I’ve been searching for 4+ months after being laid off and it’s been nothing but rejections. I have some middle round interviews this week but I’m not super excited about the companies so far and I’ve gotten all the way to the end only to be rejected 3+ times. So with my luck? Probably going to end in rejection It feels like I’m just no one’s top choice, a failure compared to others who won out over me 61 Like 41 Comments Share Log in to comment 1. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER 1 4w Sometimes companies have someone earmarked for a position and go through the posting/interview process for appearances. I know it's hard but try to keep your outlook positive. Have you looked at companies' websites that may post on sites related to their business, such as the AMA. Also check local municipalities, colleges and universities, and non-profits in your area; they may not be posting/advertising on typical job search sites. Here's an example from AMA, https://jobs.ama.org/?_gl=1*1y4mqvj*_gcl_au*NDgzMTA0NDUuMTY5OTQ1NzQ5Mg..*_ga*NDM4MzkxNTI5LjE2OTk0NTc0OTI.*_ga_VZ6FMZZPER*MTY5OTQ1NzQ5Mi4xLjEuMTY5OTQ1NzQ5NS41Ny4wLjA. ADAM SHEARER 4w I know its probably not exactly what you or someone in your position wants to hear. But do remember that each rejection, each bump in the road brings us that much closer to where we need to be. It only takes 1 person to say yes! Don't give up hope. Keep putting yourself out there and the right position will find you! Like Reply Share 21 SYSTEMS ENGINEER 1 4w Second this--it only takes one yes! It can help to also spend time on training, volunteering, or other projects to keep up your skills & confidence. I am also in month 5 of looking. This is my 2nd job search since graduating & I think this is typical! Like Share 5 3. DATA ANALYST 1 4w Hint: look for someone on LinkedIn working at a company you like to refer you. To make it easy for the person , check if the job is available first then tell the person to refer you, they get bonus when they refer to the company they work at so it is a win win. Note: don’t apply for the job. Underneath your name on your resume include the job title and send to the person you find on LinkedIn. Referral works faster than you think. Like Reply Share 10 4. PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT 1 4w I get it. It’s basically ageism. Especially if they can hire someone young with les experience. I’m having same problem. Seems like a witch hunt out there!!!!! Like Reply Share 9 View 1 more reply PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT 1 4w Same here!!!!! I sit for clients. And dong let anyone know I’m a therapist. Wow!!!! The fraud. And incompetent young therapist hired have no idea. But honestly. We are not going to have a free world anymore. As communism is taking over. So enjoy life while you can. Like Share 2 5. ALIGHT 1 4w Hi! I've been looking for 2 months and have been laid off for 1. I've been getting interviews pretty consistently - I find that updating my resume and really working hard on it helped a lot. Also applying to as many jobs as I could. Feel free to message and maybe we can exchange pointers Like Reply Share 5 6. ACCOUNT EXECUTIVE 1 4w Take a look at how you can adjust. Can you apply different? Get a referral from someone? Does your resume need a fresh pair of eyes on it? Every time this get rejection can you get feedback on how to better position yourself for the next one? Keep your head up, adjust and keep it moving. You’ll get there. Like Reply Share 6 PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT 1 4w No. It’s not that easy Like Share 1 7. PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR 1 4w I can say I feel like you have I've been out of work for the last 3 months I've gotten plenty of interview to the second round and I've got nothing but rejections I even got interviews from recruiters but I still have got nothing but rejections I did my due diligence on trying to get information for the companies and who I was interviewing with but still I've gotten rejections at this point I feel like it's my age as well on a couple months I'll be hitting 58.....😔 Like Reply Share 9 8. PRODUCT DESIGN MANAGER 1 4w Look at it this way. The whole thing is a giant funnel. Hundreds of people apply to many positions. Maybe 10 get phone screenings from HR. Maybe 3-5 are selected for formal interviews and generally one is offered the job. So, it you make it to the final round, you have between a 1 in 3 or 1 in 5 chance of being offered the job. Sounds like you are doing fine. Last time I was laid off, I applied to 100 jobs, got maybe 5 phone screenings, 3 formal interviews and one job offer. Work your contacts. You need to jump past that first brutal screening when it goes from hundreds to ten. Like Reply Share 7 9. HII 1 4w Keep your head up. A change is coming 🙌 Like Reply Share 7 10. CASE ANALYST 1 4w I've been feeling down from all the rejections. I saw a story about a year old Cane Corso puppy who had gone through horrible situations. I spent all last week trying to find a rescue to pull her from the kennel she was in. Trying to help her reignited the spark. Unfortunately, she had injuries that were worse than we thought. She passed away yesterday. But I want to continue to help animals. So, I am trying to find a position that would allow me to work with animals. Find a cause that ignites your spark. It might lead to opportunities you didn't know existed. Like Reply Share 7 11. HRBP 1 4w Don’t lose hope. Keep pressing forward. I’ve also been job hunting for a few months now and just like you, I’ve been on several interviews. Made it to the first, second and sometimes final round of interviews only to receive a rejection. Although I felt as if I’ve come close but I haven’t received any offers yet. I know some people that has been unemployed and looking for a job for over 9 months and some even over a year. They have deep skills, really experienced and worked at top corps. but they’re also getting rejections. Keep in mind it’s extremely competitive right now. Also keep in mind that the tables have turned and employers have the upper hand at the moment. A job that may have had 20 applicants back then is now looking at hundreds of applicants. It’s not you. It’s the nonsense job market. Like Reply Share 9 PRODUCTION SUPERVISOR 1 4w Thank you for the encouragement I'm trying to stay hopeful but sometimes it's hard but I really appreciate your comments it was very pleasing and very nice to hear in a time like this again thank you very much and good luck to you as well 🙏🏼 Like Share 3 12. CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE 1 4w If you're getting to the interview round, it's prob not your resume. Here's some tips I hope might help: -businesses aren't necessarily looking for the most qualified candidate. They're looking for "the safest" hire that will augment the existing team. Sometimes the most qualified candidate on paper isn't a hire with a high chance of success to stick after the time and expense of on boarding, or throws yellow flags when it comes to collaboration and they won't be extended an offer. So I hope that can help you feel more confident going in to interviews! -apply for jobs where you meet between 75-90% of requirements. If you meet 100%, there's no room for you to grow with the position and you likely won't stay long term, see above; this makes you a sub optimal hiring investment. -research ways you can use chat gpt to help you with interview prep. You can pull the job description and have the ai predict the most important qualifications, extrapolate likely interview questions, then you can form you answers to those questions, feed your responses back into chat gpt for suggestions to improve. This should help you be more prepared for the interview and convey more confidence. Like Reply Share 9 13. CONSULTANT 1 4w Maybe you lack some key personality traits like confidence, resilience and motivation. They can pretty well determine this through interviewing. Would you hire someone who loses hope so easily? Someone who holds so much self doubt? You should be self-assured of your strengths and your ability to master the task at hand. Now go get that job! Like Reply Share 4 View 3 more replies BRAND MARKETING STRATEGIST 1 4w I don’t think OP is saying interviews are pointless but rather there’s been a track record of losing out on the role. So people try their best but realistically the odds are not great right now. People are allowed to be dishearten and be at a low point now where they need affirmations. Its part of the job processes, these lows and building yourself up with compassion and acknowledgment that moments of self doubt will come Like Share 3 14. LIBRARY AIDE 1 4w Don’t feel this way! What helps me sometimes is getting pissed off in the back of my mind: “I want this F’ing job, F these people!” Also, I use reverse psychology where I tell myself I’m not going to get this job anyway, so it doesn’t matter what I say - which relieves pressure and perform more relaxed on interviews. Also, explore other fields of interest, like less saturated ones. Good luck and think positive!! 😉👍 Like Reply Share 7 15. SYSTEMS ANALYST 1 4w Hang in there. I'm in the same boat as you, for longer, and dang it's been tough. 🤞 Like Reply Share 5 16. DESIGNER 1 4w Watch YouTube interview videos, it’s helped me a lot. It’s helped me pick up a lot of small things I could improve. Don’t get hard on yourself many people have been looking for over a year. Meanwhile try to spend your time constantly improving your resume, creating a LinkedIn profile, get a professional headshot, network, go to networking events. Freelance, market yourself. There’s so many ways to generate income even if it’s a small amount but look at it as a way of putting yourself out there. It’s hard at first, it gets easier. It took me over a decade to finally put myself out there. I got passed over on a career opportunity I felt was MADE for me. It hurt a lot. It was a dream position for me. I picked myself up and put myself out there, went to networking events, seminars in my trade, etc… I had opportunities I didn’t take because of relocating. I even applied at entry level positions just to get a response and I did, I got rejected 😂. The economy is in a downward spiral, you’re not alone. All you can do is keep trying to improve yourself, watch videos, market yourself, make business cards offer consulting services freelance (you can network great and sort of show people what you’re capable of), get on every job posting website and email alerts (Glassdoor, indeed, LinkedIn, monster, etc…) keep in mind many companies aren’t doing as well financially and might be holding off on adding more overhead. Keep your head up. Even try some self care like meditation, therapy, yoga… put yourself in a happy place because positivity attracts positivity. I was REALLY down at one point. I still have no real prospects, but I changed my outlook. Either way I’m working. Listen to motivational speakers (Les Brown is my favorite). Hope this helps. Like Reply Share 2 17. BRAND MARKETING COORDINATOR 1 4w Internal Referal! My advice is message people you know irl or on LinkedIn. People like to help people, and jobs like to hire people they already know. I hope this helps someone ❤️ Like Reply Share 2 18. SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER 1 4w Hi there! As someone who was laid off in May and has received countless rejections, all I can say is hang in there. I was able to land only 4 interviews and two of those ended in a rejection and the role being cancelled. I only just got an offer a few hours ago from one of the remaining two, and might be starting in December. The past couple of months have definitely been demoralizing but there is a light at the end of that tunnel. I tailored my resume to each JD and where I was able to, I found out who the recruiting manager was and emailed them directly on LinkedIn letting them know I applied and why I was perfect for the role. This approach landed me two of the four interviews. Best of luck! Like Reply Share 4 Author MARKETING MANAGER 4w Thank you for sharing!! This gives me good inspiration and hope. Congrats!!!! I was laid off in July after 10 years with a company and have applied to about 80+ roles and got 2 interviews only to not make it past that first round. Also, I know I am rusty with interviewing so I have been practicing, thanks to the poster who recommended YouTube for interview prep! I've been taking classes and registered with my state job placement for free resources and coaching. I have 9 weeks left of unemployment and then S#*% is going to get real. Good Luck! Like Reply Share 5 View 1 more reply WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY 1 4w O Omg! You kept it raw with your reply. Whew. Trust and believe that I understand. I graduated last May with an MS in Human Resource Management and Development from NYU. The job search has been hell. One hiring manager expressed concern that the pay range would not keep me with the organization. Another organization had me go through three rounds only to be insulted by the VP of HR who clearly was dismissive of my education. They ghosted me. On the flipside, I look at rejections as blessings that God kept me from being in bad work environments.
