political elites to
business leaders, to tackle the challenges facing our world, in the hope of
finding common ground and united solutions, aligning with this year's theme of
"Rebuilding Trust". Davos comes as the world looks forward to forging a new
normal for sustainable travel in the post-pandemic era. Over 75% of respondents
in Trip.com Group’s sustainability report agreed that sustainable travel is
vital. However, the industry faces obstacles to sustainable travel, particularly
as the rise in visitor numbers approaches pre-pandemic levels. Consequently,
destinations contend with multiple challenges, such as preserving heritage
sites, combating pollution, and looking after their ecosystems. Trip.com Group
CEO Ms Jane Sun speaks on overtourism at the World Economic Forum, Davos,
Switzerland. Source: World Economic Forum At the forum, Ms Sun shared her views
on the challenges of overtourism for multiple stakeholders across the industry.
Ms Sun spoke alongside a distinguished panel of guests, including Ms Sithembile
Ntombela, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Brand South Africa; Mr Stephen
Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers' Federation
(ITF); and Mr Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Capital A Berhad
(AirAsia). The forum was moderated by CNN International’s anchor and
correspondent Richard Quest. From left to right: Mr Richard Quest, CNN
International’s anchor and correspondent; Ms Jane Sun, CEO of Trip.com Group; Ms
Sithembile Ntombela, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Brand South Africa; Mr
Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Capital A Berhad (AirAsia); and Mr
Stephen Cotton, General Secretary of the International Transport Workers’
Federation (ITF). Source: World Economic Forum Ms Sun also met with government
officials from various countries to build upon the success of the region's
travel growth momentum. Tackling overtourism can only work if sustainability is
embedded across the travel and tourism industry. Trip.com Group addresses this
challenge through a multifaceted approach, with initiatives to promote
sustainable travel practices, improve infrastructure, and combat the
environmental and social implications. "We need to approach the issue of
overtourism with a balanced view. Destinations can become overcrowded without
proper management, and the overall experience suffers. It's imperative to find
ways for supply and demand to grow sustainably," said Ms Sun. Investing in
high-quality tourism is a viable approach to attract visitors to less
well-travelled destinations. Several key markets, such as Thailand and Malaysia,
have endorsed the idea of attracting "high-value" tourists to redirect demand
away from hotspots. Simultaneously, other regions aim to diversify tourist
influx by offering niche forms of tourism unique to under-visited regions. This
mitigates overtourism and holds the potential for economic gains, with
destinations such as Dubai successfully expanding their wellness tourism
industry to an estimated value exceeding USD 108 billion. To alleviate pressure
on popular destinations, another strategy involves the promotion of lesser-known
destinations, known as long-tail tourism. Advancements in technology and social
networking have made marketing approaches that focus on lesser-known locales
more effective. For instance, Trip.com Group employs content marketing
strategies, including e-commerce campaigns and leveraging its social travel
platform, Trip Moments, to showcase less visited areas. Daegu – a lesser-known
destination in Korea – was highlighted in a successful digital campaign which
garnered over 29 million views, resulting in an 87% increase in product sales
compared to the same period in the previous year. Beyond promoting lesser-known
destinations, targeting lull periods or traditionally low travel seasons can
help to address overtourism during peak travel periods. To make this possible,
Trip.com Group provides advanced and flexible booking options to ensure
customers have the freedom to adapt their travel plans whenever necessary. The
Group is also keen to collaborate with partners and industry stakeholders to
find sustainable solutions over the long run. “The complex challenges of
overtourism demand more than quick fixes – it will not be resolved overnight.
However, through unwavering dedication from multiple stakeholders, we believe
that every effort contributes to shaping a future where travel harmonises
seamlessly with sustainable principles. This goes beyond a goal; it’s a powerful
commitment to redefine the very essence of responsible travel,” stated Ms Sun.

EMBARKING ON 2024: TRIP.COM GROUP REVEALS TOP TRAVEL TRENDS, AI REVOLUTION, AND
SUSTAINABLE JOURNEYS

Dec 27, 2023Trip.com Group

As the sun sets on 2023, Trip.com Group, a global leader in online travel
services, reflects on the dynamic landscape of travel over the past year,
offering insights into the trends set to shape the journey in 2024. China's
border reopening sparks global travel surge With the opening of China’s borders,
travel was greatly boosted by a wave of Chinese travellers with a pent-up demand
for overseas travel. Trip.com data unveils a significant rise in outbound travel
bookings, showcasing a six-fold increase compared to 2022. This trend is
especially prominent during holiday periods, such as the 8-day Golden Week in
October which witnessed an eightfold surge in outbound travel. This is a
compelling prelude to a robust New Year Holiday season from 31 Dec 2023 to 3 Jan
2024, which recorded a 240% increase in bookings year-on-year from 2022. The
data also revealed that Chinese travellers have a strong interest in visiting
Southeast Asia, with many of these countries topping the list of preferred
outbound destinations in 2023: Top 5 destinations for Chinese travellers in 2023
1. Thailand 2. Japan 3. South Korea 4. Singapore 5. Malaysia The thriving
interest in outbound travel is expected to persist in 2024. Besides outbound
travel, China’s inbound travel is also showing steady signs of recovery. In
2023, Trip.com saw four-digit growth in visitor numbers as compared with the
same period in 2022 – surpassing 60% of pre-pandemic levels. According to
Trip.com data, China's top source markets for inbound tourism include South
Korea, Japan, Singapore, the United States, Australia, Malaysia, Canada,
Thailand, the United Kingdom and Germany. These visitors' preferred destinations
in China are Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Beijing, Zhuhai, Hangzhou, Foshan,
Xiamen, Zhongshan, and Chengdu. In fact, seven out of ten hotel bookings made by
overseas tourists are for Shenzhen. Furthermore, Trip.com's "China Travel
Guide", a comprehensive guide that provides inbound visitors to China with
hotel, transport, payment and other travel-related information, has served
nearly 100,000 overseas visitors since its launch in September. We also
partnered with e-payment service providers such as Alipay to simplify payment
for overseas visitors, helping international tourists navigate their travels in
China. AI takes centre stage in predictive planning for 2024 As we venture in
2024, the travel landscape is undergoing a paradigm shift, driven by the
widespread integration of AI. Leading this transformative change is TripGenie,
an advanced AI travel assistant that is integrated into the Trip.com mobile app.
Leveraging cutting-edge large language model technologies, TripGenie, launched
in 2023, has evolved into a personalised travel companion. It is reshaping the
way we plan our journeys, from crafting bespoke itineraries, enabling instant
bookings and delivering lightning-fast responses to user queries. For example,
if you enquire “How do I plan a 5-day trip to Bangkok?” The travel assistant
swiftly creates a personalised editable inquiry in under a minute, recommending
tourist spots, shopping destinations and even provides booking links, images and
city maps. In the latter part of 2023, TripGenie’s user searches unveiled a
rising interest in content related to "travel guide”, reflecting a growing
demand for comprehensive travel-related information. Other popular searches were
related to “flight”, “hotel”, “itineraries” and “attractions”. Expanding beyond
TripGenie, Trip.com introduced AI-powered curated lists to enhance the booking
experience for users. “Trip.Best” that recommends the best travel options,
“Trip.Deals” that shows top flights, accommodations, and other travel deals, and
“Trip.Trends” which features the most popular travel topics and events based on
user searches. These dynamic compilations are finely tuned to user preferences
derived from real-time data, providing a sneak peek into the future of travel
planning in 2024. For instance, in the “Trip.Deals” list, global users have
shown particular interest in the following top 5 destinations: 1. London 2.
Bangkok 3. Amsterdam 4. Paris 5. Hong Kong Music festivals and theme parks lead
the way for 2024’s global attractions As we set our sights on 2024, the world of
travel is embracing the fun trend of event tourism, with festivals and iconic
theme parks emerging as the cornerstones of trips. Theme parks specifically are
poised for a stellar rise, having witnessed an impressive 65% increase in
bookings in 2023 compared to 2019 levels. According to Trip.com data, these are
the top 10 theme parks in 2023 globally: 1. Hong Kong Disneyland 2. Universal
Studios Japan 3. Ocean Park Hongkong 4. Universal Studios Singapore 5. Tokyo
Disneyland 6. Tokyo DisneySea 7. Everland, Korea 8. Universal Studios Hollywood
9. LEGOLAND, Malaysia 10. Adventure Cove Waterpark Theme parks also made five of
the top ten most popular attractions globally in 2023, with Singapore Zoo,
Gardens by the Bay, The Peak, S.E.A Aquarium, and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan also
making the top 10 list. The arena of live entertainment, concerts and music

the preference for low-carbon products across Trip.com Group. In the past year,
more than 16 million Trip.com Group customers opted for low-carbon travel

protection by launching its low-carbon hotel standard initiative in 2023, an
industry framework that works with hotel partners to improve accommodation
sustainability and environmental protection. The initiative has been showing
promising results, with over 1,500 partners being shortlisted as low-carbon
hotels. Besides environmentally-friendly measures, Trip.com Group also adopts a
holistic approach to promoting sustainable development of the travel industry.
“The ESG strategies of Trip.com Group are developed on the premise of ensuring
the quality of customer service, aiming at promoting the sustainable development
of our industry via environmentally-friendly, family-friendly,
community-friendly and stakeholder-friendly guidelines,” said James Liang,
Co-founder and Chairman of Trip.com Group. To support and drive growth in its
communities, Trip.com Group continues to invest in its rural revitalisation
strategy, which aims at supporting tourism through building high-end

and development. Its Trip.com Group Country Retreats have increased from 8 to

than 60% of all staff, far exceeding the average of 43% established by the

increase female engagement, benefit families, and support the travel industry's
recovery. In addition, transparency in corporate governance is a key driver in
the successful implementation of Trip.com Group’s ESG strategy. The proportion
of independent directors in Trip.com Group has increased from 55.5% to 62.5%. At
